The cold-weather months arentjust hard on humans. Pets can also be affected by the chilly tempera-tures.

Keeping pets safe and happy when its cold is a major concernfor all pet owners. Marc Morrone,

renowned pet expert and host ofHallmark Channels Petkeeping

with Marc Morrone (airs week-days at noon), is a modern-day Dr.Dolittle and Martha Stewarts go-toguy in the world of four-legged and

winged beasts, from dogs to catsand rabbits to parrots.

On his show, Marc reveals whatviewers need to know about caringfor their pets, and below are Marcstop tips for winter pet care:n When tting dogs with boots

and sweaters, make sure to practiceinside your home rst. If your petsarent comfortable walking aroundthe house in their gear, they will not

be comfortable in the outdoors.n Dont forget about the wild

animals in the winter. Placing a bird feeder outside your windowcan mean the difference betweenlife and death for a little songbird.

n Keep antifreeze out of reachof pets. It is extremely toxic. Marccannot stress that enough.n If you live in an apartment

building or co-op, petition theboard to only use pet-safe deicer onthe sidewalks and courtyard walk-

ways throughout the winter.n If you own a reptile, keep ex-

tra heat lamps on hand during the winter months in case one blowsout during a holiday or snowstormand you cant get out to replace the

bulb.n In the winter, dry air causes

dogs and cats to shed quite a bit. Tocombat this, brush your pet dailyand add raw axseed oil to yourpets food (1 teaspoon for every 10lbs. of your pets weight). This willhelp reduce dryness of the skin.

In every episode of Petkeeping with Marc Morrone, customers

stop by with pet in hand seekingMarcs advice on every topic fromcommon cat/dog misconceptionsto how to keep children and petssafe and happy while living un-der the same roof. This season, helooks at plus-size pets, baby pets, older pets, high-maintenance petsand more.

    NORTH AMERICAN PRECISSYNDICATE

When its cold outside, its not un-sual to cut back on activity, dive intohe comfort food and put on a few extraounds. Its true for four-legged fam-

ly members as well as humans. Just asith people, pet obesity is on the risend inactivity just adds to the problem.

Fortunately, you can take steps toet your pet back on track before obesityriggers other health issues. Arthritis, iabetes, heart disease, high blood pres-

sure and other health problems are allmore prevalent when people or pets car-ry a few extra pounds. If you cant feel

your pets ribs or spine easily, it may betime for your pet to shed a few pounds.

Here are some tips to help:n Balance their diet Visit your

vet to set a target weight and deter-mine how much food and the type offood thats best for your dogs or catsage, weight and overall health. Findinghealthier snacks and treats can be one

way to cut down on additional pounds. Also, skip the table scraps and serve

smaller portion sizes.nSupplement their diet Some-

times, a dog or cat will need somethingextra in the diet to make it more bal-anced. For example, Bactaquin Diges-tive Health Supplement helps restoreintestinal health following imbalancesin your pets diet.nGet active Schedule walks and

look for some indoor venues that maybe pet friendly-such as a mall or pet daycare center that offers additional activi-ties. Start slowly and increase exercisetime as you go.

n Cats need activity too Setsome time to play with your cat usingtoys that simulate hunting. Short 15- to20-minute sessions can burn off a lot ofcalories and may cut down on nocturnalactivity.n Help your pets mobility If

your dog or cat slows down, limps orshows other changes during exercise, consult your vet. Pets will slow downas arthritis ares up, and products withglucosamine and chondroitin play animportant role in maintaining optimal

    joint function.

ChangeWe are like plants; we are either growing or dying. There is no stopping. Life is filled with cycles, up and down. In Physics,

there is a term call Entropy. This means everything moves toward maximum randomness or chaos. That is the natural courseof things unless something holds it together and brings things back to order. Life is what creates the energy to put thingsback in order. If you never clean and organize your home, eventually it will be utter chaos. So, growth, in human terms, means thinking, organizing, and planning for the future. This is the creative process that brings it all back together whenthings have drifted apart.

Deep inside, we all know that were changing. But our ability to change is limited by our comfort zone. On every issuewe have a comfort zone. Some may like crowds, some like to be alone, our body weight has a comfort zone, and tobaccoand alcohol use have a comfort zone. To change we must learn and accept something new about ourselves. It may be asmall step outside of our comfort zone. That changes us, just a little. We no longer want to live the way we have been.

That means we had to change and to learn to live in a different way. Once we begin to make changes it becomes nonstop:

learn about ourselves, change a little, learn about ourselves, change a little more, and so on. All we know is that each stepof learning and changing makes life better. How long can it keep getting better? As long as we keep learning; striving toknow more about ourselves.

Natural health is about change and taking responsibility. We have been conditioned by the medical community, thenews, the television, the government, our religions, and our schools to follow the rules. This builds our comfort zones andkeeps us stuck there.

A few months ago, I had a man in the office for a consultation for natural treatments for cancer. Some time after hebegan his natural program, he told me that he had to tell his regular doctor to treat him like he was going to live, not likehe was dying. In the doctors mind, this man was going to die, so he had stopped treating the bloodpressure and diabetes as aggressively as before. This man had made a choice, he was going to liveand he wanted everyone else around him to treat him that way. This was a great and courageousstep; a leap of faith. This greatly increases chances of living to be an old man.

Fortunately, most of us are not faced with such a huge task of changing our thinking. Changealways starts in the mind. We must have a desirable, worthwhile goal. We then must mentally

visualize and imagine ourselves changing, doing the new thing. When we change the comfort zonein our mind, we can more easily move into that scary area physically and emotionally.

So learn to change and grow personally, put energy into life to push the chaos back into a moreorganized, desirable situation.
