korte beschrijvingen van alle activiteiten van het PAS Festival. Sommige lezingen of acts worden herhaald. Er zijn Engels- en Nederlandstalige lezingen. Voor het culturele programma gebruiken we zoveel mogelijk Engelstalige beschrijvingen, tenzij het een Nederlandstalig programma betreft. Het programma wordt per podium, gebouw of plek beschreven. Een deel van het programma wordt in blokken aangeboden. Voor de meeste programma’s moet u reserveren. Bij de losse (doorlopende) programma’s die onder specials vallen is reserveren niet van tevoren mogelijk, maar kan het ter plekke.

This booklet gives you the dates, times, locations, and short descriptions of all the PAS Festival activities. Some lectures or acts are repeated. There are Dutch and English-spoken lectures. Descriptions of activities in the cultural programme are given in English, unless they are Dutch-spoken. The descriptions are given per venue, building or location. Part of the programme is given in blocks. You will need to reserve for most programmes, and for some of the individual (continuous) programmes listed under specials you can reserve on site, rather than in advance.

Het Pleasure, Art & Science Festival (PAS) wordt voor de zevende keer georganiseerd. Dit jaar wordt daarmee het 45-jarig bestaan van de Universiteit Maastricht (UM) gevierd. Het is een traditie dat de Universiteit Maastricht aan het begin van het academisch jaar de deuren openzet om iedereen uit stad en regio te trakte-ren op een programma vol wetenschap, mooie muziek, theater en meer.

Het festival verhuist dit jaar naar het terrein van de Tapijnkazerne. Vanwege de coronamaatregelen zoekt Studium Generale de ruimte op. Zomerse tunes, swingende muziek, circus en straattheater; op gepaste afstand kan er in de buitenlucht genoten worden van acts op diverse podia. De deuren van de gebouwen gaan open voor diverse lezingen, talkshows en voor een cultureel programma van internationale studentenorganisatie Kaleido.

Hoe wonderlijk en bijzonder zal het zijn om elkaar weer te ontmoeten na een jaar waarin zoveel is gebeurd? Laten we er samen een mooi weekend van maken!

CoronamaatregelenDe coronamaatregelen die gelden op het moment dat het PAS Festival plaatsvindt, zullen worden nageleefd. Deze regels kunnen in aanloop naar het festival nog veranderen, ook kort voor aanvang. Het is daarom van belang de website van het festival goed in de gaten te houden. This is the seventh edition of the Pleasure, Art & Science Festival (PAS). This year we celebrate the 45th anniversary of Maastricht University (UM) with this festival. It is a tradition that the university opens its doors at the start of the academic year and treats everyone from the city and region to a programme full of science, beautiful music, theatre and more.

This year, the festival is moving to the Tapijn Barracks premises. Studium Generale looked for somewhere with plenty of space, due to the corona measures. Summer tunes, swinging music, circus and street theatre – you can enjoy the acts at various venues outdoors, at the appropriate distance from one another. The doors of the buildings will open for a variety of lectures and talk shows, and a cultural programme by the international student organisation Kaleido.

Won’t it be fantastic to meet up again, after a year in which so much has happened? Let’s make a great weekend of it together!

COVID-19 measuresWe’ll be complying with the measures that are applicable at the time of the PAS Festival. In the run-up to the festival, these measures may change right up to the last minute. So it’s important to keep a sharp eye on the festival website. Jan van den Berg is presenting a theatrical ‘report of my research’. Well-informed stories about his expeditions to the limits of the naked eye and the naked intellect. From the particle accelerator at CERN, to a disappeared oasis in the Libyan desert and to the question of whether 'the Big Bang is a weak bid'. Along the way, he discovers the poetry of flatworm sex. “A damn good performer who makes everything glow... He knows his business, he's an accomplished storyteller, whose practice of the art hinges on pleasure. We surf along on that pleasure”. (Loek Zonneveld in Theaterkrant)

Under the moniker Luwten, Dutch artist Tessa Douwstra records, writes, performs, and produces cunning pop that incites both the head and the heart. In the past, Douwstra’s music was an attempt at casting a light on the introverted, embracing comfort of your own solitude and selfhood. Her second album, Draft, takes on a different challenge: how to be that person with others in the room.

