Act I: Nuremberg, Germany Scene I, The Party

It is Christmas Eve, and children are busy playing in the snow just outside the entrance to the Stahlbaum residence. Inside, the maid and butler are excitedly preparing for the arrival of guests to the Stahlbaum’s annual Christmas party. The family’s children Clara and Fritz appear, giggling at the maid and butler’s secret romance, as Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum prepare to greet their guests. The invitees soon arrive, as Clara’s mysterious Godfather Drosselmeyer trails not too far behind with a special Christmas gift for his cherished godchild.

Gifts are exchanged, and dancing ensues, before Drosselmeyer presents magical life-size dolls for everyone's entertainment. As the guests retire to dinner, Drosselmeyer asks Clara to stay behind and presents her with his special gift—a Nutcracker. He explains that the Nutcracker is actually a handsome prince, trapped by a curse from the evil Mouse King in order to prevent him from being with his true love, the Sugarplum Fairy. Clara dances with the Nutcracker until a jealous Fritz chases her and breaks it in half. Drosselmeyer magically mends the Nutcracker together and performs magic tricks for Clara and her friends. The children cause a ruckus, their parents dance, and finally the guests must all head home. Fritz and Clara go to sleep, the maid and butler bid each other goodnight, and Drosselmeyer prepares for a magical evening ahead. Scene II, The Battle

It is late in the evening, and a little mouse sneaks into the Stahlbaum residence, awakening Clara, who runs into the living room to find her Nutcracker by the Christmas tree. Soon after, the Mouse King appears, directing his entourage of large mice to taunt the Nutcracker and frighten the timid girl. Drosselmeyer enters and scares the mice away, before magically transforming the Nutcracker into life-size form, conjuring an enormous Christmas tree, and calling upon an army of soldier dolls to aid the Nutcracker. A cannon is shot, and the mice and soldiers begin to fight. The Mouse King and Nutcracker face each other, and just as the Mouse King nearly fells the Nutcracker, Clara hits him from behind with her slipper. Distracted, the Mouse King turns around, allowing the Nutcracker to slay him from behind with his sword. The mice mourn the death of the Mouse King, and Clara weeps over the Nutcracker, fearing he is also dead. Drosselmeyer creates a magical fog, and the Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince. Shy at first, Clara is charmed by the Prince, who guides her along with Drosselmeyer into the Enchanted Winter Forest. Scene III, The Enchanted Winter Forest

The Snow King and Queen dance with each other as Drosselmeyer gathers waltzing snowflakes in a whirling blizzard. Drosselmeyer escorts Clara and the Prince on a journey through the snow-covered trees toward the Palace of Sweets, where the Sugarplum Fairy awaits.

~ INTERMISSION ~ Act II: A Faraway Land Scene IV, The Clouds

Angels appear in the clouds, greeting Clara and the Prince as they make their journey through the nighttime sky toward the Palace of Sweets. Drosselmeyer appears and announces several guests from around the world to join in the upcoming celebration of the Nutcracker’s victory over the Mouse King.

Scene V, The Palace of Sweets

Drosselmeyer escorts Clara and the Prince to the Palace of Sweets, where the beautiful Sugarplum Fairy and her entourage await. Sweets are presented before a reenactment of the Prince’s battle with the Mouse King is staged for members of the Palace. The Sugarplum Fairy then welcomes each of the international guests and invites them to dance for Clara as a present for her help in saving the Prince. Dances from the different countries include:

After the various divertissements, the Prince and the Sugarplum Fairy reunite with a grand and romantic pas de deux, culminating in a grand finale with everyone who has been a part of Clara’s magical journey. Scene VII, Return to Home

Clara falls asleep in the arms of Drosselmeyer, who brings her back home. Clara awakes and sees a vision of her Prince, who leaves her with the Nutcracker. She gazes at the doll knowing that it will forever remind her of the adventurous, mysterious, and romantic Christmas experience that now resides in her heart.

PROGRAM NOTES By Joseph Morrissey

With its timeless music by composer Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker has remained a staple of dance repertoire in the United States, more so than in any other country in the world. Since the ballet’s 1892 premiere in St. Petersburg, Russia, ballet companies and schools have fashioned their own versions of the classic, which has developed into an American holiday tradition, performed annually at theaters all across the country. Ironically, the ballet was originally deemed a creative failure by critics, unable to ever survive as a stand-alone production--having premiered alongside Tchaikovsky’s one-act opera, Iolanta.

Imagine: critics writing in 1892 that Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker could not survive on its own, and here we are at Interlochen, 123 years later, performing a ballet that has become part of the fabric of U.S. dance institutions. Countless choreographers have changed the ballet’s scenario, from the sweet and conventional versions we expect to see to avant-garde interpretations, such as Mark Morris’ The Hard Nut. Across all of the choreographic departures since Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov's original, what remains at the heart of each production is Tchaikovsky’s score – a testament to what I believe is the ballet’s truest legacy.

