Social Networking in the real world

What did you do today to makesomething ordinary special forsomeone?

After the formality of the 2008 AnnualGeneral Meeting the Focus day will be aninformal but structured discussion for thebenefit of the active Plus member and theFederation as a whole.

The discussion will be fun, challenging andlively, outcomes currently identified being:

Members will be motivated to runan active Plus Group providingactivities and recruitment; a PlusGroup that is outgoing and activein the community

Members will have a positiveattitude and be willing to engagein anything, provided that it islegal

The Focus day will provide Focus on whatwe do and how we do it, two innovativemethods to achieve this will be employed;World Caf and FISH!

FISH! - The NEC has purchased FISH! askill that provides the process, tools andlanguage to generate the skills andenthusiasm necessary to design aFederation full of inspiration, creativityand innovation .

FISH! creates a common language , alanguage that will help improve the Plusculture by using four simple practices;

Be TherePlayMake Their Day andChoose Your Attitude

World Caf - As a conversational process ,World Caf is a simple, innovative methodof hosting conversations about questionsthat matter.

The conversations will link and build oneach other as members move betweengroups, cross-pollinate ideas, and discovernew insights into the questions or issuesthat are most important to Plus.

World Caf can evoke and make visible thecollective intelligence of any group, thusincreasing peoples capacity for effectiveaction in pursuit of common aims.

Focus 2008 is to be held on Sunday 24 thFebruary at the Falstaff Hotel, RoyalLeamington Spa.

If you care about the future of Plus andalso wish to be part of the future of Plusthen please attend this event.

For this event to run smoothly, guides areneeded to enable the discussion.

Such guides will gain insight into thepromoting of debate, an understanding of how to construct and produce such eventsand will gain experience that will help intheir careers.

NATIONAL CHAIRMANS COLUMN

Ive been amember of Plus for a very

long time,when I first joined Plus

(known as 18 Plus backthen), there were twoslogans popular at thetime; Well do anything!Provided its legal! and The more you put in toPlus, the more you getout!

The latter slogan was usedto encourage members toget involved with theorganising side of things -it was not used todiscourage those whodidnt want to join theCommittee. It was alsoused to encouragemembers to attend eventsoutside their local Groupat Area and Nationallevels.

In recent years thereseems to have grown aresentment of memberswho do not wish toparticipate in theorganising side of Plus.We also seem to hearfrom some ex-Plussersand current Plussers whocomplain that there is toomuch of the Committeeside of Plus.

If Plus is to grow then wehave to accept that we willhave members who do notwant to join theCommittee and who willonly be members foreighteen months to twoyears - this has to be

acceptable andencouraged if we are torecruit large numbers of

new members.

Such members do have avalue in Plus; obviouslythe increased numbers of members increasespotential attendance atevents, theres theincrease in funds throughmembership fees, subsand entry charges to

events. Such membersare fun to have around.

The first slogan: Well doanything! Provided itslegal! was used in allkinds of publicity to showthat Plus would have a goat any activity no matterhow daring or silly.

The success of events likethe MAD weekend and Now Get Out Of That seem to indicate that Plusmembers are still quitedaring, however it seemsto be a while since Plushas done something inpublic for Charity in fancydress!

I first became aware of Plus from a newspaperarticle about a charityfancy dress cricket match.

Perhaps we should re-introduce the idea of aNational Charity?

At the November Nationalmeeting we hope to beable to appoint thefollowing Officers:

should be encouragedthrough specialtraining events andthrough learning bydoing Committee postsInternet Co- ordinator;Publicity is animportant part of whatPlus needs to do andone of the main toolsof the NEC is the Web

MODERN FAIRY TALE

Once upon a time, thereexisted a group of peoplewho would stop at nothingin their search of a good

time, the wilder andwackier the activity, thebetter, especially if itinvolved lots of food anddrink and riotous parties!

These people really knewhow to live life to the full.So, who were they? andwhat happened to them?

Well, they used to becalled 'Grimsby andCleethorpes 18 Plus', butwhen members becamemore 'plus than 18', it wasfelt that it was time tomove on and the Groupclosed.

All fairy tales should havea happy ending, but thisstory doesn't, because itisn't over yet; thesepeople are still here, onlythey're now called 'LincsQuest' and we celebratedour fifth birthday duringSeptember.

Starting with just fivemembers in 2002, theGroup has gone fromstrength to strength, with

a membership now of nearly fifty.

Last year, we becamevictims of our own successwhen our venue becametoo small and we had to

make the decision tomove to larger premises,otherwise there wouldhave been no room forfurther growth and allpublicity would have tohave been suspended!

