JOHN KEY + CO IMPRESSED WITH ENERGYWORKS “A thriving energy and resources sector in Taranaki provides export opportunities for innovators like Energyworks.” PM John Key stopped in while on the campaign trail for a look around the workshop, answering questions over afternoon tea with staff.

After admiring the array of projects in the Energyworks foyer the team was given a quick induction before heading into the office and on to the workshop. Stopping to chat to staff, John took a keen interest with the in’s and out’s of their jobs, hours worked, training involved in qualifying and the on-going training with-in the industry. Posing for photos and answering questions on taxes, self admittedly his favourite topic.

He was joined by Simon Bridges, Minister of Energy and Resources who answered questions relating to industry, health and safety legislation to a full canteen of staff.

The National team were keen to visit innovative Oil and Gas leaders with-in Taranaki and were joined by Jonathan Young, Local MP for the region. TVNZ film crews wrapped up the visit, filming in front of the Energyworks premises. ■

Mike, Ian, Allen and with the Deloitte Environmental Award

FIRST PLACE AT THE DELOITTE AWARDS 2014Energyworks were awarded first place in the Environmental Excellence section of the 2014 Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards ahead of tough competition from both Contact Energy and Genesis Energy. Boasting an impressive entry relating to ‘Environmental Leadership in Pipeline Construction’, Energyworks were acknowledged for a range of innovative environmental practices.

The Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards were held in Auckland on the 13th August to recognise achievement and excellence in the New Zealand energy sector. The event was attended at an executive level within the energy sector across the electricity, gas and petroleum disciplines. Over 640 guests attended the spectacular black-tie event at the Langham Hotel and Energyworks were represented by Allen Clarke, Ian McGrath and Mike Braggins.

Deloitte partner and energy sector leader Scott McClay congratulated all the winners in this year’s Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards.

“Deloitte is thrilled to again be associated with recognising the best and brightest in the energy sector, and the valuable contribution they make to New Zealand’s economy. The entries in this year’s awards were outstanding and clearly showed that innovation and striving for excellence continues to be well and truly alive in the sector.”

ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP IN PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION

The winning submission outlined the minimal environmental impact of two large scale pipeline projects; Contact Energy’s Ahuroa pipeline and Todd Energy’s Mangahewa Expansion Gathering and Exports pipelines.

Overview of the projects; The Contact Energy Ahuroa Pipeline involved the construction and installation of an 8.5km of 18 inch gas pipeline from the Stratford Power Station to the Ahuroa Gas Storage Facility. The pipeline was run inside existing pipeline easements, road reserve and new easements.

The Todd Energy Mangahewa Expansion Gathering and Exports Pipeline involved the construction and installation of new pipelines over 9km to carry well stream fluids between the Mckee and Mangahewa Production Station, via Mangahewa A & C and the proposed Mangahewa E well sites. These pipelines are a combination of 6, 8 and 12 inch and run across combination of undulating and medium to steep rural land.

What Sets Energyworks Apart;Energyworks is one of very few companies with the specialist expertise and equipment required to construct large scale cross-country pipelines in New Zealand. The submission outlined the care and planning taken with river crossings and the praise of subsequent reinstatement of the land.

“Comprehensive methodologies at more than twenty stream crossings and a high level of compliance from all Taranaki Regional Council site inspections.” Todd Energy Construction Manager - Mangahewa Pipeline.

Heli-Stringing was another influential factor in the submission. Energyworks employed the assistance of Beck Helicopters to string approximately

13,000m’s of pipe on the Todd Mangahewa Pipeline. Efficient hooking mechanisms and lifting techniques combined with familiarity and experience made heli-stringing more viable even in easily accessible areas. In addition to minimising the need for heavy vehicles to traverse sensitive environments, heli-stringing has a smaller carbon footprint than stringing by truck.

Horizontal Directional Drilling, the innovative trenchless technology is becoming an integral part of Energyworks’ pipeline construction projects. It reduces combustion emissions and the risk of discharge of oil or chemicals to land or surface waters, minimises the project footprint including right of way and reinstate areas, temporary facilities and access roads and also reduces disruption to the local population.

“Energyworks also makes extensive use of horizontal directional drilling technology, ensures minimal ground disturbance and rigorously manages traffic volumes at its sites.” Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Awards ■

HARD EARNED SUCCESS FOR EWL STAFFGlenn Ryan, QAQC, has been awarded his Welding Inspection certification by the Certification Board for Inspection Personnel NZ (CBIP). He can now carry out fabrication inspections in line with terms of our exemption under the Pressure Equipment, Cranes and Passenger Ropeways (PECPR) Regulations.

Jimi Webley has successfully completed his apprenticeship in Engineering - Fabrication Steel Construction through Competenz New Plymouth. This involves over 6000 man hours and 252 credits varied between correspondence and on-job assessments. ■

Mangahewa Wellsite Project

Work continues apace on the Wellsite Process Module package for Mangahewa E - Choke, Pig Launcher, Test Choke and Metering, Over Pressure Protection and Wellhead Sandcatcher Modules. Currently on target to deliver in advance of the original contract date with Mangahewa E site work expected to commence late August with a target completion of 31 October.

Fabrication of Modules for D and F site will commence mid and late September respectively. D site requires a Choke, Test Choke and Metering and Wellhead Sandcatcher Modules, F site requires a Choke, Pig Launcher, Test Choke and Metering, Over Pressure Protection and Wellhead Sandcatcher Modules.

Based on our recent successes on Mangahewa sites It is hoped we will be successful in winning the tender to compete site installation of the D and F Modules. ■

RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECTSTuakau Distribution Point

A new distribution point was built for Vector transmission within the compound of the existing Tuakau DP, Bollard road, Tuakau. The station has dual filters, single bath heater, dual metering streams and be connected to the existing metering hut and fed from the Kapuni gas line to Auckland.

Energywork’s scope of work covered the fabrication of pipe work, pipe supports, civil, fencing and mechanical installation. EW commenced fabrication early June and the scope of works was completed at the end of July. ■

CURRENT PROJECTSJemena - Queensland

Energyworks has been awarded the Jemena project which will kickoff in October and filter into the workshop soon after.

Jemena is an Australian infrastructure company that builds, owns and maintains a combination of major electricity, gas and water assets. As part of its asset portfolio, Jemena owns and operates two gas transmission pipelines, one of which is the Queensland Gas Pipeline (QGP). In recent times, industrial sectors have experienced growth and development in the regions surrounding the QGP which has resulted in an increased demand for gas. To maintain reliable gas supply based on the growth (and future predictions on requirements), Jemena is undertaking an expansion of the Queensland Gas Pipeline (QGP). The expansion consists of pipeline looping between Arcadia Valley MLV (KP208) and Rolleston Compressor Station (KP 243), approximately 35.4km, with a DN400 Class 600 pipeline and associated end of line facilities.

The work will be undertaken in two stages – Stage 1, which is scheduled to take place in September 2014 prior to, or in parallel with the commencement of pipeline construction, and Stage 2 which is scheduled to commence November and early December 2014. ■
