    struggling for Indian citizenship?

Fifteen year old Radha crossed the India-Pakistan border on the Thar Express in March, hopingfor a new life. Since then, shes lost a child her thirdbecause of poor medical care and

nutrition. She has no home, no income and, starting Monday morning, no country.

Part of a group of 480 Hindu refugees from Pakistans troubled Sindh province, Radha arrived

on a tourist visa obtained by saying she wished to attend the Maha Kumbh. Shes now staying in

a ramshackle building in Bijwasan, on the fringes of Delhi.

Nahar Singh with a Pakistani Hindu immigrant in the refugee camp in Bijwasan, South WestDelhi. Danish Raza/Firstpost

Nahar Singh, superintendent of Central Excise and Customs at Delhi airport, and two years shortof retirement, has emerged as something of a god for hundreds of Sindhi refugees whove been

crossing the border in recent years. In November, 2011, Singh says, he first came across a group

of 145 Sindhi refugees who were then living in a makeshift camp in North Delhi. He had histwo-storey building, then rented out for Rs 70,000 a month, vacated to make room for them.

Singh says he has approached the Foreign Regional Registration Office, the Ministry of Home

Affairs and the Delhi High Court to get the refugees Indian nationalitybut all in vain.

After staying put in Singhs property for around six months, adults slowly joined the sea ofimmigrants to flock to New Delhi every day. However, they also passed on Singhs contacts to

fellow Hindus in Pakistan who were desperate to relocate. The group of 480 who arrived on the

Thar Express in March made their way to New Delhi, and made their home in his building.

More, Singh says, are certain to follow, because attacks on religious minorities are continuingunabated.

Until the the time the refugees settle in, Singh says, hell take care of their meals and, if needbe, expenses. Hindu groups have pitched in, but resources are clearly scarce.

For the families in Singhs shelter, there is no going back to Pakistan. I will prefer dying here inHindustan than living in Pakistan, says 38 year old Seeta Ram, who is here with 17 members of

his extended family. For us, there is no dignified life in Pakistan. We live at the mercy of

Muslims. We cannot openly celebrate our festivals. We cannot cheer for the Indian cricketteam. In case of a clash between two communities, Ram says, he doesnt expect fair trail. Their

    police, their courts, he says.

Rams daughter Karma Bai says her husband has been cursing her ever since they arrived in

India. While he is here with me, his own family is in Pakistan. Please see if you can do anythingto get them here, says the woman, pointing to kids in a family album.

Sindhs Hindus are largely landless Dalit labourers, hard hit by both religious persecution as well

as their low social status and economic deprivation.

For the generation before Seeta Ram, things were not this bad in Pakistan. When were young,

there were no such issues like forcible conversion of Hindu girls to Islam or rape or assaults onHindu families. If life was not good, it was not bad either. But it all changed after the demolition

of the Babri Masjid in India. To take revenge, Muslims in Pakistan demolished temples. We

were traumatised, says the grandmother in one of these families.

In recent years, there have been a string of attacks on Hindusmost famously, the alleged

forcible conversion and kidnapping of Rinkle Kumari, which sparked global outrage.

Many among the refugees use angry language, attacking what they see as a Hindu country for

denying them citizenship. I am a Hindu, says 35-year-old Vasant Das. This is Hindustan. Howcan I be living here illegally? The government of the biggest democracy in the world cannot take

care of 480 people? And anyways, we never asked for partition. Muslims demanded it. So,

ideally, Indian Muslims should shift to Pakistan.

For the government, though, the issues are more complex. Refugees from persecution in Indias

near-neighbourhoodlike Sikhs from Afghanistan, Tamils from Sri Lanka, or even someAhmadis from Pakistandont have a right to citizenship, because India fears a tidal wave ofclaimants. Even though India has often been lauded for its treatment of refugees, it doesnt have

a law that allows them to claim entitlements and documentation.

Delhi authorities have told FirstPost they will ensure the refugees receive visa extensionsbut

cant hold out the hope of documents guaranteeing them long term stay. There are thousands of

cases like these, a senior Home Ministry official says. Frankly, we know theyll buy identity

documents, and begin a life as Indians. But the law is the law, and its for politicians to change,

    not us.

Nahar Singh believes they will meet the fate of the previous 146 immigrants. Government of

India neither gave them nationality, nor did it ask them to leave for Pakistan. They are citizens of

    nowhere, he says.

Pak Hindus too scared to return

New Delhi: The Pakistani Hindu refugees, who managed to flee the country and reach India, are

opposed to returning to Pakistan, saying they would prefer to die than go back.

"We don't know what will happen to us. But we know that if we are deported, it will be our

bodies, not us. We will die but not return to Pakistan," Dharamveer, a farmer from Pakistan said.

Facing deportation from India as their visas expired, these refugees are too scared to return to

    Pakistan following rising extremism there.

On March 9, Dharamveer along with other refugees crossed over to India through Jodhpur in

Rajasthan on the pretext of visiting the Maha Kumbh in Allahabad. The group reached Delhi on

March 10 and took refuge in a 28-room building owned by Nahar Singh in Brijwasan area insouth Delhi.

"Hindus are not safe there (in Pakistan). Daughters are abducted and forced to convert. We can'tcremate our dead as Pakistanis ask us to bury the corpses," said Dharmveer, who fled Hyderabad

in Pakistan's Sindh province with his wife and four children. "We want Indian citizenship so that

at least we can die here peacefully," he said.

