KINGS was established two years ago to fill the pool of nuclear engineers needed to meet this demand. The strategic agreement with Bentley will enhance the skills of nuclear professionals from around the globe who attend KINGS. I greatly appreciate Bentley Institute's contribution to this learning opportunity and for its forward-thinking investment in the nuclear power sector. It will help South Korea establish a leadership position in the design, development, maintenance, and operation of nuclear power plants." CEO Greg Bentley said, "At Bentley, sustaining the infrastructure professions is a key component of our mission, so we are always pleased to help support the continuous education of budding as well as seasoned engineers. It is particularly gratifying to support the work of KINGS, given the crucial importance of nuclear power plant creation to our world's sustained economic growth and our global community's quality of life - as we continue to expend our finite fossil fuel resources. On behalf of my Bentley colleagues, I want to thank KEPCO for its KINGS initiative and the work it has already accomplished in bringing new talent to the multiple disciplines that comprise the field of nuclear engineering."

Delcam now has wholly-owned subsidiaries in China, India, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and joint ventures Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. "We have a different approach to many companies in that all our employees in our various Asian operations are local to the country,” Mr Dickin explained. "We have been extremely lucky in finding some excellent partners that are exceptionally talented people with a real passion for our business. For example, we have worked with our joint venture partners in Korea and Taiwan for more than twenty-five years, while the Managing Director of our Indian subsidiary was the first employee when it was originally established.” Even having such well-established representation in the area doesn’t remove the need for good communications from the Birmingham headquarters to the region. Delcam staff from the Chief Executive, Clive Martell, downwards make regular visits to Asia. In particular, the technical staff attend regular training events and user meetings to keep both local Delcam staff and customers up to date with the latest development in the company’s software. All this travel is essential in developing the personal relationships that are still vital to Asian customers, according to Mr. Dickin. "UKTI has given significant support over the many years that we have operated in Asia, including organizing trade missions and helping us at exhibitions,” said Mr. Dickin. Analysis (FEA) software is playing a role in undergraduate teaching and composites research at Santa Clara University (SCU). "The unique capabilities of Marc to simulate composite curing and shrinkage is critical in the development of an optimal curing cycle that minimizes curing cycle time and part warpage," said Adjunct Professor T. Kim Parnell of Santa Clara University (SCU). Curing requirements are strongly dependent on both the part geometry and the resin system. Thermosetting resins are generally exothermic, meaning that they generate heat as they cure. This heat generation may be significant, particularly for thick parts. Likewise, the resin system undergoes shrinkage as it cures. There are competing effects of the need for sufficient external heat applied to initiate the curing, then heat generated by the curing itself, shrinkage associated with curing, and generally thermal expansion from the elevated temperature. For these reasons, a coupled thermal-curing-mechanical analysis is essential to accurately predict the curing profile, time to cure, degree of cure, and ultimately any warpage, distortion, or residual stress in the final part. All of these effects are tightly coupled, and the capability in Marc is critical to create acceptable parts, according to Professor Parnell. As composites are taking a larger role at SCU in terms of both projects like the SAE Formula Hybrid vehicle, and in classes like Composite Materials and in Finite Element Theory & Applications, students are learning first-hand about the requirements and special considerations needed for composites.

Spec Modeling Integrates Specifications with Design Models 10 July 2012 The Engineering Essentials Company, LLC (TEEC), a Philadelphia-based startup, is developing a specification modeling system that promises to advance information modeling and mobility by tightly integrating specifications with design models (CAD/BIM). Exton, Pa.-based Bentley Systems, Incorporated highlighted TEEC’s innovative SpecWave® technology during the recent Be Together: The Bentley User Conference in Philadelphia. Bentley Systems Vice President Santanu Das said, “SpecWave helps create dynamic specifications across all phases of the asset lifecycle, spanning design, procurement, verification, documentation, inspection, installation, and even operations.” He demonstrated how SpecWave can leverage data from Bentley’s AECOsim Building Designer (a single, integrated application that includes capabilities for architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems design, as well as for construction documentation) using classification codes to generate specifications, including warranties, material types, and other data. These specifications can then be integrated with and embedded into design models for purposes such as reference, design review, transmittals, handover, and more. “This enables project teams to consider contractual requirements earlier in the process, improving on-budget performance and reducing surprises and changes later on.” Bentley Systems CEO Greg Bentley, Senior Vice President Bhupinder Singh, and Vice President Harry Vitelli also cited TEEC’s advancements in information modeling and mobility. Vitelli demonstrated tablet-based field inspection using TEEC-generated specifications linked with BIM data for a hospital designed using Bentley’s AECOsim Building Designer. Dassault Systemes Continues to Expand Channel Diversification and Growth, while Preparing Partners to Embrace 3DEXPERIENCE 11 July 2012 Dassault Systèmes is currently holding its 3DEXPERIENCE PARTNERS FORUM, with 220 key partners of its indirect sales channel. This worldwide event focuses on best practices from the past years of successful channel management and growth, and how 3DEXPERIENCE is reshaping the way Dassault Systèmes partners provide support and opportunities to their customers. The Value Solutions channel will benefit from strategic briefings on Dassault Systèmes’ new 3DEXPERIENCE strategy and solution offerings, as well as 3DEXPERIENCE’s relevance to the entire spectrum of industries and customers. “Since acquiring management responsibilities for the channel from our longtime strategic partner IBM we’ve worked hard to effect a dramatic improvement in efficiency, increased partner recruitment and coverage worldwide, and an increase in the channel’s percentage of Dassault Systèmes revenue,” said Bruno Latchague, Executive Vice President, Distribution Strategy, Value Solutions, Dassault Systèmes.

