    PlantingSeedlingsSeedlingsshouldbetransplantedinthelatewinterorearlyspringbefore

    extensiverootdevelopmentoccurs.Theholdshouldbetwiceaswideasthe

    container.Wetthoroughlyandcarefullyremovetheroomball.Prunetheroots

    toallowthemtogointheholdwithoutbending,(prunethesameamountof

    foliageaftertransplanting).Settherootballintheholewiththecrownatthe

    levelofthesoilsurface.Fillwithsoil,tamp,andsoak.

    CareofGrowingSeedlingsAcorns

    are

    an

    important

    food

    source

    for

    many

    types

    of

    animals

    soexpectsomecompetition.Seedlingswillbenibbledon.Ifthisisaconcernyou

    maywanttotakesomeprotectivemeasures.Therearenumeroustypesoftree

    sheltersandscreensthatcanprotecttheseedlingsfromhungryanimalsabove

    andbelowground.

    Nearbyvegetationcancompeteforsoilmoisturetothedetrimentof

    yourseedling.Youcanavoidthatbyremovingvegetationina2footradius

    aroundtheplants.Mulch,includinghay,bark,ships,orblackplastic,willhelp

    conservemoistureandeliminatecompetitors.

    Irrigationisoptionaldependingonwhenyourseedlingswereplanted

    andtheweather.Twoorthreedeepsummerwatering(34gallonsper

    seedling)eachyearforthefirstfewyearscanhelpyourseedlingsurvive.After

    thatit

    should

    be

    able

    to

    withstand

    the

    dry

    summer

    conditions

    on

    its

    own.

    Bewarethatnotallyourplantswillsurvive.Evenwithprotectionandirrigationa60to70percentsurvivalisconsideredgood.