Interlochen Center for the Arts recently received a generous gift from Drs. Elaine and Nick Mischler, allowing us to build a brand new set for this year’s production of The Nutcracker and beyond. Additionally, we are currently celebrating Tchaikovsky’s 175th birthday year. (He was born on May 7, 1840.) A special year like this one would not be possible without the ongoing pleasure of working with the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra under the baton of Conductor Dr. Matthew Schlomer. The dancers and musicians along with the production and wardrobe teams have been working hard to execute this newly choreographed version of the classic, which is tailor-made and inspired by each of their talents. In turn, I hope that everyone’s participation in this version of The Nutcracker will challenge and motivate them to carry on the legacy of Tchaikovsky’s legendary score.

JOHN BRAGLE is the conductor of the Interlochen Arts Academy Choir and Chamber Singers, instructor of voice, and is also the director of the World Youth Honors Choir and Festival Choir at Interlochen Arts Camp. Choirs under his direction have performed in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, DAR Constitution Hall in Washington D.C., Detroit’s Orchestra Hall, the Harris Theater in Chicago, and DeVos Hall in Grand Rapids. He is a cum laude graduate of Michigan State University with a bachelor degree in Music Education and also received a master's degree in Choral Conducting from MSU. Mr. Bragle has also served as Director of Choirs at Williamston Community Schools, visiting professor of music at Northwest Michigan College, director of the Michigan State University Youth Treble Ensemble and assistant director of the Michigan State University Men's Glee Club. His conducting studies have been with Charles Smith, David Rayl and Jonathan Reed, and voice studies with Richard Fracker and Robert Bracey.

CANDACE HUGHES is the costume shop coordinator and lead costume designer for the theatre and dance divisions of Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp, of which she is an alumna. She is a graduate of Western Michigan University, where she has served as a guest costume designer for the dance department. In the Washington, D.C. area, Ms. Hughes was an award winning costume and scenic designer for community theatre, and also designed costumes for regional opera in the metro area. She served as the costume shop supervisor for the Wolf Trap Opera company, was a part-time stitcher at Arena Stage, and had her own graphic design business.

JUSTIN KOERTGEN attended Interlochen Arts Academy from 1995-2000. Mr. Koertgen danced for the Dayton Ballet for twelve seasons. He has also danced with Ballet Fleming, Ballet Montana, The Michigan Dance Collective, Boca Ballet, and The Traverse City Dance Project. Highlights from his time with The Dayton Ballet include the roles of "Dracula" in Stuart Sebastian's Dracula, "Romeo" in Septime Webre's Romeo & Juliet, and the title role in Christopher Fleming's The Who's Tommy. He has worked as the ballet master and the rehearsal assistant for the Dayton Ballet and has taught for the company and school. Mr. Koertgen has taught all over the country including Huntsville Ballet, Mercyhurst University, City Center Ballet, and the Philadelphia Ballet School. His choreography has been featured at Mercyhurst University, the Dayton Ballet, The Michigan Dance Collective, and for the Traverse City Dance Project. Mr. Koertgen is happy to be home teaching the next generation of Interlochen students.

STEVE LARSON is an accompanist at Interlochen Arts Academy. He served as company pianist for the Milwaukee Ballet Company, has played for many other professional dance companies. He has composed music for several dance productions including Elsa, Milkmaid of Tangier (Milwaukee Ballet School), Stages, Camille and Song of Flight (Interlochen Dance Ensemble). In 2010, he was named a semi-finalist in the Dayton Ballet New Music/New Dance competition. His original music for use in the ballet studio appear on a number of CDs from Brio Recordings (www.briorecordings.com) and Aquarian Sound. Mr. Larson has appeared on radio broadcasts of “Live from Studio A” and “A Prairie Home Companion.”

MATTHEW LINDSTROM is originally from Lake View, New York. He is currently an instructor of dance and theatre for Interlochen Arts Academy and a dance instructor for Interlochen Arts Camp. He teaches modern dance and composition classes for dance majors and choreographs the theatre department’s mainstage productions. Before coming to Interlochen, he taught and choreographed at Colorado Mesa University, Cornell College, University of Northern Iowa, West Texas A&M University, Iowa Wesleyan College, Riverside Theatre Shakespeare Company, and for many other schools and companies. For eight years he served as dance captain for Stephen Foster the Musical in Bardstown, Kentucky. His choreography has been presented in Aspen, Boulder, Denver, throughout the Midwest, New York, Costa Rica and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Recently, he has appeared with both the Interlochen Shakespeare Company and in the full-length ballets of the Interlochen Dance Ensemble.

WENDY MASTERSON, a nationally recognized master teacher, choreographer and arts administrator, is an Infant Development & Somatic Movement Educator from the School for Body-Mind Centering®, a GYROTONIC® trainer and holds a M.F.A./B.F.A. in dance. She is currently director of program development for Body-Mind Centering/KLC and serves as treasurer on the international board of directors of BMCA. Ms. Masterson has presented movement sessions at the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science conferences in Washington, D.C., Seattle, and Basel and has published several articles on somatics in education. On the faculty of Interlochen Arts Academy since 1991 and as interim director in 2008-09, Ms. Masterson has initiated several cross-disciplinary courses including the Artist as Revolutionary campus-wide theme in 2003 and currently Learning, Expression & Artistry for upperclassmen.

