Water is taken from a river or lake and, once it is cleaned, it is stored in a reservoir like the one in this photograph
![Page 2: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Water comes from the reservoir to our homes through large pipes that are laid in the ground
![Page 3: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Pipes can be made of steel like these or plastic like the ones in the last slide
![Page 4: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Some water pipes are laidin fields
![Page 5: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Some water pipes are laid in roads
![Page 6: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Some water pipes are connected by pushing them together
![Page 7: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
![Page 8: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
These pipes areconnected by a machine that melts the ends of the pipestogether
![Page 9: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
These pipes are joined together using bolts
![Page 10: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Before starting to dig the engineer must make sure that nothing important is in the ground that the excavator could damage
![Page 11: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
It is the Engineer’sjob to make surethe workis donecorrectly
Can you spotThe engineer?
![Page 12: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The engineer has drawings to show him/her where the water pipes are to go
![Page 13: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
For example can you see the yellow gas pipe in the photograph? What do you think might happen if the excavator bucket strikes it?
![Page 14: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The soil is loaded onto a truck and taken away
![Page 15: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
![Page 16: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The pipes are then laid in the ground and joined together
![Page 17: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Why do you think these large steel boxes are used? The next two slides might give you a clue
![Page 18: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
![Page 19: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
![Page 20: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
This machine can drill a pipe under a bridge
![Page 21: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Why do you think there are barriers around the excavation?
![Page 22: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
![Page 23: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
What do you think the small blue pipes are for?
![Page 24: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Once the pipe is in the ground small stones are placed around it
![Page 25: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
The trench is then filled to the top with more stone
![Page 26: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
When the pipe trench has been filled to the top its time to tar
![Page 27: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
The road is then prepared for tarring
![Page 28: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Trucks come with tar for the road
![Page 29: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
The road is then tarred
![Page 30: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
![Page 31: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Finally the road is tidied up and is reopened to the public again
![Page 32: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
The pipes are then washed with chlorine and tested to make sure there are no leaks
![Page 33: Pioctúirí uisce mób](https://reader037.vdocuments.site/reader037/viewer/2022110201/55cc805abb61eb13438b4681/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Now the waterhas made the journey from the reservoir to your kitchen tap!
