Wild Kratts Alaska: Hero’s JourneyPREMIERES MONDAY, JULY 24
A Message from Greg GicziPresident and GM, WNIT Public Television
Hello Everyone!
A big “thank you” goes out to the 324 (you know who you are!) members who participated in the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County’s Give Local Day. WNIT accounted for $98,715 in gifts before the matching funds were applied. Of that amount, 75 percent will come back to WNIT for operations, with the remaining 25 percent and the entire match going into WNIT’s endowment account. Many thanks to all who gave and to those major donors who provided the $2.4 million in matching funds to the foundation.
I’m going to spare you most of the puns that work with our upcoming Independence Day holiday, but I will say we have some “bang-up” programming coming your way! While I’m sure your neighbor’s personal fireworks display will be impressive, it will not come close to the ones you will see on PBS’s A Capitol Fourth, airing July 4 (of course) at 8pm with a repeat at 9:30pm.
Two of Michiana’s charming communities will be featured in upcoming local specials. Our Town: Buchanan airs Monday, July 17 at 8pm and 9:30pm. Then, on Monday, August 28 we will feature Our Town: Syracuse. The “Our Town” series, which WNIT produces, is one of our most popular local programs. Watch, learn something new, and visit these wonderful small towns.
Two upcoming programs have really caught my eye to recommend to you. Wild Alaska Live begins Sunday, July 23 at 8pm, and Ireland’s Wild Coast, beginning Wednesday, August 2 at 8pm, are going to create a lot of interest. They are beautifully photographed – perfect for the wide-screen television in your living room. I think I need a bigger TV to capture all that beauty!
WNIT had a great Give Local day, we have some terrific local programs coming up, and there’s all that amazing programming from PBS. Yet, I feel there is a dark cloud over my head. It’s that uncertainty of future funding from the federal government that is looming and putting plans on hold. In large size markets, federal dollars make up a much smaller amount of total revenue and their loss is more easily managed. However, a loss of those federal dollars in smaller markets, like ours, is devastating. Federal support makes up 20 percent of WNIT’s budget. You can’t make that up without severely impacting our programming.
You can help in a couple of ways. First, let our federal elected officials know your opinion. Go to www.protectmypublicmedia.org to be part of the national effort. And, you can encourage a friend to become a member. If we double our membership we can insulate ourselves from the loss of federal funds.
Enjoy our two hottest months of the summer. The great programming on WNIT – PBS Michiana is always a great retreat from the heat.
Best wishes,
Greg Giczi President & General Manager

Our Town: Buchanan & Our Town: SyracuseBuchanan, also known as “Redbud City,” is located in southwestern Michigan. It is a traditional Midwestern small town with a thriving downtown and tree-lined streets. WNIT returns with its popular Our Town series in a look at Buchanan, where “Life is Better Here.” Our Town: Buchanan will showcase the special aspects of this community told through people who live and work in Buchanan.
Syracuse is a beautiful resort town located between the cities of South Bend and Fort Wayne in Indiana. The Syracuse/Wawasee area is home to the largest natural lake in Indiana as well as other lakes such as Syracuse Lake. Our Town: Syracuse will take you on an exclusive tour to see some of the best parks, fine restaurants, golf courses and wonderful lakes in the Michiana area!
There are many documentaries of this genre that are done by chamber offices and visitors bureaus from the local regions that focus on the beauty of their area. However, what sets the Our Town series apart from these documentaries is that these stories are videotaped and told through the eyes of the people who live and work in the towns. Our Town: Buchanan and Our Town: Syracuse are a tapestry of stories that spotlight the towns and collectively present what makes these communities unique.
WNIT is proud to present its newest installments of the Our Town series, Our Town: Buchanan on Monday, July 18 at 8pm & 9:30pm, as well as, Our Town: Syracuse on Monday, August 28 at 8pm & 9:30pm on WNIT channel 34.1.
Wild Alaska LiveCapturing life and survival in the Alaskan wilderness in this not-to-be missed television event
PBS will air its latest venture into live, natural-history adventure programming with Wild Alaska Live, a three-part, multi-platform production on July 23, 26 and 30 at 8pm, as a part of its “Summer of Adventure” lineup. Over three nights, in partnership with the BBC, PBS turns the cameras on a must-see natural spectacle that plays out across the vast Alaskan wilderness, where some of the world’s most remarkable animals – bears, wolves, moose, orcas and eagles – gather by the thousands to take part in Alaska’s summer feast, an event never before captured live on television. Wild Alaska Live is hosted by Emmy Award®-winning zoologists, adventurers and brothers Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt, the creators, executive producers and stars of the hit PBS KIDS series Wild Kratts. Liz Bonnin and Steve Backshall, both of whom presented Big Blue Live, will join the Kratts as on-air correspondents. On the PBS KIDS 24/7 channel and live stream, Wild Alaska Live will air immediately after Wild Kratts one-hour specials, including Wild Kratts: Creatures of the Deep Sea (on July 23) and the all-new Wild Kratts Alaska: Hero’s Journey (on July 26 and 30).
What happens in the Alaskan wilderness in late July affects the animals’ survival and well-being for the remainder of the year. With some of largest areas of wilderness left on Earth, Alaska is the best place in the world to see the huge animals and top predators in all their glory. The three-night live presentation also explores the challenges of preserving America’s last frontier, as scientists, filmmakers, photographers and other experts gather there to tell some of the planet’s extraordinary wildlife stories.
Over three nights, Wild Alaska Live will visit several locations, including points near Juneau and the Tongass National Forest, where the team will look for black bears and bald eagles; the vast Kenai Fjords National Park, in search of orcas and humpback whales; and the wilderness of Katmai National Park, where brown bears and elusive wolves live and hunt. Wild Alaska Live will also introduce viewers to local experts who explore the relationship between Alaska’s First Peoples and the animals among whom they co-exist.

The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
Directors’ Circle
SupporterSpotlight
Dan and Laurie Balla have been Directors’ Circle members since 2011. They supported WNIT years before that with Laurie donating her award-winning artwork to the auction and by purchasing items from the auction fundraiser. Laurie grew up watching her favorites on WNIT (Sesame Street and Electric Company, to name a few). Her art career began when she first discovered Bob Ross on PBS and found success in painting along with him. Dan and Laurie’s love of travel is enhanced by Rick Steves’ wonderful show, and Laurie thoroughly enjoyed the Downton Abbey series and all of the fun activities that WNIT provided to support it, like the Directors’ Circle reception, The History Museum’s Dressing Downton exhibit and the first look showings at the Ruthmere mansion!
Dan is a CPA and director at Crowe Horwath in South Bend. Laurie owns her own business as a web designer and marketing specialist and is currently the reigning Mrs. Great Lakes International. She will go on to compete for the Mrs. International title in August in West Virginia. Her platform is “Transforming Women with the YWCA.” She loves to help women be their best at every stage of their lives.
Dan and Laurie reside in the beautiful Princess City of Mishawaka.