The bizarre excesses of youth may have givenway to more 'grown up'activities, but we stillbelieve in enjoying

ourselves. We have agood mix of members,singles and couples, maleand female, with agesranging from 30s to 60s.A full programme of events awaits anyone whowishes to join andactivities have includeddays and nights out,theatre and cinema trips,

ghost walks, bowling,hiking, parties andbarbecues, not to mentionarchery and gliding.

So, if you do have anaging group and arestruggling to recruit in the18-35 age range, why notlook at becoming aSecond Tier Group - it

could well give you andthe Group a new lease of life.

We've certainly found thatthere is a market outthere and it has beenencouraging to see so

many new people join theFederation.

Anniversary Party

We had a FANTASTICnight on WednesdaySeptember 5th, with fortypeople there; twenty-fiveLincs Quest members,seven from Kings Lynn

Plus and eight prospectivenew members, whom wedidn't know about as thearticle which they saw inthe paper hadn't printedour phone number

To say it was busy is anunderstatement and theatmosphere was buzzing!.I don't think Geoff and Isat down till about 10.45pm and Kings Lynn didn't

leave us until after 11 -haven't they got homes togo to?!!

Two prospective newmembers will definitely be joining as they paid forthe Christmas meal andanother three have theirnames down for eventsand look likely.

SOCIAL NETWORKING ON-LINE

According to TheEconomist; "In America,people are FLOCKING tosites categorised as 'netcommunities and chat'chiefly social networkingweb-sites such asMySpace, Bebo andFacebook. Traffic tosuch sites is poised toovertake traffic to sexsites any day now."

The growing interest insocial networking siteshighlights the fact thathuman beings are socialcreatures. For our livesto have meaning weneed to interact and not just be spectators orvoyeurs. The bestinteractions are in the

real world, in person,face to face.

Facebook

Facebook is proving tobe quite popular withPlussers; I am aware of about forty membersregistered already!

With tons of Plusvideo footage andphotos uploaded to theFacebook web site andwith the "Groups" thatare Plus relatedexpanding quickly, ourorganisation isbecoming quite visible!

For example, I often see

someone posting anotification that theyare attending a Groupnight or weekendPlussing activity, and if Isee it then all theirother friends can too! Itis possible to post anactivity on their eventscalender (such as:-

Weekend at SunnyHunny (WASH 2007)that people can invitetheir other plussingfriends to too.

The more of us who useit, then the more visiblewe become - especiallyif we all mention it onour profiles, post eventson the calender and jointhe Plussing groups like

"Plus" and "WASHAppreciation Society"etc.

Building up links on-linewill have a knock oneffect to our Groupsoffline!

You've all seen the BBCTV programme, whereCelebrities trace backtheir family tree to findtheir ancestors aresome aristocrat or anaxe-murderer... It's sopopular that ITV did asimilar one with "YouDon't Know You'reBorn"

So I decided to tracemy family tree, maybe Iam unknowingly relatedto some wealthy familywho have died out toone rich old man whocan leave me all hismoney when he dies.

It was quite easy to getstarted, a bit of familyknowledge from myMother and a monthsfree trial on theAncestry.co.uk web siteto get access to thecensus results for the1800's and I was

away...

This is part of what Ifound.

My Grandfather wasWilliam Bettis. HisFather was also calledWilliam Bettis and hisFather was James Bettis

who in 1868 married alady called Emma

Hudgill. Emma andJames had ninechildren, along with myGreat GrandfatherWilliam they had fourother boys and fourgirls.

Their eldest daughterwas Eliza Bettis, nowEliza had twelvechildren herself - two of them before she gotmarried so theyretained the Bettisname, the second of these was a boy calledArthur, who had a soncalled Frederick Bettis,and Frederick had adaughter calledMargaret.

Margaret Bettis marrieda man called Ronald

Filer, and they hadthree children, theyoungest a son calledDavid.

David Filer, Dave Filer...sounds familiar... Yes,that Dave Filer.

It turns out that the

National ActivitiesOfficer, Mr Filer, and Iare third cousins, onceremoved.... Can anyonesee any familyresemblance??? (... andplease, no commentsabout Mr Filer'sancesors being born outof wedlock!).

So be careful if youexplore your family

tree... you never knowwho you might find youare related to!

GM 2008

The 2008 AnnualGeneral Meting is to beheld on Saturday 23 rd

February at the Falstaff Hotel, Royal LeamingtonSpa.

The National Chairmaninvited all Groups andmembers to attend atthe 2007 AGM and aresolution at the MayNEC meeting was alsopassed inviting allmembers to attend thisevent and alsoappointing Midland AreaChairman, AdamRedshaw as AGM 2008Co-ordinator.

