Mardon Archaeological Excavation. . As part of the Village Atlas Project we are having a dig from Thursday, 31st August to Saturday, 9th September at Mardon Farm by kind permission of Mr George Farr. We will be working under the direction of archaeologist Richard Carlton.

Using LIDAR maps we had hoped to find a prehistoric site in the Village Atlas area which was previously unknown but 250 years of intensive farming has meant that most have disappeared. This HER recorded site is described as a single ditched enclosure containing at least one hut circle. Under the supervision of David Astbury we did a geophysical survey of the field which contains a second interesting area.

This is an opportunity to try something different! If you have had an interest in archaeology and would like to have a go – this is your chance. You do not have to have any experience as training will be given. There is no need to bring any equipment as that can be provided. All you need is suitable clothing for all types of weather and boots or wellingtons. You can come every day, one day or as many days as you like. You need to book your dates by

contacting Maureen Charlton at: [email protected] or Heather Pentland at: [email protected] as soon as possible. If you have any questions please contact Maureen or Heather.

Other TillVAS dates to note: NB. There are no TillVAS talks in July or August.

On Sunday 3rd September TillVAS will have an exhibition at Etal Show.

Those were the daysAN EXTRAORDINARY AND UNSEEMLY SCENE occurred in the parish church of Crookham, Northumberland, on Sunday last. A proposal to raise the rents of the seats has been some time in agitation, and a few days ago each seat had the price to be paid in future affixed to it. This caused a great deal of dissatisfaction among the congregation, and many were determined not to pay at any higher rate than they had been doing.

Two of the managers waited on the clergyman on Sunday to advice with him about the proposal as to the increase of the pew rents, and a discussion took place in the vestry, which lasted so long that the congregation were kept waiting fully thirty-five minutes past the usual time of commencing the service, all the time wondering at the sounds of heated argument proceeding from the neighbouring chamber.

At length the clergyman made his appearance, and, after giving out the psalm and a short prayer, entered anew on the discussion which had been going on in the vestry about the seat rents. He thought the working people and farmers could easily afford to pay the advanced rents, and went into minute

calculations of the effect the increase would have on the monthly weekly, and daily disbursements of each seat-holder.

His calculations were stopped by a Mr. Greenfield, of Pallinsburn, who stood up and reminded the minister that these remarks would have been better made at the close of the service, and that the congregation did not desire to hear there arithmetical problems in domestic economy solved in the pulpit, and paid enough already for the little good they got from attending Crookham Church.

At this point Mr. Strutt, the collector of the seat rents, started to his feet, and objected to Mr. Greenfield abusing the minister, and hope he would hold his tongue. Mr. Greenfield retorted, and closed by proposing that the rents for the seats remain as at present. This met with a seconder in Mr. Patterson of Branxton, and, on being put to the congregation, which had been gradually dwindling down to small proportions, was on a show of hands, declared to be carried, and the meeting dispersed. – Scotsman.

Ford Bridge - Planned Works and Closure

The County Council Structures department has kept the Parish Council informed about their plans to refurbish Ford Bridge and recently sent an update:

In my previous email I stated that the works were starting on the 10th July 2017, this has changed slightly due to a delay in obtaining the stone. The works are now programmed to start on Monday 24th July. Everything else stated in my previous email remains unchanged.

On 18 May 2017 at 16:20, Joseph O'Connor, Engineering Assistant wrote:

We are currently planning to start works on the 10th July 2017 for 6 weeks. The works will involve repointing, masonry repair, repainting of the metal pattress plates and resurfacing the road. It is still planned to undertake the majority of the works during an overnight (9pm - 6am) road closure. Some works will be undertaken through the day, but the bridge will remain open for this.

On the Village Green 6.30pmIn St Cuthbert's Church 7.00pm

The Inter Scaldis Pipes and Drums Band is based in Vlissingen, The Netherlands. They were founded in

1984, as a living monument to the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, who liberated Walcheren,

Zeeland during WW2. They were the Dutch and Belgian Pipe Band Champions in 1984, and attend the Minden Day Parade in Berwick every year. We are delighted that they are coming to Norham again after that parade for our very own concert — they will be on the Village Green at 6.30 to give you a

taste of the main event, and then will perform in the church from 7.00 - a wonderful variety of tunes,

with some individual piping and drumming.
