Pneuma Overview • Professional Network for the Emancipation of the
Under-Privileged Masses : PNEUMA • Founded in 2003 • Home for children outside of school hours

Site Visit • Conducted by volunteer at ASHA Chennai on March 28 • Observations:
– Children enjoy the facility’s atmosphere – On-site: Director, Cook, Helper, Warden, Security Guard – Food provided was nutritious (ate dinner on site) – Children are provided computer training by volunteers – Need better library facilities- newspaper/magazine subs. – Recommends provision of encyclopedias and dictionaries – Plans still underway to move to bigger facility but no
concrete details provided – Felt a strong sense of community

Conclusion • Pneuma continues to provide an excellent shelter for
children before and after school hours – Site visit reports over the past two years have been
positive and encouraging
• However, Pneuma’s ask for 2014 exceeds ASHA SF’s sustainable funding ability
• Continue to support Pneuma but at a level lower than the current ask- Fund Rs. 3.4 (or 3.15) lakh. – Consequences:
• No autorickshaw • No game materials • No water plant • Staff salaries still increase

Pneuma trust was established by professional social Workers.It was formed to provide education to the
underpreviledged children.
4. Briefly describe the aims of your group.
• To educate the children
• To create awareness about health and hygiene to the adolescent children
• To provide to the elders and street wanderers.
• To empower women.

* Summer Camp for the Rural Poor Children
* Sexual and reproductive education for the School and College Students.
* Yoga and Naturopathy Programme
* Care and Support programme for the PLHA
* Community based care for the sibling of the HOME FOR CHILDREN
* Home for children is a Home for the HIV affected boy children were there are 35 children are housed here
they are given food ,clothing, shelter and sent to regular school for education.
* Counselling center which provides counselling to the diffirently abled children and their
family,students,female sex workers.

The children are taught in school.Where the teaching technique is designed by the Government of Tamil
Nadu called Samacheer Kalvi.
11. What is the literacy rate in the local community?
In Madurai District the Literacy rate is 83.45% ,Male Literacy rate-89.72% and Female :Literacy rate is
77.16%
12. Describe the socio-economic background of the children and their parents (e.g. education, occupational).
If any of your students are employed, please tell us about that as well.
The children are from different family back ground,they are as follows
• Children affected by HIV/AIDS.
• Orphan and semi orphan children with economically poor back ground
• Childrern of life convict(prisioners).
• Children of Mentally ill parent/parents.
• Children from socially weaker section.
The Parents/Parent of the children are living Below poverty line and they are daily coolie.

33 children have gone through the program.Children are doing their higher education and few of them are
employed.
19. Do you help your students with their future education efforts after they have passed out of your school?
Yes ,If the child is really interested in continuing the education.Pneuma helps them with the help of the local
sponcers.

Since the programme is the residential home for the children.The children stay in Pneuma Home and attend
the regular school.In the evening after the return from school the children are given coaching in their
academic curriculum.

The children attend government school for education.
23. Do you try to involve the parents of the children in the running of the school (e.g. in setting the syllabus
etc.)? Please specify.
The parents meetings are conducted once in 2 months. The parents are explained about the children’s
education. If the child is a slow leaner or the child is having any other Physical or Psychological problem.
The parents are made aware about the child’s status by the social worker.
24. What are your expansion plans for the future (e.g. adding more classes or schools)?
Pneuma had started the construction of the building.
Planning to shift the home to that place by 2014.
Because of the lack of spacious and other essential facilities.
25. Do you have any suggestions on how Asha can be a positive influence in changing the education
scenario in India?
Asha helps Pneuma in the 0ne third of the total expenses. The educational expenses are supported by Asha.
Which is essential for the program.
Where the children receive their basic educationwith the support of Asha. The deprived children enjoys their
schooling, which is the major milestone of their life.

Please note that:
a) Our chapter’s evaluation/due diligence of your project/organization will begin in Quarter 1 of
Calendar Year (CY) 2014, and final decision on funding will be communicated to you latest by March 31,
2013. Hence, if project is approved, we encourage you to expect earliest credit of funds in April 2014
b) As a policy, Asha San Francisco sends annual funds in two equal installments, at an interval of 6
months. If the project demonstrates need for higher or lower funds in any particular 6-month cycle, we
may be able to make an exception to the above rule on a case by case basis. We reserve the right to
verify such need at any time through means such as Asha site visit, and/or documentations/other proof
to be submitted by the project/NGO

remaining amounts, you reserve the right to raise them from other sources and/or not
implement the components not funded us Asha SF. You will inform us (via email) as soon as you
have information about this, or in the 6-month progress report, whichever comes earlier.
