Place Valueby

Mrs. Sherwood

Let’s think about what the position of the numeral means in a number, practice reading large numbers, write numbers in expanded notation (expanded form), and tell the place and the value of a numeral in any position in a number. Let’s get started!

Reading Large Numbers

When you see a large number to be read, start at the right hand side and think: ones, thousands, millions, billions. Then read the digits in each period and say the name of the period when you get to the comma. Try this one:

4,569,092,067

Let’s try a few more.

Expanded Notation

When using expanded notation, we write the value of each digit. For example, a 6 in the ten billion place is worth 60,000,000,000.Let’s try it with this number:4,590,432,721 = 4,000,000,000 + 500,000,000 + 90,000,000+ 400,000 +30,000 + 2,000 + 700 + 20 + 1.

Now you try!

Write these numbers in expanded form in yourbinder.

7,456,284,009 856,942,30477,098,341,119

Check your work!

7,456,284,009 = 7,000,000,000 + 400,000,000 + 50,000,000 + 6,000,000 + 200,000 + 80,000 + 4,000 + 9

Now you try!

Name the place and value of each red digit.405,237,694

The five is in the millions place and its value is 5,000,000.

35,897,479,502

The nine is in the ten millions place and its value is 90,000,000.
