before I began to develop our Hearth

& Home tobaccos, I sat down and worked up a theory as to how I was going to approach making the best blends that I could. My concept was to use a

four-pronged method to make tobaccos that would satisfy on all levels.

Taste- Th is is obviously the most important element in any pipe tobacco. To achieve the proper eff ect, it’s vital to know the characteristics of the varying components. Virginias deliver sweetness, citrus notes, bread-like fl avors and even liquor-like tones. Burleys can give nuttiness, earthiness and spice to a blend, depending upon the type. Orientals can be fl oral, musty and complex. Latakia creates a smoky fl avor. Perique has a fruitiness and spice. Processes, such as toasting, pressing and fl avoring can add to the palette of tastes that can allow for a broad variety. Using quality components, of course, is a key to producing an appealing mixture.

Aroma- Th is is a tricky area. For smokers of natural blends, how the tobacco smells is not all that important, but a blend that smells horrible will never work. When creating aromatics, the room note is almost as vital as the taste, but it’s possible to make a tobacco too sweet and cloying, so this is a tightrope.

Finish- Here’s where a number of otherwise stellar blends fall fl at. If a tobacco tastes great and has a pleasant aroma, but the aft ertaste reminds the smoker of old tires or a garbage dump, it won’t wind up as anyone’s favorite. I’ve had to adjust blends aft er achieving the fl avor I wanted because the fi nish was bitter, sour or just lingered

way too long. Knowing what tobaccos don’t hang on the palate and which ones have a pleasant fi nishing note becomes crucial.

Smoking Qualities- I’m sure that everyone has smoked a blend that tasted great but scorched the tongue. Obviously, this won’t do. What can be done about it? Using a larger cut of tobacco will slow down the burn. Some tobaccos, such as Latakia and Perique naturally have a cooler combustion temperature. Pressing a blend into a cake or fl ake allows the smoker to control the burn by leaving the chunks in thicker pieces. Th is becomes even more important with tobaccos like Virginias which can become ashy-tasting when smoked too hot.

Th ese are the things I looked at when I began to create the H&H tobaccos. Customer feedback has proven out that, for the most part, this theory works.

One thing rings true for all blenders and their creations- there is no such thing as a “universal blend”. For all the people who

love certain “classic” tobaccos, there will be another group that will think that they’re unacceptable. So, to achieve any level of success, a blender has to know when to shrug off

criticism and take it at face value. Th is is especially apparent when someone reviews a blend and starts with “Th is isn’t the kind of blend I normally smoke, but…”. While it’s important to listen to your customers, it’s just as critical to know when an opinion is a matter of personal preference.

Sometimes I use the SWAG method. SWAG stands for Scientific Wild-A** Guess. There are times when I know that I’m close to where I want to be, but I just can’t figure out what a blend needs to make it right. At that point, I may forget what I think is “right” and try something on a lark. More often than not, the new idea doesn’t work, but once in a while, it

comes up a winner. This was true with Classic Burley Kake. The burn was good, the aroma and finish worked well, but the flavor just didn’t come through. I had never tried pressing an aromatic before, but I was out of ideas. When the first batch came out of the press and we tried it, the blend just sang. All of the aromatic smokers I sampled it to loved it, and that guess proved to be a winner. I’m sure that I’m not the only person who took a stab in the dark and had it work, but it showed me that giving up is often the worst option.

And regardless of the quality of the tobaccos, the correctness of the concept and execution, some mixtures just don’t pan out. It’s an unfortunate fact that some good ideas won’t work. Someone far brighter than myself might be able to pull it off , but I know that there are times that it’s better to throw in the towel than to subject our customers to anything short of our best eff ort, and it’s not fair to our company as well.

I don’t claim to have all the answers, but our success in a relatively short period of time has proven to me that the Hearth & Home Concept works more oft en than not, and you, our loyal customers can count on the fact that we’ll only bring our best to market, and I thank you for your support, encouragement and your patronage. Th is is only the beginning of more quality blends for your enjoyment.

When I came to work for Habana Premium/Pipes and Cigars.com about 8 years ago, it was partially because I had a background in blending pipe

tobaccos. Aft er I had been with the company about 6 months, Scott Bendett, the owner, asked me to put together some blends to sample to our pipe club members. I came up with a half-dozen mixtures of varying types and we had the club members try them. Th ey were overwhelmingly enthusiastic about them, so we began selling them in the store. Th ey took off immediately, and Scott decided that we should put them on the website. Aft er some nice comments on the online forums, they became very popular almost overnight.

ser JacopoTh e Ser Jacopo factory is a little off the path usually taken by tourists, and in reality it's not a factory, which would make one think it's large, but a workshop. Th e current workshop is the same building where Giancarlo founded Mastro da Paja some thirty years ago. Th ey have made a few changes –a drying loft for the briar, extended the rear section a bit and added a high capacity vacuum system. Other than the years when Mastro moved out into the countryside, Giancarlo has done all his great pipe making and designing within these walls.

Ser Jacopo is Giancarlo's passion. Th e quality and style are completely unique in the world of pipes, and his passion for creating the fi nest pipes shows through in his phenomenal work.

Once upon a time there was an old wood carver called Geppetto. He had much imagination and a great

love for his work. One day a friend gave him a lovely old piece of wood knowing it would please the old wood carver. Geppetto took up this old block of wood, and decided to carve a marionette which would help him feel less lonely. He worked hard at the wood, and in the end created a marionette that came to life with the help of a little magic, becoming Gepetto's life-long companion.

robert lewis pipe TobaccoRobert Lewis, founded in 1787, is the longest established tobacco merchant in London and one of the oldest in the world. Christoper Lewis, a Welshman, originally started his retail tobacconist business at 14 Long Acre in Covent Garden. Robert Lewis, a relative of Christopher Lewis, later became the administrator of the fi rm. As the buiness fl ourished, the fi rm moved several times and fi nally located at 19 St. James's Street, where it is trading today. In 1997, Robert Lewis received a Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
