THE MARKETTHE SCHOOL LIBRARY MARKETSchool libraries serve students in the nation’s estimated 116,240 schools, including 85,530 traditional public schools, 4,480 public charter schools, and 26,230 private schools, also serving grades K-12. For stand-alone schools, selection will be at the building level, following a collection development plan that supports the curriculum and student recreational reading needs. In larger systems, there may be system-wide centralization. For the 90,000 public schools, the materials expenditures reported in the 2010-11 report was an average of $9,340 for the 81,200 schools with a library media center, or very roughly $750 million.

96,460 school libraries (as of 9/2015). Research shows the highest achieving students attend schools with well-staffed and well-funded libraries.

59,760 school librarians in the U.S.

48,700,000 students use school libraries

1.3 billion visits are made by students to school libraries during the school year, the same as attendance in movie theaters in 2011, or three times as many visits to national parks. School

1 billion is spent on school library materials for their children

$12.06 per student is spent by school libraries on library media—about two-thirds the cost of a single fiction title ($17.63) or about one-third the cost of a single non-fiction title ($27.04).

7,354 public library children’s librarians

2,481 public library young adult libraries.
