Place and Time Navigator

● Comparison of datasets with spatial or temporal Information

● Widget functionality● Interactive selection and highlight of data● Easy creation of (or integration into) own websites

for data display● Easy loading of own data● Easy analysis of own data for research● Open Source● https://github.com/skruse/PLATIN

History of PLATIN

● Europeana4D developed within Europeana● GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH● STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for Fraunhofer IAIS● GeoTemCo developed by Stefan Jänicke at Image

and Signal Processing Department of the University of Leipzig

● PLATIN is a fork and extension of GeoTemCo● We thank their developers and funders!

Build upon Open Source

● Besides GeoTemCo PLATIN uses– jQuery / jQuery UI

– OpenLayers

– Flot

– Moment.js

– jsZip

– uCSV

● Also a big „Thank you!“ to these projects!

Base Widgets - Map

● clustering of „close“ data● Side-by-side comparison of datasets● Selection via shapes or even countries (on certain

maps)

Page 6: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

Base Widgets - Time

● Animation of a moving Time-Slice Selection● Data can be summarised by years/decades/centuries/ etc.

● More than just a „time slider“ - it contains distribution information and interacts with the other widgets!

● Scaling of values by logarithm

Page 7: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

Base Widgets - Table

● Sortable by columns● PLATIN extensions:

● Creation of new dataset by selection● Download of dataset● Full-Text search of table data

Page 8: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

PLATIN Widgets – Data Loading

● Easy loading of● CSV / KML files on a server● JSON data in browser storage (localStorage)● CSV / KML files on the local PC

Page 9: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

PLATIN Widgets – Map Overlays

● Overlay map with a layer from XYZ-shapes or a KML-file or a WMS-layer

Page 10: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

PLATIN Widgets - Piecharts

● Display of any column● Own categories possible (subsummation of values)

Page 11: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

PLATIN Widgets – Uncertain Time

● Rewrite of Time Widget to allow Time-Spans● This Spans can represent uncertainty

● Objects only add a fraction of their „weight“ to a time-slice they overlap

● So each object will only add it's own weight to the „integral“ of the complete graph

● Scaling by logarithm or percentage (of total sum)

Page 12: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

PLATIN Widgets – Uncertain TimeID begin end

1 0 300

2 175 225

● Fuzzy or „uncertain“ plot displays a kind of density function

● Values represent „expected value“ at this point in time

Page 13: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

PLATIN Widgets – Uncertain Time

● Time can also be displayed as a barchart, instead of the continuous graph

● Might allow easier data interpretation

Page 14: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

PLATIN Widgets – Line Overlay

● Visualisation of a relation (undirected or parent-child) of datasets

● Is also interactive with highlight and selection!

Page 15: Place and Time Navigator - Max Planck Society · History of PLATIN Europeana4D developed within Europeana GeoBrowser developed within DARIAH STIF developed by Stefan Jänicke for

PLATIN Widgets – Shape Coloring

● Coloring of a map in relation to distribution of data● Also interactive with highlight and selection!

Structure of the CSV files● Name

The name of the dataset shown in the table.● Address

The name of the location shown in the map.● Latitude/Longitude

WGS84 Coordinates● TimeSpan:begin● TimeSpan:end

Dating information shown in timeline● Any other column

Information shown in table