EDWARD MORRIS has designed for Yale Repertory Theatre, Martha Graham Dance Company, Atlantic Theater Company, Lesser America, Princeton University, The New School, Gallery Players, Subjective Theatre Company, Allentown Shakespeare, Opera Memphis, Cherry Lane Theatre, University of Michigan, Muhlenberg College, Infinity Theatre Company, and Columbia University, among others. He is an adjunct assistant professor at Connecticut College and lecturer at The New School for Drama. Mr. Morris is a proud member of United Scenic Artists and Wingspace Theatrical Design. JANET MORRIS is an admission counselor at Interlochen Center for the Arts. This is her third Interlochen appearance as Mother Ginger. During her almost 30 years on staff at Interlochen, Ms. Morris has served in a variety of positions including hall counselor, camp office assistant, guidance counselor, and director of Intermediate Girls Division. She has helped facilitate the “snowflake” scene in previous Nutcracker performances but is excited to be a little closer to the ground in this production.

JOSEPH MORRISSEY is the Director of Dance at Interlochen Center for the Arts, having previously served as the Director of Artistic Planning and Touring for The Hong Kong Ballet. He has danced with the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich, Germany, the Boston Ballet and the Charleston Ballet Theatre. A graduate of The Harid Conservatory, Mr. Morrissey holds a Master of Arts in Performing Arts Administration from New York University in addition to a Bachelor of Science in Classical Ballet from The Jacob’s School of Music at Indiana University. He has twice been invited to choreograph for The Stuttgart Ballet’s Noverre Society in addition to being selected to participate in The New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of The New York City Ballet where he choreographed for students at The School of American Ballet. Mr. Morrissey has also presented his choreography with the Roberto Bolle and Stars of American Ballet Theater galas throughout Italy and Sicily in addition to choreographing for the Inside / Out performance series with The School of Ballet at Jacob’s Pillow. He has directed the Portland Ballet’s CORPS program for high school students pursuing careers and higher education in dance and has most recently completed a teaching and choreographic residency at The University of Akron. Mr. Morrissey is a member of the International Vaganova Method Society, having participated in the Vaganova Ballet Academy’s methodology seminar in St. Petersburg, Russia. Currently, he is a selected participant in the 2015 Dance / USA Institute for Leadership Training, a platform for emerging and notable leaders in the professional dance field sponsored by the American Express Foundation and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

ERIN C. PATRICK is pleased to be returning to Interlochen after Stage Managing Coppelia in 2012. She is a Western Massachusetts based artist working at Chester Theatre Company as the Production and Operations Manager and AEA Stage Manager (A Number, Arms on Fire, The Betrothed, Crime and Punishment). Other favorite credits include: Shakespeare Theatre Company (Measure for Measure), Signature Theatre Company (Threepenny Opera), Round House Theatre (Glengarry Glen Ross and How to Write a New Book for the Bible), Everyman Theatre (The Dresser, Crimes of the Heart), Studio Theatre (DIRT), Urban Arias (She/After, Photo Op), The Kennedy Center American College Dance Festival, Iowa Summer Rep (PSM 2012). She was also the dance production coordinator at the University of Maryland School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. Ms. Patrick has an M.F.A. in Stage Management from the University of Iowa

MATTHEW SCHLOMER is the conductor of the Interlochen Arts Academy Band, teaches conducting and classical saxophone at the Academy, and serves on the faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp. Previous positions have been at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Luther College, Edgewood College, Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School, and Sheboygan High School. He studied wind conducting with Scott Teeple and Allan McMurray, saxophone with Jean-Marie Londeix and Tom Myer, and dance with Kate Corby and Mary Brennan. He holds a doctoral degree in Instrumental Conducting with a minor concentration in Dance from the University of Wisconsin, a bachelor degree in Music Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a gold medal in saxophone from Bordeaux Regional Conservatory in France. While at UW- Madison he twice received the Richard Church Memorial Conducting Award. Dr. Schlomer is an avid collaborator, creating events with artists in music, film, dance, creative writing, theater, and the culinary arts. He is resident conductor of the experimental percussion group Clocks in Motion and the Traverse City Dance Project. He serves internationally as a conductor, clinician and innovator in music education.

CLYDE SHEETS is the instructor of design and production at Interlochen Arts Academy. He has designed works for theatre, ballet, opera, and contemporary dance over the past 20 years. Mr. Sheets taught dance lighting/collaborative process at Mills College in Oakland, California and was the production manager for theater arts at San Francisco State University, where he earned an M.F.A. in design. He received Isadora Duncan Dance Awards for Deborah Slater’s Hotel of Memories at CounterPulse in San Francisco; company awards for Lizz Roman and Dancers and Sean Dorsey Dance; and a Bay Area Critics Design team award for Metamorphosis at Aurora Theater in Berkeley, California. Mr. Sheets was the lighting designer for the Academy’s 2014 production of Secret in the Wings, Sleeping Beauty, the 8th Blackbird Project and Spring Dance Concert and the 2015 production of Caucasian Chalk Circle for which he designed the set and lighting.