The name Draft speaks for itself. The songs evoke the feeling of a breeze underneath the door; a subtle reminder of becoming open to another. To illustrate this notion further, Luwten transmutes different sounds together with quizzical warmth: field recordings and organic noise are laced intricately with electronic sounds and melodic live instrumentation. On Draft, these productions tell as much of a story as Luwten’s compassionate vocals and soulful lyricism. The songs have been crafted right down to the smallest detail, while still retaining a certain fragility.

Anyone who has yet to be convinced of Douwstra’s craftmanship should lose no time in listening carefully to her new album, and of course attend this concert.

15:00Eli GoffaSinger-songwriter

Eli Goffa is the creation of Elie De Prijcker from Sint-Niklaas (BE). He grew up with his dad's record collection from the sixties and seventies, which you can hear in his fragile yet powerful self-written songs, inspired by CSN&Y, José Gonzales, Blind Faith and Ray Lamontagne. He easily wins over the audience with his virtuoso guitar playing and a voice that can bend all ways. Soul, roots and a bit of blues and funk.

15:30The RosenbergsJazz, Sinti Music

The most talented young generation from the Rosenberg family. Paulus, Johnny and Sani join forces to bring you modern jazz, as well as standards from the repertoire of Django Reinhardt. A new, fresh vocal contribution is given by the talented jazz singer Johnny in his rendition of songs from the Great American Songbook. Right from the first note, the Rosenbergs impress you with their virtuoso, razor-sharp and grooving ‘Jazz Manouche’. They display a breathtaking virtuoso that is almost careless. Rousing solos, a flawlessly swinging rhythm guitar, surprising solo bass parts and a telepathic interplay characterise this amazing trio.

The Maureens

Cacha Mundinho QuartetLusophone Music (Portuguese)

The Cacha Mundinho Quartet is a spanking new acoustic outfit that arose spontaneously during jam sessions by musicians living in the same neighbourhood, who took the time to delve into new sources of musical inspiration. Since the cultural sector lockdown was initiated, Joana Almeida and percussionist Sjahin During have been occupied with this new formation, intent on interconnecting the rich Lusophone music cultures. The word ‘cacha’ comes from Cape Verdean creole and is a corruption of ‘catch’. ‘Mundinho’ comes from ‘mundo’ and means ‘small world’.

The vocalist and guitarist Joana Almeida provides the compositions, which are enriched by the collaboration of Sjahin During on percussion, Maripepa Contreras on saxophone, Bence Huszar on contrabass.

20:30The MaureensIndie Music

The Maureens originated in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 2012, and have since had a great reception in the Netherlands and abroad. Vocalist and guitarist Hendrik-Jan de Wolff writes melodic indie songs, often with a somewhat melancholic slant. The Maureens’ music is characterised by the richly arranged vocals, often with polyphonic lead vocals and choirs, reminiscent of The Beach Boys and Big Star, as well as The Jayhawks and Teenage Fanclub. Almost all the Maureens spend their professional lives in the field of social work, providing care for the disabled and homeless. Their social involvement and experiences have a direct influence on the musical atmosphere and texts, which often touch on themes like loneliness, nostalgia and loss.

Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra reflects the melting pot of different cultures in Antwerp. Coming from very diverse musical backgrounds, the musicians have joined forces to combine the pure, raw energy of authentic Roma Gipsy/Greek and Turkish melodies with ultra-danceable ska grooves. The charismatic frontman whips up the energy on stage, presenting a huge diversity of styles and rhythms that push back the frontiers of what we know as ska. The striking melodies either radiate joy or are filled with melancholy, giving the best of everything. And the improvisation skills are a match for any jazz combo.

KOPS is een game dat wordt ontwikkeld door het innovatielab Politie in samenwerking met de Universiteit Maastricht. De applicatie richt zich op het leren herkennen van criminele personen en verdachte objecten. Tijdens deze presentatie kun je meedoen met je telefoon en leer je alles over de politie van morgen.

In hoeverre heeft de omgeving van kinderen invloed op hun gedrag? Wat is de invloed van de thuisomgeving en de (voor)schoolomgeving? Deze lezing gaat in op de invloed van de sociale en fysieke omgeving op de voeding en beweging van kinderen en hoe we ervoor kunnen zorgen dat kinderen gezonde gewoontes krijgen aan-geleerd.

