I was pleased and excited to see the number of new members at our chap-ter meeting this month. We are growing and I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can. The chapter has been a great development tool for me, and I hope you are taking advantage of the educational and networking opportunities.

I am currently preparing to leave the company that I have worked at for the last 10 years to take on a new and challenging role at another company. It has made me reflect on the things I have learned during that time; love what you do (even if you don’t), become an expert (even if you aren’t), and above all else, it is people and relationships that matter most.

Speaking for myself, and the rest of the board, if there is anything we can do to help you love your job more, develop your skills, or build better relationships, let us know. We look forward to helping in any way we can.

Adam Tidwell President, PMINU

Topic: How to Hold an Effective Meeting 101

Location: Salt Lake Community College - Sandy, Utah

How often do you leave a meeting with a smile of accomplishment on your face and the thought racing through your mind, “Wow! We really achieved a lot! Whoever paid for that meeting cer-tainly got their money’s worth.!” Or, how often do you leave a meeting with a quizzical look on your face and the thought racing through your mind, “What in the world was that all about? That was the biggest waste of time and money I’ve seen in months. I’m glad I’m not footing the bill for that goat-rope!”

My guess is the former is the exception and the latter is the rule. Most people simply do not know how to hold an effective meeting. They don’t know how to structure the event, nor how to prepare for it administratively or technically, and they certainly do not know how to execute the meeting. Most people think that if they merely fill a room with good, well-intentioned people, good results will magically appear within 60 minutes.

The first program management meeting I held was on 15 August 1979. I can identify the date with great specificity because at the time I had not a clue about how to hold an effective meeting, I was pretty sure the event would be a disaster, and I never wanted to forget it…so I scheduled it on my birthday! My premonition was correct; the meeting was a gold-medal failure. But as I left the con-ference room I swore to myself that it would never happen again, that I would never make the same mistakes again and that I would learn how to consistently execute “Wow” meetings. Well, it didn’t, I didn’t, and I did.

Volunteer and Community Outreach with PMI-NUC

Stay Tuned! We

Need YOU!

Giving Back to Our

Communities in

2015

PMINUC will be giving back to

our communities in 2015.

January will see a kick-off of military and academic

outreach programs. Standby for upcoming news

about these exciting programs.

“Everyone can be great because anyone can serve.

You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You

don’t even have to make your subject and your verb

agree to serve . . . You only need a heart full of grace.

A soul generated by love.”—Dr. Martin Luther King

Granite School District Pilot Projects Established

The Community Outreach team, under the direction of VP Teri Gee, has successfully established to pilot projects at high schools in the Granite School District. Our program supports the student Future Business Leaders of America organization as they execute their service projects and compete statewide and nationally. Our objective is to develop a standard program that can be expanded into other cities, districts and schools along the Wasatch front, matching mentor teams with FBLA and other student organizations.

George Coon was recently appointed Director of the High School Outreach program. George also leads the Granger High School team which includes Erik Spielvogel, Rodney Spade, and Fred Ledward. He and members of his team are currently working with Granger high school to support their service project by teaching project management concepts. Rodney Slade was on hand for December's workshop, presenting the trip constraint triangle in a way that made it relevant to the students' project. The group has been progressively elaborating the project charter by was of the WBS and a stakeholder/communication artifact especially created for the FWI program by Lauren Elkins.

2015 Board of Directors Elections:

April 2015 Elections

If this is something you might be interested in job descriptions will be available in the February and March luncheons. For those feeling inspired and inquisitive board members can answer questions about what would be involved in fulfilling the various roles.

Watch for further updates as the elec-tions approach.

Chapter Book Club

We have created a list of books for our members based on the

feedback we received at the luncheons. Most of the people we

talked to are interested in learning more about leadership and

how to positively influence team members when costs are cut

and more is required with less resources.

On our current list you will find 20 book recommendations that cover a variety of topics including leadership, communication, project management, personal devel-

opment, team work and how to overcome obstacles and disadvantages. Take a peek, there is something

here for everyone.

Please provide your feedback and let us know what else you are interested in learning at the luncheons

or through the book (or e-book) club by sending an email to:

Elena Balasa at [email protected].