In addition Groups aremandated to send up totwo delegates torepresent their Group atthe Annual GeneralMeeting.

SADY 2007

SADY and Dalesbridgeare an excellent basefor exploring the Dales,English Lakes, Forest of Bowland, Skipton andSaltaire.

Corinna tells me thatfifty members attendedSADY contributing tothe extremely relaxedfriendly atmosphere.

May I say as anorganiser, how much Ienjoyed participating inthis event and leadingthe walks.

It was a lovely relaxingway to spend a holidaywith a lively mix of old

friends and new faces.

We had a wonderfulweekend of warmth andsunshine. My washing isgetting very wetoutside.

Aside from touchingfootpaths that I had not

previously scouted, thehighlights were asfollows:

watching the landladyof the Harts HeadHotel manage thefront of house in away that would putMr Ramsay to shame

exploring the villageand church of Giggleswick

exercising my wokand culinary skills forMr Smith

I would like to thankAdrian Barnard for hisenergy and being willingbus driver, Pete Mannfor being First Aider andRalph Grimble for beinga willing Tailend Charlieon the walk toGiggleswick (there weretwenty-five personson a walk of over fivemiles).

It is pleasing to know

that the Plus Boule setswere used, they areavialible forcompetitions and Groupnights.

Corinna and I havediscussed the 2008event. We werewondering if there are

volunteers who wouldlike to help run thisevent and gain supportin learning to runNational scale events?

MW@MK - MAD 2007

Where to startat the beginning!

The party started for 5Southampton Friendersand South HampshireQuesters on Fridaynight.

We squeezed ourselvesand all of our luggageinto Richs car (yes, Ihad the biggest bag).Within 5 minutes wewere happily settled onthe motorway havingbroken out the applelaces, tortilla chips,bottles of water,sweeties, chocolatebars, biscuits, kitkatsand carrot sticks(courtesy of the ever

health conscious Sam).

Not far up the A34 wehit a spot of traffic andcrawled and crawledand crawled but cameup with a few games toentertain ourselves.

We finally rolled into

Milton Keynes at around8:30pmand swiftlymade ourway to ourhotel withminimalgettinglost,arriving ataround3:00am. If youve

ever been to MiltonKeynes and sufferedwhat I suppose could bedescribed as theirattempt at sign posts youll appreciate that6 hours to locate oneshotel is a pretty goodtime. We enjoyed abrief bevy in the barand called it a night.

Up the next morningand after a heartybreakfast we headed off to the Airkix, the indoorsky diving.

This was an amazingexperience and one Idrecommend to anyone.Getting to hover aroundon top of a giant fan istrickier than it looks.I did nearly fall out of

the door at one point luckily the instructorcaught me just in time!

After a quick bite forlunch we raced off tothe go-karting track andpicked up a few otherPlussers to join in theevent.

In our second boiler suitof the day, we had awell-fought and fiercebattle for the top spot,but as I hope youreaware by now (but Illtell you again anywayas I love getting to saythis) first place wasawarded to HelenMorton, with her mildlybitter younger brotherrolling up in secondplace. Hows your silvertrophy Rich? Proudlydisplayed on themantlepiece yet?

One of the quotes fromthe weekend was fromyours truly, when Ideclared to Matt thatthe only reason that Icame in fifth and he

finished sixth was notso much down to mydriving skill, but ratheryour lack of as he spunout spectacularly on abend and allowed me tosneak past.

Happy and beginning toache we headed back tothe pub and then wentout for a fabulous tapasdinner.

After such an eventfulday we returned to thehotel in dribs and drabsand met up atSnowzone at 8.30Sunday morning allbleary eyed and alreadyexhausted.

Helen suggested thatnext time we just do acouple of the eventsover the weekend as itwas a bit much to packit all in over the twodays. Richs responsewas well thats why itscalled the MadWeekend at Milton

Keynes, otherwise itwould just be called the Weekend at MiltonKeynes. Glad wecleared that one up,nice job Rich.

Having kitted up andlooking fab we got outonto the slope and gotto ski and board withvarying degrees of success, but with lots of laughter had by all.

We headed off in searchof brunch and afterbeing fed and wateredwe checked out of thehotel, met up in the barand went off to AerialExtreme.

This is a rope andbridge assault course up

in the trees and despitebeing tied on by aharness I found this themost psychologicallychallenging event of all.The difference of being15 feet up in the aircompared to being onthe ground is incredible,but we all found our

balance and by the endof the course werereally enjoyingourselves.

