worship. Philippians brings a lot of timely insight into our challenging times. In the last four months, we have dealt with many unique challenges as God’s

people at First Baptist, and as a nation. We have faced a pandemic, an economic crisis, and a major social and political crisis in the last five months. As a result, our routines have been interrupted, our anxiety has been elevated, and our relationships with our friends, neighbors, families, and enemies have all been strained. In addition, there are many of you who have been grieving the loss of friends and loved ones. Several of you are also dealing with a myriad of health concerns.

The Philippian church faced several challenges as well at the time the apostle Paul penned his letter to them. Many were struggling economically. They had been persecuted. The founder of their congregation was in prison.

Yet, Paul does two unique things in the midst of the difficult circumstances the people of Philippi are facing. First, he encourages his people to have a “mindset” that is Christ-centered. This attitude focuses on opening their eyes to see how God might still be at work in the middle of their struggles. Secondly, he repeatedly challenges the Philippian church to be joyful, while modeling that joy throughout his letter.

God, through his Word, encourages us to have a similar approach to the anxieties and hardships we face today. First, allow Christ to rule your patterns of thinking. Do this by focusing on the good, the true, the beautiful, the noble, the admirable and the praiseworthy things that are going on around you (Philippians 4: 8-9). Use your discontent to push you into action that will bring about the change you want to see.

And choose to be joyful. Don’t live a pouty, embittered, hopeless existence. Instead, attempt to see the blessings around you. Choose to live with passion for Christ and his kingdom. Look for opportunities to be grateful instead of grousing. Choosing joy is difficult yet important work for the Christian. This is especially so when the world around us is angry, tense, violent, and hopeless. We need to offer a different way of thinking, a different attitude, and a different story.

Think on these things! Blessings, Pastor Clint

Looking Ahead….

For several months, I have been discussing the possibility of having multiple worship services during this time where COVID-19 is challenging us to socially distance. As church leaders, we have watched participation in our current service, and been patient to wait and see if that service gets to capacity. Even in this summer, with attendance generally a little slower, there have been a few Sundays where we have been close to capacity. And, I would like us to have room for everybody who wants to worship to have a place to do so safely.

So, my idea is this. I would like us to begin a second service, at this time temporarily while we are in the midst of the COVID pandemic, earlier on Sunday morning. The proposal is to have this service to be called a “chapel” service to have the following features:

Primarily traditional hymns and gospel songs—no more than 3 in a service

Structured simply with brief prayers, scripture, message No children’s message or children’s church Not broadcast via livestream or social media Limited to 45 minutes or less Probably beginning at or around 8:30The question is, how many would be interested or willing to come to a more traditional, smaller service earlier in the morning, probably running between August or September through December to start with? I want a small core of people eager to attend something like this before we put in the work to get it started. Please contact Pastor Clint at 719-468-9549 or [email protected]. with your input. Thanks,Pastor Clint Walker
