A Message from Greg GicziPresident and GM, WNIT Public Television

Dear Supporters of Public Television:

I’m pumped up! I was able to attend the PBS annual meeting in May. It’s an opportunity for general managers from public television stations from all over the country to share ideas and learn about PBS’s upcoming plans. Unlike all the other television and cable networks, PBS is not a “network” but rather a programming cooperative owned by its member stations. Just like WNIT belongs to you, all of PBS belongs to you too!

Paula Kerger, president of PBS, recently celebrated a work anniversary, she is now the longest serving president in PBS’s history. She has done a terrific job leading our organization to redefine it in this world of hundreds of traditional television channels, plus thousands more on the internet. Audiences are taking advantage of new technology to view programs where and when they want them on a device of their choice. We are adapting to these viewer trends while staying true to our mission of inspiration and education.

One huge announcement made at the PBS annual meeting is the upcoming 25th Anniversary rebroadcast of Ken Burns’ Civil War. This film is being totally re-mastered in 4K (Ultra High Definition) technology. We’ll have lots of publicity to alert you to its broadcast when it is ready.

While there are so many new programs coming up next fall and winter, I don’t want to skip highlighting a few programs coming up in July and August. First Peoples (Wednesdays, June 24-July 8) shows how the mixing of prehistoric human genes led the way for our species to thrive around the globe. Last Tango in Halifax returns (Sundays, June 28-August 2), Capital Fourth is always a big hit (8pm and 9:30pm, July 4), and Michiana’s Rising Star returns in July and August for its third season of showcasing Michiana’s best talent.

Thank you to everyone who participated in St. Joseph County’s Day of Giving. Our county ranked third in the nation for overall giving! WNIT was a great beneficiary – your gifts were matched by the St. Joseph County Community Foundation to strengthen our endowment fund.

Enjoy your summer! Please know that your ongoing support of WNIT is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Greg Giczi President & General Manager

Big Blue Live coming to WNIT Scientists, filmmakers and photographers, animal behaviorists and other experts come together to document the extraordinary rejuvenation of the once endangered and now thriving ecosystem of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in California. Some of the world’s most charismatic marine creatures – humpback whales, blue whales, sea lions, dolphins, elephant seals, sea otters, great white sharks, shearwaters, and brown pelicans – convene in this once-a-year confluence. Viewers can watch one of nature’s great “reality shows” delivered through state-of-the-art filming technologies and live reports from air, sea, and below the waves. The multi-platform event will be anchored by four on-air correspondents from a reporting hub at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and from aboard NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Office of National Marine Sanctuaries’ research vessels.

Big Blue Live airs live over three nights, August 31-September 2 at 9pm on 34.1 and is rebroadcast at 11pm on 34.1.