In het afgelopen decennium is immuuntherapie uitgegroeid tot een van de meest hoopgevende behandelingen tegen kanker. Benieuwd hoe immuuntherapie werkt en waarom het in 2018 de Nobelprijs voor geneeskunde kreeg? Lotte Wieten legt uit hoe afweercellen getraind en geholpen kunnen worden om kankercellen te herkennen en te vernietigen.

Als een kind (uiteindelijk) verklaart dat hij of zij seksueel wordt misbruikt, dan reageren – ook de professionele – partijen vaak begrijpelijker-wijze emotioneel. Dat gebeurt dikwijls niet op basis van wat de wetenschappelijke kennis voorschrijft. In deze lezing vertelt Horselenberg waarom een rechtspsycholoog de aangewe-zen deskundige is om dit wetenschappelijke uitgangspunt te borgen.

De dodo is een uitgestorven niet-vliegende vogel die op het eiland Mauritius leefde. De dodo wordt vaak afgeschilderd als een onhandige, domme vogel die voorbestemd was om uit te sterven. Maar was dat ook zo? Kunnen we door de dodo te bestuderen, misschien iets leren over de biodiversiteitscrisis van vandaag?

Met de groei van de wereldbevolking neemt ook de vraag naar plastics toe en daarmee de negatieve gevolgen voor het klimaat en onze gezondheid. Denk aan het gebruik van fossiele grondstoffen dat klimaatverandering veroorzaakt en het groeiende plastic-afvalprobleem. Is het beter om plastic te verbieden of het te vervan-gen door andere materialen? Of kunnen we plastics ook duurzamer maken?

Sebastian Köhler neemt je mee in de laatste ontwikkelingen en inzichten en geeft nuttige tips voor een hersengezonde leefstijl. En die begint niet pas op oude leeftijd!

AI-gestuurde machines zijn meer en meer in staat tot zelfstandig opereren en presteren vaak beter dan mensen. Wat zijn de consequen-ties van deze revolutie voor de mens? Zullen menselijke arbeiders overbodig worden? Of juist veel productiever? Mark Levels bespreekt relevant onderzoek op dit gebied en betoogt wat overheden, bedrijven en individuen kunnen doen om zich voor te bereiden op het werk van de toekomst.

Een vluchteling in het Globale Zuiden is meer dan alleen een passieve ontvanger van humanitaire hulp. Zo zoekt een vluchteling ook toegang tot de arbeidsmarkt. In dit verband heeft men het over het recht op werk voor vluchtelingen. Zolang dat er is, redden ze zich wel. Maar is het wel zo simpel?

Waarom bevat het universum geen antimaterie-deeltjes? Waarom bestaan materiedeeltjes in drie vrijwel identieke kopieën? Het oplossen van deze puzzel is het doel van het LHCb-experiment dat plaatsvindt in de deeltjesversneller van CERN bij Genève, waar de Universiteit Maas-tricht bij betrokken is. Wellicht is er bij dit expe-riment een nieuwe natuurkracht ontdekt. Marcel Merk vertelt in deze lezing over dit experiment, dat een nieuwe kijk geeft op de allereerste fractie van het bestaan van het universum.

Culture is often regarded as the biggest barrier for women to enjoy their human rights. But the dynamic nature of culture and the fact that culture is important in giving a person a sense of belonging lead to the question of whether and how culture could be used to women’s advantage. During this lecture, Ingrid Westendorp will explore this question.

Over the past decade, immunotherapy has deve-loped as one of the most promising treatments for cancer. Lotte Wieten explains how immune cells can be trained to recognise and destroy cancer cells.

Why are there no antimatter particles in the universe? Why do matter particles exist in three virtually identical copies? Solving this puzzle is the goal of the LHCb experiment taking place in the CERN particle accelerator, near Geneva, in which Maastricht University is involved. This experiment may have discovered a new force of nature. In his lecture, Marcel Merk discusses the experiment, which provides new insight into the very first fraction of the existence of the universe.

