Colle at tip and frog *Everything that sounds good initiates from large muscles of the back. Relaxed small muscles move as a response. Imitate the articulation and ring of a pizzicato or a handbell At frog: Fist, thumb under, regular bow hold at frog (open strings) Relax knees, hips, shoulders and exhale before each note At tip: Upside down bow and regular bow hold at tip (open strings)

Scooping ice cream motion, exhale and then play, say “ugh” or “ta” silent wiggle for proper weight and straight bow, flat hair

Goal: Clear, ringing “ta” sound that starts from the string Kreutzer #7 excerpt alternating tip and frog. Try this starting down and starting up-bow:

Martele bow division exercise – Clear, ringing “ta” sound for each note Bow starts and stops on the string – do not lift! Stop at the frog and tap thumb, and stop at the middle of the bow to tap pointer, huggers, pinky. Use a sticker or mentally mark the middle of the bow and divide as follows: 1 + 1 2 + 2 3 + 3 4 + 4 6 + 6 Check in at each third and tap pointer, huggers, and pinky 1 + 1 + 1 8 + 8 + 8 After mastering open strings, use this bow division exercise on a three-octave scale acceleration drill with 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 notes per bow (no metronome for this one).