Industry coverage, originally strongly focused on the automotive and aerospace industries under IBM channel management, has grown to cover all 12 industries currently targeted by Dassault Systèmes, including high-tech, industrial equipment, AEC, consumer goods, CPG & retail, life sciences, marine & offshore, financial & business services, energy, process & utilities, as well as transportation & mobility and aerospace & defense. “2012 marks the year in which we brought 3DEXPERIENCE to industries and evolved the business towards creating innovative product experiences. This will be critical to our partners as they move forward, finding the right experience solution to address their customers’ needs and their industry’s trends. We are excited to welcome 150 new partners within our Value Solutions network by the end of the year, across all of target industries, in all geographies,” continued Bruno Latchague. “Innovation is not restricted to big companies, but thrives best, some say, in small- to medium-sized agile organizations. Dassault Systèmes has never been just about big customers, and our 3DEXPERIENCE strategy, as well as the industry solution experiences we are bringing to market, emphasizes this fact,” said Monica Menghini, Executive Vice President, Industry and Marketing, Dassault Systèmes. “Our channel partners have been clamoring for exposure to our 3DEXPERIENCE strategy and how to leverage it to solve their customers’ business problems. They see it as a huge asset and competitive advantage.” 3DEXPERIENCE sales initiatives are being adopted by Dassault Systèmes partners at record speed, accelerating their growth across industries. Building on partner business successes in each geography, Dassault Systèmes is focusing on enabling a new level of partner-to-customer-to-user experience. STRAND Aerospace Malaysia (SAM), an engineering services company, illustrates these successes within the Value Solutions partner channel. Specializing in stress analysis and design of aircraft structures, SAM faced the dual challenge of streamlining its engineering processes and expanding its engineering services across various industry verticals. With the help of partner Feiran Tech and Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, SAM was able to significantly reduce the possibility of manual errors and increase the speed of production, thus improving overall efficiency. “Our customers, such as Strand Aerospace Malaysia, are leveraging the experience strategy introduced by Dassault Systèmes,” said Shabudin Md Saman, Managing Director of Malaysia-based Feiran Tech, one of Dassault Systèmes’ key Asia Pacific South channel partners. “Our customers don’t care about creating products or about PLM. They care about by delivering the right experience to their end users. The experience is what counts. 3DEXPERIENCE is exactly what we need to address our customers’ business problems and needs.” The 3DEXPERIENCE PARTNERS FORUM is taking place in Paris (July 10-12).

Delcam to Show Probing in FeatureCAM at IMTS 10 July 2012 Delcam will demonstrate new probing capabilities in the 2013 version of its FeatureCAM feature-based CAM software on booth E-3222 at the IMTS exhibition to be held in Chicago from 10th to 15th September. The ability to incorporate probing sequences into CAM programs makes it easier to undertake unsupervised production operations by allowing automated checks to be carried out before, during and after machining. Probing paths can be generated for five feature types: pockets, obstructed pockets and webs; inside or outside corners; bosses, bores and obstructed bores; radial bosses, bores and obstructed bores; and single surfaces. All of the resulting probing paths can be simulated and collision checked on the computer in the same way as cutting paths. The new probing options can be used in a variety of ways. Before machining, sequences can be created to check that the expected part and fixture have been loaded, and that they have been placed in the correct orientation. The position of the part can be confirmed and fixture offsets introduced if required to compensate for any errors. In a similar way, the amount of excess material can be detected on near-net shapes, such as forgings or castings. Offsets can then be introduced to give a more even distribution of the material that has to be removed, so improving machining efficiency. Additional probing routines can be introduced at any stage during manufacturing. For example, as a cutting tool wears it could be leaving too much material on the job. This trend could be monitored by regular probing of the parts being produced and a tool change introduced automatically as the material being left came close to the target tolerance. Alternatively, the tool offset could be adjusted to compensate for the reduced size of the cutter. Similarly, critical features could be inspected immediately after they had been created to check whether too much material had been removed. If the parts were found to be outside tolerance, they could be scrapped immediately, rather than carrying on with machining and waiting for the results of an inspection at the end of the complete process. For example, if a crucial bore within the part had to be made to a particularly accurate tolerance, this could be machined and checked first, before continuing with the other, less critical, operations. Probing routines can also be added for checking at the end of the process. While independent inspection on a separate measuring device would still be needed, the initial check on the machine would eliminate any parts well outside the required tolerance so eliminating wasted inspection time. In some cases, it might be possible for the independent inspection be undertaken on intermittent parts to confirm the results from the probing on the machine, rather than on every part, again saving inspection time.