17.30 – 18.00 / 19.30-20.00Rondleiding Op het terrein van de voormalige Tapijnkazerne werken vrijwilligers aan de ontwikkeling van een biologische stadstuin. De Tapijntuin is een plek waar bezoekers verrast worden door wat de natuur te bieden heeft aan gezond voedsel. Hiernaast is de tuin de natuurlijke educatieve schakel van het Tapijnterrein. Tijdens deze rondleiding kunnen deelnemers ruiken aan en proeven van de kruiden, groenten en vruchten van dat moment. Je hoort iets over biologische teelt, permacultuur, bodemleven en compost. Als er nog tijd over is bekijken we ook het insectenhotel, het egelhuis, een wormenhotel en de bijenkasten.

Wat hebben wetenschappers en kunstenaars met elkaar gemeen?Wetenschap en kunst. Ze bieden allebei nieuwe perspectieven op de wereld, brengen je in verwondering, maken je nieuwsgierig of juist boos. Toch zijn het gescheiden werelden, de academie van de wetenschap en de academie van de kunsten. Een wetenschappelijk onderzoek maakt meestal geen gebruik van artistieke methoden en omgekeerd is een kunstwerk geen wetenschap. Laat staan dat we over een academisch artikel praten in termen als ‘mooi’. En toch zijn de verschillen soms minder groot dan ze lijken.

In vier gesprekken onderzoeken we de overeenkomsten en verschillen tussen de werkpraktijk van kunstenaars en die van wetenschappers. Waarom zoeken we naar bodemschatten en wat kunnen ze ons vertellen? Wat kan een arts leren van een kunstenaar? Klinkt een muziekstuk anders als een wetenschapper er onderzoek naar doet? En wat is er zo fascinerend aan de sterrenhemel?De presentatie is in handen van Luuk Heezen, programmamaker en presentator voor o.a. KUNST IS LANG en Nooit Meer Slapen.

Wie weleens een kuil graaft in Zuid-Limburg weet dat je vanzelf historische artefacten in de bodem vindt. Chaim van Luit is beeldend kunstenaar en zoekt met zijn metaaldetector naar sporen van het verleden, die hij dan op bijzondere wijze presenteert. Hij gaat in gesprek met Karen Jeneson, conservator van het Thermenmuseum in Heerlen, die net als Van Luit geïnteresseerd is in bodemvondsten, maar dan vanuit een heel andere invalshoek: archeologie.

19.00 – 20.00Wat kan een arts leren van een kunstenaar?Pieternel Fleskens en een medicus

Pieternel Fleskens, hoofd Research & Education van de Van Eyck academie, heeft voor de Universiteit Maastricht een vak mede ontwikkeld waarbij artsen leren kijken als kunstenaars. De hypothese is dat hierdoor het perspectief van de arts wordt verbreed en hij of zij nieuwe vaardigheden leert die de beroepspraktijk ten goede kunnen komen. Fleskens gaat in gesprek met een medicus om deze hypothese te onderzoeken.

Gideon Koekoek is als natuurkundige betrokken bij het ontwikkelen van de Einstein Telescoop in Zuid-Limburg. Met behulp van deze telescoop kan er onderzoek worden gedaan naar zwaartekrachtgolven, om zo meer kennis op te doen over het heelal. Beeldend kunstenaar Nathalie Brans is ook gefascineerd door datzelfde heelal, dat ze met behulp van bijzondere fotografie-technieken vastlegt. Ze gaan met elkaar in gesprek over onze sterrenhemel en alles, zichtbaar en onzichtbaar, wat we daarin kunnen ontdekken.

Peter Peters is bijzonder hoogleraar innovatie van klassieke muziek aan de UM. In samenwer-king met philharmonie zuidnederland onderzoekt hij hoe de opvoeringspraktijk van klassieke muziek innovatief kan worden. Heidi en van den Berg-Poessé is violiste bij philharmonie zuidnederland. Ze gaan met elkaar in gesprek over de invloed van wetenschappelijk onderzoek op de opvoeringspraktijk van het orkest.

In the performance “ MIKMAK “, Rein de Kok gives his all. The performance was inspired by a traditional musical clowns’ entrance, whereby music is made on all sorts of instruments. Hat manipulation, juggling and balancing on a tightrope are all circus disciplines that he really wants to do himself, which leads to some hilarious situations. What happens when you can’t choose, and you say ‘yes’ to everything? Is it just a question of getting on with it, or is the greatest art in this performance the choosing itself? Rein is an enterprising optimist who’s not afraid of taking risks, but is he actually capable of bringing a single task to its conclusion?

