Welcome Back, Jeff!

As most of you know, our Rector has been leading a Celtic Christianity pilgrimage with Dr. Les Fairfield, retired Church History professor at Trinity Seminary, and will be traveling with nearly a hundred other people. These teaching trips were a hallmark of his ministry in Beaufort. Perhaps a similar trip will be on the horizon for the people of St. Philip’s! Jeff and his family will be back in Charleston in mid-July to move into the Rectory at 92 Church Street. We joyfully welcome them back!

Welcome Andrew O’Dell

and family! Our new Assistant to the Rector, Andrew O’Dell, and his family will be moving to Charleston in mid-July to serve here at St. Philip’s. We are happy to welcome them to Charleston and to our parish. Andrew’s first official Sunday will be July 24 and he will be in the office on July 19.

of Andrew and his family….

Photos from Jeff’s Trip

To refresh your memory here is a brief bio of Andrew and his family: Andrew, Ellen, Lily (13) and Andrew (11) are coming to St. Philip’s from Beaufort, where Andrew served as Jeff’s Senior Associate. Before moving to Beaufort, the O’Dells lived in Darlington, S.C., where Andrew served as Rector of St. Matthew’s Church for seven years. Andrew grew up in Mt. Pleasant, attended Porter-Gaud School and is a graduate of Davidson College, where he received a bache-lor of science in physics. After graduating from Davidson, he taught computer science at Porter-Gaud School, where he and Ellen first met. Shortly after they were married, Ellen and Andrew moved to Sewanee, Tenn., where An-drew attended the School of Theology of The University of the South. In his free time, Andrew loves running, playing guitar, working in the yard and enjoying the outdoors with his family. Ellen was born in Newton, Mass., and at age five moved to Falmouth, Mass. She attended Ithaca College, later transferring to UMass, Amherst, where she received a bachelor’s degree in plant and soil science. In May 2014, she graduated from Francis Marion University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and currently works in the office of Dr. Lucius Laffitte in Beaufort. Ellen loves gar-dening, sewing, baking and reading a good book. Lily is an avid singer, and both she and Andrew (the younger) love to read, ride bicycles, act, run and swim.

Youth Group

supports

Water Mission

Dear St. Philippians, I want to let you know about the heart of generosity that our youth group has for the poor of the world. We have a two liter soda bottle that we cut in half. On the top we wrote “The Chalice of Change” and we pass it around after our opening prayers at youth group every meeting. Once the chalice has been passed around the last person comes forward and pours the change into the bot-tom of the bottle. The old two liter is a symbol of what many people in developing countries use to collect con-taminated water. I have a slide of two cups of water that I put on the screen. One cup is brown and full of every foul disease and one cup is pure and clear. We created a program called “Loose Change For Liv-ing Water.” I do short talks throughout the year about the power of what Water Mission does for the world. I have challenged them to bring in all the spare change they can find. If they buy something with bills I encourage them to put the spare change in a bag and write LC4LW on it and bring it to youth group the next week. We had a generous giver who asked for birthday money just to give to the fund! We had a girl in Jr. High who dropped over a hun-dred dollars in the chalice one night! The high schoolers and middle schoolers challenged each other to a giving duel. The high schoolers edged them out, but the end result was that the combined total was over $1,800.00. Combined with last years donation they have raised $ 3,225.00!!! May we all be inspired by the heart of generosity that these young people have displayed, and as St. Paul says, " Let every man give according to his heart, so let him give;

not begrudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians. 9:7 In Christ, David Gilbert Youth Pastor
