DESCRIPTION

Play for children is key to their development, it helps them understand the world and get their bearings with their surroundings, as well as helping them to develop psychologically. As we grow older, we lose our sense of play. We are told totake a ‘grown up’ approach, to stop ‘playing around’.Currently we are experiencing large amount of interest into the significance of ‘The State of Play’ in adults. How it may be integral to the evolution of the human mind, how this state of play may be key to elevating ideas and processes. This manifesto outlines an approach to play that will hopefully serve as a precursor for future developments in this time of economical adversity.

“To stimulate creativity one must develop childlike inclination for play and the childlike desire for recognition.” – Albert Einstein

RISK:

Don’t be afraid of your peers.

We find ourselves too often in fear of the judgement of our peers, we need the freedom to play in our work and feel free to take risks.

TRUST:

Providing a trusting environment conducive to play.

Friendship is a short cut to play.We will work with friends and create anenvironment that is supportive to the open minded attitude designers need to enable play.

QUANTITY:

Turn off your internal editors and go for quantity.

Reject the desire to be original, create as much as we can in search of a solution. We need to go for it and create lots of ideas, even if they don’t seem that different from each other.

EXPLORE:

Explore & Experiment.

We will not limit ourselves to any particular media, looking around us to find things to work with. If a child builds a tower out of toy building blocks, the child will not be afraid to break it down and rebuild it.

BUILD:

Build prototypes – think with your hands.

We can use our hands to quickly pushan idea into the real world. Quite complex ideas can spring into life, and allow a better understanding through sight and touch without having to rely on words.

EMPATHY:

Role Play - Insight to experience

Empathy is a powerful tool we use to uncover a solution through firsthand experience. Acting things out and putting ourselves into the problem we are trying to solve. Like a child playing out the role of a fireman.

RULES

Play is not anarchy – it has cooperative rules.

Rules are vital, especially when group play is involved. A set of rules is required not only on how to play but when we should use a playful approach.

ALTERNATE

Alternate between divergent and convergent modes.

Using play to generate creative ideas then coming together and focusing to generate solutions and develop them. States of play and states of seriousness are not absolute. We can be serious and play and it is important to know when to switch between them.
