bothmobileandsimple.AfterMichael’spresentation,MelissaEndicott,arepresentativefromPortlandStateUniversitySchoolofExtendedStudiesshoweduswhatcoursesareavailable.

Withthisconsequentialinformationinourminds,welearnedinthenextsessionshowtobe“ChampionsofChange”inthefourtrackstofollow:Leadership,SoftSkills,CareerManagementorProjectManagementToolsandTrends.Attendeescouldselectallthepresentationsinonetrackorintermingleallfourtracks.Therewere16presentationsinall,eachwithaspeaker(s)withexpertiseintheirtopic.Duringeverypresentationbreak,Ioverheardpeoplediscussingwhatinformationwasofferedandhowitwouldapplytotheirparticularjoborsituation.Itwasrefreshingtohearexchangesofanalysis,applicationsandinformationaboundamongmyfellowprojectmanagementprofessionals.
Theconferencewasscheduledinsuchawaysothatlearningopportunitieswereregularlyavailable.Duringthelunchbreak,MichaelDawsonfromOracleshowedhowtocapturedataatthesourcetoincreaseefficiency.Afterhim,PeteBrightrepresentingCadence,addressedrespondingtobusinessesurgencythroughprogram/projectmanagementpaths.TimRuncieandDocDochtermannfromAdvisicondiscussedthedifferencesbetweenportfolio(doingtherightthings)andproject(doingthingsright)managementalongwithbriefingsofthecurrentdataandtrackingsoftwaretoolsavailable.Duringthesession

A Program is Not a Project on SteroidsFailure to Satisfy
Large,complicatedprojectsfrequentlyfailtosatisfytheircustomers.Becauseoftheirsizeandcomplexity,theymustcoordinatemultiplerelatedstreamsofprojectwork,allofwhichmustbesuccessfulatjusttherighttimeinordertodeliverthecompletesolutionthatthecustomerneeds.Forexample,consideraprojecttocreateanewproductsuchasanext-generationtabletcomputer.Thisnewproductmusttietogetherelementsasdiverseashardwareandsoftware,newservices,customersupport,customintegrationforcorporatecustomers,andchanneldevelopment.Failuretocoordinatealloftheseelementsintoanintegratedsolutionmeansfailingtosatisfycustomersandgeneratesufficientrevenue.
Failuretocoordinatecausesinternaldamage,too.Projectsworkingatcross-purposescausechaoswithintheperformingorganization,wastingscarceresourcesandtime.Theycanleadtoafragmentedproductlineorenterprisearchitecture,thusdrivinguplong-terminventory,development,andsupportcosts.
Separate,uncoordinatedprojectscan’tovercomethesechallenges,butaprogramcan.Aprogramisanintegratedmethodtomanageagroupofrelatedprojects,thusobtainingbusinessbenefitsthatwouldbeimpossibleiftheyweremanagedindependently.
Creating a Symphony
Aprogramisnotmerelyaprojectonsteroids.Itismorelikeaconductorleadinganorchestra.Justastheplayersintheorchestraplaythenecessarynotes,theprojectsintegratedbyaprogramdomostoftherealwork.Butwithoutaconductor,themusiccreatedbyacollectionofindependentplayerswouldnotcoalesceintoagrandsymphony.Similarly,
withoutaprogramacollectionofindependentprojectsdoesn’tworktogethertocreateanintegratedproductorsolution.

WhenIfoundoutaboutthefieldofprojectmanagement,Iwantedtoknowmoreabout“whatdoprojectmanagersdo?”IwenttoseveralpeopleandtheyrecommendedIjoinPMIandvolunteer.SoIwenttothePMIPortlandChapterwebsiteandinitiallysawapositionforaproofreaderandthoughttomyself,“Icandothat”.Ihadjustfinishedajobworkingatacommunitynewspaper