By this point we weretired, aching, stiff,bruised, hungry andready to come homeafter a fantasticweekend!

The drive back waspretty standard but ouraching limbs seized upon a number of occasions. We were allpretty relieved to makeit back home to have abath and crawl into ourown beds.

What a fabulousweekend and superblyorganised; everythingran like clockwork!Thank you to Kirsty andRich for all of their hardwork, believe meorganising something

like the MW@MK is notfor the feint hearted. Asuperb effort!

Final count: Seriouslyinjuries (0), bruises(multiple), hangovers(several), hours of sleep(too few), siblingrivalries rekindled (1),

cups of strong coffeeconsumed (dozens),number of smiles andlaughs (infinitely toomany to count),

WASH 2007

It is quite possible tooverlook that WASH isan ideal opportunity foryou to have a relaxingAutumn break in thecompany of friends inthe popular Norfolkcountryside at a muchreduced price than youwould expect to pay atCentre PARCs or othersimilar centres (Foursharing at Centre ParcsThetford in similaraccommodation overthe same weekendwould be 112 each).

For a start we will beoccupying the centre'stop of the rangeaccommodation, whichin mid-summer wouldset you back the bestpart of 1,000 perweek. All units arewarm, cosy andhave all thefacilities youwould expect.

Your bed is evenmade for you onarrival. All have

colour TV's andmany have

microwave ovens, dishwashers and DVDplayers.

On site we have anindoor swimming poolwith twoorganised aquaaerobics sessionswith Jacuzzi,sauna andGymnasium.There is also ahighly regardedCountry club andnine hole golf course, all of which are

available tomembers

attending. Youwill also have theopportunity to tryyour hand at

Laser Clay PigeonShooting.

The Norfolk coastline gives the moreenergetic a chance forspectacular walking andthe area is steeped intraditional CountryPubs. Within a fifteen

minute drive of Searlesis Royal Sandringham,with over 1,000 acres of

woodland to explore. If retail therapy floatsyour boat, then the Cityof Norwich is less thanan hour away and hasrecently opened a new

shopping centre whichhas been described asone of the best in theUK.

As we have said, webelieve the partyatmosphere at WASH issecond to none, but if arelaxing stress freebreak in the company of friends is what youfancy then WASH hasthe answers

NEAT 2007 - LEEDS

NEAT 2007 started off inthe very centre of Leedswith a spicy bang whenall attending the Fridaynight went to the SpiceQuarter on MillenniumSquare; food typesincluded; Thai, Chinese,Indian and Italian.

The rest of the eveningwent on well into theearly hours of Saturdaymorning with drinks atvarious pubs . . . in factit was going so well thatone of the NEATCommittee (John),missed his train hometo Huddersfield andanother of theCommittee, one Alisonhad an argument with aBouncer hoping that the

evening could continuebeyond closing time!

Saturdays National PoolCompetition at theElbow Room was anextremely entertainingtournament, with somevery good talent andskill exhibited frommany competitors.

Following the PoolCompetition there wastime for people to viewLeeds at their leisurebefore the sumptuousdinner at Bewleys HotelBrasserie.

The evening in theWellington with WhiteHot and Blue as ourentertainment was areal treat, the bandwere truly outstanding.

Bradford Plus Grouporganized SundaysBATH (Bradford AnnualTreasure Hunt); it was agreat way to wind downwhilst enjoying someculture in the RoyalArmories museum, areally relaxing andenjoyable end to asuperb weekend.

Jamie Woodbridge of Solihul Plus Group waswinner of the NationalPool Competition for thesecond year running.Coventry Plus membersDave Filer and PeteMann were second andthird respectively.

The competition washeld at this years NEATand the venue was TheElbow Room, Leeds.

The winning team inBATH was MatthewDickinson & AndreaRutter of Chiswick Pluswith Bradford memberMark Randall andHuddersfield memberJohn A Smith.

Treasure Hunt - results

Eight teams took part inour annual NationalTreasure Hunt on July7 th starting at 4:30 p.m.at the Tattershall Castleon The Embankment.

The theme was the Tourde France. All teamshad to go to theprologue route and getanswers from the raceIt was very crowded butwe could see the riderscoming through byGreen park.

The route then took inthe St James Palacearea, Convent Garden,Somerset House andLincoln Fields.

All the teams did verywell and the resultswere very close Teamsfrom Barnet & Essexshared top 1st place,with Cheading 3rd, alltaking home the prizemoney.

Thank you to everyonewho participated, and toall the organisers, Brian,Tina, Andy, Adrian, andRob.
