The essentials of a winter use shelter are incorporated in this building—large warming room, food concession, and toilet facilities. In a shelter projected for skaters' use, a runway or ramp from the shelter level to the ice surface is usually preferred to the steps provided in this instance. Simple form and low cost materials have produced results altogether pleasing. The raw cut in the rear of the structure to be seen in the photograph cries out for remolding and a naturalizing treatment.

Although actually constructed on a university campus, here is a building both function and character of which are suitable to some of our northern parks. In the main given over to toboggan storage, small lounge space and repair shop
are also incorporated. An outside stairway leads up to the slide which can be seen in the rear of the building. The combination of several materials gives interesting informality. J. Lakin Baldridge was the architect.

A large shelter so located in a metropolitan recreational area that it offers year-round use. On the hill back of it are a low ski-jump structure, a low toboggan-slide structure, and a number of earthen-sled slides. Its terrace overlooks a broad playfield,

which in winter serves as runway for the various slides and is flooded in part for skating. In summer the playfield accommodates baseball diamonds. Thus the building serves as warming-shelter in winter and picnic shelter in summer.

Ski Lodge, Badger Pass, Tosemite National Park
The lay-out shown on the facing page indicates that this lodge specifically serves skiers and onlookers, and that it has no other-seasonal use. Note the lengthy floor heater in the room through which guests arriving and skiers returning from the ski slopes enter to seek the comfort of the lounge and the refreshment of the cafeteria. Note also the ski room with rental and checking space and the broad terrace from which the sports activities may be viewed.
The illustration above shows the facade and terrace facing the sports arena in actual winter use. At the right will be seen a view of the lounge with its highly original fireplace treatment utilizing" skier motifs as ornament for the metal hood.

WINTER SPORTS FACILITIES, COOK COUNTY FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT, ILLINOIS
This and the facing page show a winter sports development in the Chicago metropolitan area. The photographs illustrate facilities as these existed until recently. The drawings indicate an enlargement now under way to meet an overtaxing demand for winter sports recreation.
It will be observed that three wooden toboggan slides will be expanded to six, and that an overhead tower for controlling the take-off of toboggans
will be added. The drop gates indicated are largely conjectural in detail inasmuch as their final method of operation must be determined by cut-and-fit experimentation on a single gate to assure positive, practical results.
The broad steps leading up to the start of the toboggan slides may be seen in the illustrations. One view shows the relationship of a ski-jump structure to the slides.

Mule Shelter, Grand Canyon National Park
Shelter, water supply, feed storage, and corral for the pack animals are necessary provisions at the end of the long and difficult trail down into this
deep canyon. Boulders are the structural material at hand, which fact, more than the resulting character of the masonry, is justifying of their use.

Mule Shelter, Grand Canyon National Park
Another trailside shelter and corral for mules on the floor of this vast canyon. The rock walls here have more form than the boulder masonry of the opposite example, and the thatch-effect roof seems in better character with the country than a flat shingle roof.

Riding Stable, Brown County State Park, Indiana
Here is a riding stable only to be challenged for being more than a shade on the palatial side. There is no questioning its excellence and completeness of plan and attractiveness of exterior.

The stairs lead up to men's locker room, shower and toilet facilities, and stableman's quarters over the lounge, tack room, and women's retiring room equipped with shower and toilet facilities.