Barto (Bart Van Dyck) is a comic fool who hangs his show on a slack rope and entraps his audience with spellbinding contortionist routines. A gentle, crazed character, his show is a unique event that stirs the audience with its clowning antics and technical feats of brilliance.Originally from Belgium, Barto studied mime-movement theatre at Lecoq in Paris. He has performed his award-winning act in Europe, Canada, U.S.A., Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, China and Japan, making people laugh in eight different languages.

Dareyn – which refers to two worlds in the Ottoman language – was founded by Emine Bostanci in 2020, as a means to present her musical vision by collaborating with inspiring musicians. The music of Dareyn combines the mystical sound of the kemenche (string bowed musical instruments) – with its heritage of traditional music originating from Istanbul and the Silk Road – and the deep-rooted sound of the cello in a contemporary fashion. Emine Bostanci and her musicians blend their vocal talents with their instrumental expertise, creating a uniquely mesmerising soundscape. The repertoire takes its inspiration from the beauty of modality, the dynamic character of bowing and the rich world of rhythms. Their music creates dialogues where unspoken narratives are present in the imagination of each listener.

21:30Leán Jazzy African, Latin American and Mediterranean Music

Leán is a trio formed by Silke Clarysse, Otto Kint and Gielis Cautaers. They met in Brussels, Belgium, in 2014, and decided to share their passion for world music. They successfully combine guitar compositions from African, Latin American and Mediterranean origins with a jazzy double bass and subtle hand percussion. At the beginning of September 2016, Leán released their first album, called Pangea. Leán has had the honour of playing concerts all over Belgium and was invited to play at the Safaricom International Jazz Festival in Nairobi, Kenya. In January 2019, the trio released their second album, called Jarabi.

Bahghi is a singer, musician and songwriter from an Eritrean family, and was born and raised in Amsterdam. She has been playing classical violin since the age of four. After graduating in Jazz Vocals from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, in 2018, she focused on the development of her artistic vision. She writes, produces and records her own music and travels all over the world to gain inspiration. Getting to know different cultures and art forms has increased Bahghi’s self-awareness. Growing up as a bi-cultural person and not feeling totally at home in one place led to a continual quest for her own identity. This quest has brought about numerous journeys, creations, connections and collaborations. On 25 June 2021, her debut EP Sunshine’s Got The Blues was released on all the streaming platforms.

Even before the pandemic, the DIYA trio rocked venues with their uniquely complex, yet laid-back sound, coloured deeply by their friendship as well as their own individual experiences in life. Highly influenced by the music of today, the DIYA trio uses electronics mixed with acoustic instrumentation to create a soundscape full of mystery with an undeniable groove. Each deeply personal composition explores a stage in their lives while the improvisational aspect of the band allows the present moment to colour the music however it sees fit. Comprised of jazz students David Heim, Pratik Baniya and Nathaniel Hanson from the Conservatory of Maastricht, this up and coming band is a force to be reckoned with.

Influenced by traditional music from the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, the duo Triana y Luca perform to express an intimate encounter between folklore and the experimental. Bringing a new perspective to traditional music, their sound reflects a deep love for ancient know-ledge, legends, and nature.

Ameera (Malanghi Arts) is a British multidis-ciplinary artist and poet, currently residing in Maastricht. She uses art as a medium for catharsis. Her poetry sings pain and strife, as she explores grief, loss, race, and love. Ameera draws attention to themes that aren’t spoken about enough in society.

Brohlin is a hiphop and spoken word artist from Roermond. In one big web of melody, lots of rhyme and wordplay he speaks about his own experiences and thought processes. His fifteen-minute performance will be a mix of songs and spoken word. Brohlin’s music can be found on all streaming services, both with Dutch and English lyrics.

Beyond Me is the love child of Nicolas (Petrograd), Magali (Marcy), Scott (Fusion Bomb) and Miguel (Fusion Bomb). Conceived by members of Luxembourg’s varied music scenes at the dawn of the COVID-19 epidemic, Beyond Me, in many ways, still bathes in amniotic fluid. Just one thing is certain: it’s going to be one bad baby. It can play the guitar, the bass, and the piano. It can sing, it can rap, and it can play the shit out the drums.