Currently, there are more than 450 Pakistani citizens living in the building whose visas expiredjust on Monday. The group comprises 83 women, 86 men and 311 children, of whom one died a

    few days ago.

Nahar Singh, an ex-soldier, who is looking after the refugees, said, I have written to the

President's office, MEA and UN, but no one has responded yet."

However, there seemed to be a ray of hope for these Pakistani Hindu refugees facing deportation

from India after the government said, "There was a legal procedure available to them".

    Pakistani Hindus are Indias responsibility

Agniveer started its New Year 2070 with a visit to Bijwasan, New Delhi where around 480

Hindus from Pakistan have taken shelter in an erstwhile primary school building. These Hinduscame to India a few weeks ago in aftermath of a severe wave of hatred against non-Muslims in

Pakistan. Shri Sanjeev Newar and Dr DK Garg from Agniveer met the families in morning,

discussed their situation and worked towards a roadmap for them.

The details are indeed shocking. These Hindus cannot own any property or even demand

protection of their fundamental rights in Pakistan. They are forced to pay a Jaziya tax to

Mujahideen if they want protection of their lives and dignity of their women. Abduction of

Hindu women, especially unmarried girls is a common phenomenon. Thus, they are forced to

marry their children in early childhood to offer some degree of protection. The wages they get is

half for that of a Muslim. Hindus are considered untouchable and cannot even wear newclothes. Cows are cut openly in Hindu temples and idols desecrated. The bulk of Sindh

population remains in delusion that Islam alone is best religion and all Kafirs (an abusive

term used for non-Muslims) are worst of creatures. And hence there is no sin in torturing

Hindus unless they convert to Islam.

In 1951, Hindus formed 22% of Pakistani population (much more than the Muslim population

proportion in India today!). And today they have reduced to less than 1.7%. Either they areforced to convert, or live like third grade citizens, or indulge their women in flesh-trade. Rape

and abduction of women has taken an unprecedented high in last few years thanks to hatred spit

by various fanatic mullahs and Islamic research organizations.

Thus, these Hindus, for whom dignity of women and commitment to Hinduism, is more precious

than anything else, were left with no option but to come to India. They came on a tourist visa butare firm that they would not return to Pakistan. They would rather choose to immolate

themselves than allow a fanatic to rampantly abduct their women. So desperate have been the

situations that many families left their young children in Pakistan because their passports

and visa were not ready, before coming to India. They had to make the tough choice betweensafeguarding their rest of the families vs putting entire family under risk for sake of one loved

member. May God never show such tough situations to anyone.

They got a visa for one month from Indian government that got expired 2 days ago. Currently

their visa has been extended by one more month. They are restricted to stay within Delhi.

Agniveer demands that India issues unconditional citizenship to all minorities in Pakistan and

Bangladesh. Partition of India was an unethical, unnatural phenomenon that happened because

we could not counter the fanaticism of few hoodlums. Just like Manmohan Singh and LK Advanicould manage to come to India in 1947, not everyone was so lucky. We all know how trains and

trains of Hindus and Sikhs were butchered and raped by Pakistanis when they tried to come from

Pakistan to India during population transfer. The current Hindus, Sikhs and Christians in

Pakistan and Bangladesh are Indias responsibility. They are our own brothers and sisters.

India should take all extra-steps to claim back our own family members.

But in the interim, till our government wakes up to realities and its moral responsibilities, it is

duty of each and every Indian to support these family members across the border. Atithi Devo

BhavaGuest is Devata is Indias foundation. Why guests, India has gladly fed and glorified

even invaders and enemies. Should we not then open our arms for our own family

    members?

These Pakistani Hindus need us. We must provide for their food, security, job and education. Ch.

Nahar Singh, a retired army-man has singlehandedly supported these displaced Hindus in his

private property by offering food and shelter. Our heartiest thanks and naman to the hero. It is

time for all of us now to join hands in support.

Agniveer has listed a set of requirements to help these families:

    - Education facility for children (numbering roughly 200) - Agniveer has collaborated with afew Gurukuls and we aim to provide free education and complete financial support for around

100 to 150 of these children through admission in these Gurukuls.

The goal is that not only their education till graduation is completely taken care of, but also to

nurture torchbearers of Dharma from among them who could be the next Bismils, Lajpats andShradhanands.

All of those who have any links and associations in schools or Gurukuls in Delhi region are

requested to proactively help getting education for each and every eligible student.

    - Employment for youth - Most of these people are farmers or unskilled labors. And few arealso technicians and skilled labors. We sincerely urge all to provide employment to all of themso that they can live with dignity and self-empowerment.

    - Living Expenses - A bare minimum living standard with minimal hygiene, sanitation and food

would require an expense of around Rs 2 lakh per month.

All who are willing to contribute to this Yajna may donate to Agniveer

throughhttp://agniveer.com/join/funds/ . Please mail us clearing stating: PAKISTANI

The entire amount shall be used exclusively and ONLY for this cause.

Further, if you have clothes, medicines etc to spare, please do not miss the chance to be a

    Krishna to dear Sudama.

If you have additional house or flats to provide for shelter of these families, that would be of

    great help as well.

    Agniveers commitment

    1. Agniveer is collaborating with a few gurukuls to provide free education till graduation to

around 100 children. Our aim is to be able to absorb all children and even a few youths in

    educational drive.

    2. Agniveer is committed to provide financial support as well as support in kind for their decent

    living.
