WIGHTMAN STADIUM: HOME OF THE PIONEERS

WIGHTMANSTADIUM

As part of the University’s Campus andAthletic Field Renovation Project,Wightman Stadium, the 3,000-seat homefor Pioneer football and field hockey, underwent a makeover in the summer of2004 when A-Turf, a state-of-the-art grass-like synthetic surface, was laid down.

On Sept. 3, 2004, the Pioneer footballteam played its first game at renovatedWightman Stadium when it hosted NCAADivision III playoff quarterfinalist DelawareValley under the Friday night lights beforea capacity crowd. The new turf generatedplenty of positive feedback from Pioneerplayers and opponents alike, while theimproved facility generated excitement across the entire campus.

“Coming from Rutgers, where we played on a state-of-the-art field every Saturday, I can tell you that we will beplaying on a first-class surface each Saturday at Wightman Stadium,” Pioneers’ coach Mike Miello said. “Itreally gives you an air of a big-time atmosphere.”

Added junior wide receiver David Packard: “It’s great playing on this field because not only is it like playing ona Division I surface, as coach Miello said, but it shows the support the school is putting behind us. Since we gotthis field, you can see that a lot more people are behind William Paterson football.”