In keeping with previous editions, Kaleido has invited two internationally renowned comedians, Zoe Brownstone and Zuva Martens, to the stage together with one of their own, Kaleido-regular Sjoerd Janssen. Jacob Adriana will be the MC. Time to get those laughing muscles aching!

Nightscapes ProductionsNightscapes Productions will turn the festival area into a spherical stage with its theatrical scenography and scenography. It leaves traces of magic, surprising and always crossing the border of your daily routine. This results into in situ created installations performances and theatrical sceneries with a special, sometimes alienating ambiance.

Nightscapes Productions has literally made a virtue of necessity. Their material choice is characterized by availability and the consumption behaviour of our society. Through recycling and upcycling the “waste of our society”, it gains a new life and meaning in the surrealistic art installations. Not only does it make our world a little lighter, “old stuff” also challenges creativity and often already has its own story to be told. Small turns into tall, special into ordinary.

Central locationEverything takes place in the grounds and buildings of the Tapijn Barracks in the city park of Maastricht. The areas around the large stages have been cordoned off. Reservations for the performances on these stages, the programme in the buildings and the activities in the Tapijn Garden are necessary. Around the buildings, there are some smaller theatre projects and tents that can be visited individually or in small groups. Remember to keep your distance.

• Voor het publiek is er geen overkapping bij het hoofdpodium. Andere plekken zijn overkapt of binnen. Neem bij slecht weer uw paraplu mee. Regenponcho’s zijn in beperkte mate beschikbaar.

• In dit deel van de binnenstad is parkeren maar beperkt mogelijk. De informatieborden van het parkeer-route-info-systeem van de gemeente Maastricht geven aan waar die avond nog parkeergelegenheid is.

• Op het terrein zijn fietsenrekken op de verharde plaatsen van het terrein. Plaats fietsen op de daarvoor aangegeven plaatsen en niet in het park.

• All the UM buildings are accessible with wheelchairs, but do take into account that it will take a little longer to get from one place to another in the buildings. Outside most activities are on grass.

• There is no canopy for the public at the main stage. Other places are covered or indoors. In the event of bad weather, bring your umbrella. A limited number of rain ponchos are available.

• It is extremely difficult to park in this part of the city centre. The road signs of Maastricht City Council’s parking information system indicate where parking capacity is available at that time.

• There are bicycle racks on the paved areas of the site. Place bicycles in the designated areas and not in the park.

DrankHet is goed toeven in het park waar onder het genot van een goed getapt glas bier, frisdrank of wijn genoten kan worden van muziek en straat-theater.

De bars bevinden zich bij het hoofdpodium en aan de parkzijde. De drankverkoop bij het hoofd-podium is in handen van leden van Harmonie Sint Pieter 1890 en drankverkoop aan de park-zijde wordt verzorgd door Eurest Catering.Bier en fris: €2,50 / wijn: €3,75.

Muntverkoop (alleen met pin) bij het centrale informatie-punt aan de parkzijde en bij de bar van het hoofdpodium.

Eten Er is geen eten voorzien op het terrein van het festival. Het staat iedereen vrij zelf eten mee te brengen. Er zijn voldoende pauzes in het programma om in de nabijheid van het stadspark richting het Onze Lieve Vrouwenplein een terras op te zoeken of iets te eten te halen. Op het ter-rein van de Tapijnkazerne kan er ook gegeten worden bij Brasserie Tapijn.

There are two bars: one near the main stage and one on the park side. The sales and staffing of the bar at the main stage is taken care off by Harmonie Sint Pieter 1890; Eurest Catering will provide the bar at the park side.Beer and soft drinks: €2,50 / wine: €3,75

Coins for sale (cards only) at the central information stand at the park side and at the main stage bar.

FoodFood is not provided on the festival terrain. You are welcome to bring your own food. There is a sufficient amount of breaks during the acti-vities to fetch some food in the city park area or head in the direction of the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Square for one of the terraces. Brasserie Tapijn, located at the Tapijn Barracks, also offers lunch and dinner options.
