Pipeline Replacement Project
Why we need to replace the force main
Silicon Valley Clean Water
We have a Problem we need to Solve
• Our purpose for existing is to…– Protect Public Health– Protect the Environment
• We have an old, leaking pipe– Sewage into streets or bay– We have to do something– Doing nothing is not an option• From both a legal and ethical standpoint
The Problem we need to Solve
• Reinforced Concrete Pipe– Useful life = 50 years (insert ref)– Our pipe is 45 years old– Originally Designed for gravity flow (low pressure)– Currently Operating at 2.5 times design pressure– 64 leaks so far; rate of leaks increasing– Leaks are time-consuming and expensive to repair
Leak Repair
…from small disruption and impact
…to large
Pipe Repair Costs
• Each repair costs from $300,000 to $600,000• A small repair will take 3-5 weeks to complete• A large repair could take 3 weeks to several
months• So far we’ve had 64 of leaks at a cost of $xxx• Costs do not include potential regulatory, civil,
and even criminal penalties
Aging Infrastucture
• In the U.S., it is estimated that aging infrastructure will cost $xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx
• SVCW, alone, is replacing aging infrastructure at a cost of over $500 million
• In our immediate area other large projects– San Jose is spending $xx billion– San Francisco is spending $xx – Sunnyvale is spending $xx
Aging Infrastucture
• American Society of Civil Engineers give U.S. a grade of “C-/D check” for wastewater systems
