Plusquamperfekt is formed using the simple past tense form of haben or sein and the past participle form of the verb.

Simple past tense: haben

Ich hatte

Du hattest

Er hatte

Rules

Follow the same rules for haben and sein as are used with conversational past tense.Sein is used for: movement, change of state or seinHaben is used for everything else.

When to use PQP

If you have two events that happened in the past, the one that happened first will be in PQP.

Another clue is the word: Nachdem (afterwards)

So whats the difference:

Conversational past tense: Ich bin zur Schule gegangen.

PQP: Ich war zur Schule gegangen.

Conversational: Er hat eine Pizza gegessen.

PQP: Er hatte eine Pizza gegessen.

How to decide to use PQP

Ask yourself the following:

1.Are there more than one events that took place in the past?

2.Did 2 related events occur at different times in the past?

If you answer ‘ja’ to both questions, then use PQP for the one that happened the furthest back.

Putting it together with Nachdem:

Or

Ich habe im Internet gechattet, nachdem ich meine Hausaufgabe gemacht hatte.
