LHC-YETS 2017-18
• Several options have been studies, to define a baseline for a standard Year End Technical Stop
Standard YETS baseline
• The CV maintenance needs 9 wks for the standard maintenance during the YETS
• only 2 Technical stops in 2017
• reduced maintenance during the YETS 2015-2016 (LS1 completion in 2015, and 3 TS)
• TE-CRG needs 2wks for pumping, boil off and cryotuning, following the CV maintenance
• The duration of ELQA, UPS tests, powering tests and machine checkout is confirmed to 2 wks
• The LHC Machine will be emptied of Liquid Helium (20 K) before the Christmas closure12 days are needed BEFORE the Christmas closure
• UPS tests and a complete ELQA campaign on 13kA are included in the baseline
LHC coordination meeting, 30th May 2017Marzia Bernardini EN-ACE 7
Critical path:
• 9 wks of CV maintenance
(start in parallel with cryo
empty of 2 wks)
• 2 wks Christmas closure
• Standard Cryogenics
maintenance – 6wks
(in the shadow of CV
maintenance)
• 2 wks cryo reconditioning

LHC-YETS 2017-18
• The duration of the YETS 2017-2018 for the LHC was validated by LMC to 15 wks beam to beam
• 1 additional week (wrt v. 3.0) is therefore available for the Injectors, and it is dedicated to HWC
• In agreement with BE-OP and EN-ACE, the commissioning duration has been extended in the injectors from 3 wks to 5 wks
• There is no impact on the machine access period for the SPS, where the YETS activity on the critical path is located
• The “Length of YETS 2015-2016 / EYETS 2016-2017 / YETS 2017-2018” document is under approval
Open Points
• Radiological aspects related to CMS activities during YETS• CMS would appreciate a few days low lumi work before beam stop which acts as cooling time;
5 days would be fine, even 3 would help a lot …
• If CMS is forced to launch the yoke opening the day p-p high lumi running stops, that would expose people (not just CMS but also EN-HE and TE-VSC people) to about 5 times the dose-rate so far learned to deal with.
• Warm up of the inner triplets of LSS5 for CMS alignement at warm
• Optimisation of the beam commissioning period

Personnel safety exit (UPR) - Meeting on 10/04 with HSE and FB
• Proposal of a temporary configuration (3 manholes 1mx1m)
in order to not impact forward detector cabling and other
services
• Not well received by HSE and FB main issue is the rescue
of injured persons via the manholes.
New proposals under study:
• Excavation of doors (final configuration) from the LHC side at
the beginning of LS2 to give time for de-cabling, re-cabling,
commissioning of services (including FW detectors) and
repairing of possible tunnel damages:
Construction via a separate contract
Bigger impact on LS2 schedule and LHC machine (dust,
transport, access, passage restriction, hardware removal)
Not the favorite proposal for SMB
The cables and services rerouting (including FW
detectors) in the LHC tunnel could be anticipated to YETS
2017-2018
• Excavation of larger apertures (1.7mx1m) from the HL-LHC
side at the end of LS2. (see next slide)

HL-LHC-LS2, updates on WP17
Marzia Bernardini EN-ACE 25
• Larger “reduced apertures” (1.7 m x 1 m) could be accepted by HSE and FB as a temporary
measure
• 50 to 60 cm of margin are existing between the excavated apertures and the critical services:
SMB and the 2 consultants are assessing the feasibility and the corresponding risk.

LS2: global overview
Concerns and Open Points for LS2
• HL-LHC
• Presently the dates and the scope of the civil engineering works in the LHC machine are not defined. This could
impact the activities to be performed during the YETS 2017-2018 for cables and services rerouting
• All the activities generating dusts must be performed when the IC are closed
• The activities in preparation of LS3 should no be slowed down by the dipole diodes consolidation (impact on the
critical path of LS3)
• The strategy for the lift replacement should be re-validated following the lesson learnt during the EYETS
2016-2017
• The date of the PZ33 lift replacement should be reviewed, to cope with the dipole diodes consolidation
• The magnets to be replaced during LS2 must be defined: this could impact the workload of the special
intervention team in charge of the NC
• The replacement of the Inner Triplets in LSS1R during the LS2 should be studied
(reduced performances of the orbit correctors in R1, following the EYETS 2016-2017)
• The impact of the diodes consolidation on the HWC should be defined
• The coordination of the overall surface logistic, for all the machines and experimental areas should be
centralised (transport, storage areas, surface facilities, …)
Reminders
• The readiness of the equipment for the installation, is under the responsibility of each Group
• The worksite activity management will be performed directly by the Groups for their activities
(as during YETS and EYETS)

LHC coordination meeting, 30th May 2017
• The duration of the YETS 2017-2018 is now validated to 15 wks
• The preparation of the LS2 already started
• The Plan version 2 shall be completed by June 2017, to reflect the LS2 activities
• The activities of HL-LHC are well identified, but the detailed schedule and sequencing of their implementation should be defined in 2017
• Dipole diodes consolidation
• The activities related to the dipole diodes consolidations fit in the LS2 schedule
• The duration of the complete diode consolidation is 51 wks, including the Xmas closure.3 wks are available at the beginning of the project for learning.Additional time (about 2.5 months) will be available for non conformities resolution, if needed
• The project organization should be similar to that implemented during LS1 for splices consolidation (SMACC)
• The first draft of the LHC-LS2 schedule, identifying the critical path, could be issued in Q1-’18
• The approval process of the main changes will start in 2017 and must be completed by Q1-’18
• 2017 will be a challenging year, due to the parallel preparation of technical stops, YETS 2017-2018 and LS2!
• The main concern is related to the resources availability during the LS2, to prepare and to not compromise the LHC activities for LS3
