POST-SUKKOT CARNIVAL Despite less than perfect weather, we had a wonderful turnout at our post-Sukkot Carnival. Thank you to all the parent volunteers, to everyone who bought tickets in advance or at the door and to the many participants who helped to make this a suc- cessful fundraiser. APPLE PICKING AT DR. DAVIE’S FARM Our Early Childhood children, along with their teachers Dorit Niven, Gloria Aris, and Rachel Gissinger, visited Dr. Davie’s Farm in Congers, NY for a beautiful day of apple picking. After spending time in the orchard, the children enjoyed a picnic and games on the lawn. Thank you to all the parents who accompanied us on the trip! Each class put their apples to good use with cake-baking, apple cider-making, applesauce-making and lots of sampling. SUKKOT CELEBRATIONS All of our students enjoyed their various Sukkot celebrations at school, and children had the opportunity to decorate and eating in the sukkah. Box Tops for Education Kinneret participates in the General Mills’ Box Tops for Education program. You can find Box tops (little pink coupons) on cereal boxes, candy, cookies, paper towels, and so many more items. Clip them and send them into school with your child. Kinneret gets 10 cents for every box top you collect! Please have your child deposit the box tops you clip in the designated box outside the school office. Dear Families, Welcome to 2013-2014’s first issue of the Torch, Kinneret’s e-newsletter. Distributed seasonally, our newsletter keeps you up to date with exciting happenings around the school, shares photographs, and provides you with a view of your own and other chil- dren’s classes and activities. I hope you all had restorative and meaningful holidays and that your child has en- joyed the first weeks of school. Now that we are meeting regularly again, after an unusually early holiday season, we are excited to be getting into a routine of learning, growing, and having fun together. We are pleased this year to have developed new technology and extracurricular pro- gramming, and we feel confident that both of these efforts serve to build on our solid foundation of educational excellence while keeping Kinneret moving forward. We have just unveiled our new web-based school management system called Ren- Web. All parents should have received an email with registration information for Ren- Web and have logged on to see your child’s progress, check homework assignments, and see any posted messages from your child’s teachers. If you are having any trouble logging onto RenWeb or did not receive the email about it, please contact Aliza Klein, our new technology consultant. She can be reached at [email protected]. As a special service to our students, we now provide an outstanding after-school program, run in conjunction with the Riverdale Y, offering classes in Lego robotics, bas- ketball, chess, and choir, along with homework help. Forms were distributed and the programs have already begun, but it’s not too late to join. Contact the school office if you would like to sign your children up for these fun and educational extracurricular events. Finally, please join me in welcoming a number of outstanding new staff members to our school: Amira Booth-Soifer – Assistant Teacher Jenna Bottiglieri – 1st Grade English Teacher Rachel Furr – Assistant Teacher Yocheved Ginsberg – Assistant Teacher Kayla Keesler – Assistant Teacher Esty Navon – 8th Grade Hebrew Teacher Aliza Klein – Technology Consultant With best wishes for a productive and enjoyable school year, Asher Abramovitz, Principal PLEASE OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL RULES CONCERNING BIRTHDAY PARTIES FOR KINNERET STUDENTS: Parties may not be held on Shabbat or Yom Tov. All food served at parties must be marked kosher or come from an establishment with a recognized kosher certification. This includes items sent home in goody bags. Because Kinneret serves a wide range of families with diverse practices, and be- cause it is a school that values and honors Jewish traditions, we require that all par- ties adhere strictly to these guidelines. Regardless of your own practices within your home, please be respectful of our school and your children’s classmates. If you have questions about Shabbat, yom tov, or kashrut, Mr. Abramovitz will be happy to answer them for you. KINNERET NEEDS YOU! Can you spend a few hours a month to help Kinneret? There are many events during the school year that depend on volunteer help. Relying on volunteers helps to keep our costs low and also offers parents a great opportunity to meet one another and contribute to our children’s positive experiences at school. Some of the programs for which we need volunteers are: The Lunch Program, which needs parents to organize and serve meals any day Monday through Thursday. The November Scholastic Book Fair requires parent’s help for set up and to help children select books. The Annual Auction Benefit in February needs organizers and workers. The Mishloach Manot Purim bags must be prepared and distributed. The library would benefit from parents helping to re-shelve books. Our annual Spring Journal needs parents to solicit ads and prepare the final product. Please reach out to Amy Hibshoosh at [email protected] if you can give any amount of your time.
