Placemat using the pebbles fabric. Great for the bach. Bright pukeko fabric was used to make this funky placemat. For a traditional NZ placemat try kowhaiwhai or another maori designed fabric. For christmas with a difference try this batik with christmas tree motifs and use the gold holly batik for table napkins. For a Christmas green with a New Zealand touch why not use some of the green paua fabric. New Zealand kaka beak has a wonderful red blossom with green leaves. Great Christmas colours. Clean green New Zealand fabric is great for an overseas gift, a map of NZ is in the background with lots of NZ towns and cities and icons. I got slightly carried away making all these placemats, I just couldn’t limit myself to a few fabrics. The instructions are simple and you can literally whip up a set of six in a morning. Tie them with organza ribbon and hey presto, a beautifully wrapped New Zealand gift, made with love. Fabrics: 1.2m will make six placemats. You may like to purchase .6m of two fabrics and have reversable placemats. T emplate: Make yourself a template from thick cardboard (see directions on the next page) and use this to cut out your 12 fabric shapes and 6 batting pieces (I used cotton batting or you could use needlepunch). Sewing: With 2 placemats right sides together ,on top of one piece of batting, sew a ¼” seam all round the placemat leaving about a 5” gap at the bottom. Turn the placemat to the right side. Press the seam and slip stitch the opening closed. Top stitch about 2mm away from the edge round the placemat and then stitch another row about ¼” from the first row. Use your presser foot as a guide.
