E.R. Rotix, Esq.,38 Station Road,

CAMBRITXJE.

Dear Roux,

I have Had several le t te r s from you out have been too busy

to reply to them hitherto. I personally have been preoccupied,

besides other things, w ith the f inan c ia l battle , which is raging

extremely severely at present, and In wnich fuwdfui- party mem

bers can a s s is t . In spite o f a l l e f fo r t s . It remains Impossible

to ra ise funds to pay out Rostron, and as that is s t i l l as

necessary a step as ever, a sale may occur any moment, meaning a

fresh start fo r the paper - - possib ly an interregnum may be

involved.

I expect you have got your papers by now, So I need not '

cover the ground they cover. Behind the scenes the l.C .U .

Secretary, who when a l l is said is vain and anxious fo r lime-

l ign t, thc-ugn not yet a bad lo t, is coming under the influence

of reactionaries, including Champion who is now host ile , and

quite a coolness now p reva ils between us. But i t would be

quite a topsy turvy event i f the mass he represents should be

jockeyed into going to Amsterdam. I thin* the f igh t should

not be unduly M e n M fle d Into a sp l i t , out our views must b .

icade tp p reva i l on every occasion o f division, and the rank and

f i l e accustomed to act^a team and take the lead.

Can you get a tslltf with Cook before he sa ils? We have

written nim at length, t e l l in g him a mere repetit ion of the

Mann tour does not lead fa r enough, he must take a conspectus

of the whole c lass nere, but an interview would be more i l

luminating.

Some o f our iriends are almost certa in ly going to Brussels

next month fo r a Congress you w i l l have seen mentioned in the

papers. There is a regu lar scramble for free trips, and among

others i t id expected that Glass w in go fo r the S.A.T.U.C.

You should make a point of explaining his history, etc ., to the

proper quarters.

Hertzog is being lion ised : he has secured the long wished

fo r r ight fo r S. A fr ic a to wallop ner own niggers without over

sea interference. Attempts to get white laboui to oppose his

B i l l s have fa i led so far, but there is s t i l l a chance.

We are having a Conference here at Christmas at whicii 'So lly*

w i l l no doubt have the most to say — I wish he could learn to

say i t in a less aggressive manner: perhaps ne w i i l someday.

Jimmy has been try ing to revive the C .f . Branch, I fear with

not much immediate success. xhe fact id that that old type of

Branch does not correspond with the centre/ of gravity of the

movement now, and has fa i le d to a ttract tiie I .C .U . elements.

No time fo r more now.
