Dear Parishioners,

Forgive me if this story is one you have often heard repeated but I think therecould be a moral there worth considering!

A police recruit's response to a problem set in a training exam read as follows:-

You are on the beat and you see two dogs fighting. The dogs knock a baby outof its pram causing a car to swerve off the road and smash into a grocer'sshop. A pedestrian is seriously injured, but, during the confusion a woman's

bag is snatched. A crowd of onlookers chase after the thief and, in a huge building up of traffic, the ambulance is blocked from getting to the victim of thecrash. State, in order of priority, your course of action?

The immediate response from the recruit, 'Take off my uniform and minglewith the crowd'!

Jesus was never afraid to stand out from the crowd and challenge systems andtraditions which he felt had lost their focus or had become so legalistic that theywere nothing more than rules and regulations. There is a place for rules,regulations, tradition and structure but the danger is that they can so often

become substitutes for the real essence and core of what they are meant torepresent. Real growth only takes place when we are willing to face challenge,

and challenge carries with it the real possibility of the need for change. Weneed to be in a state of continually assessing what we do, why we do it andwhat would Jesus do or want us to do in the various situations we find ourselvesin.

Perhaps in an uncertain world we learn more of what it means to really trust inGod even when our world, like the recruits, seems out of control! The little

poem says a lot in a few words:-

Said the robin to the sparrowI would really like to know

why those anxious human beingsrush about and worry so?

Said the sparrow to the robin'Friend, I think that it must be

that they have no Heavenly Father

such as cares for you and me'!

YOUTH CLUB YOUTH CLUB

TRIPTRIP LASER TAGLASER TAG

On the 6 th of April, some people

from the youth club went on a tripto Rathdrum. Two cars set off tolaser tag. When we got there wefirst went on bumper boats on alake, while Andy and his friend,who owned the place, set up thelaser tag.As we approached the field wewere shocked at how big the fieldwas. The rules were explained tous and that, to get eliminated, youneeded to get shot at a number of times. We were all given guns anda strap to wear on our heads. Theobject of the game was to shoot

people where the target was ontheir head. Laser beams were usedinstead of real bullets.

We split up into two teams which

included Andy, Mr. Bennett andthe owner of the laser tag. We played Capture the Flag and LastMan Standing. Throughout thehour we had great fun killingeach other and watching Mr.Bennett falling on his face whilecapturing the flag and Andy gettingkilled within the first 2 minutes.There was only a small group of us, Jordan Grant Roe, CormacShannon, Sam Molloy, Robert

Norse, Jenny Massy and myself.It was a brilliant day out and reallygot the adrenaline pumping! Imsure we would all agree thatanother trip there would be greatcraic! By Gary OSullivan

Holy Baptism at Newcastle21 st April: Eoghan Byrne, son of Jonathan and Lorraine, ChurchLane, Newcastle. We are veryhappy to congratulate Jonathan andLorraine and hope that Eoghan willgrow to love and serve God inwhose name he is baptised, but arevery sorry to be saying goodbye tothem and their children as theymove to the London area. Lorrainehas been a valued Sunday Schoolteacher and superintendent as wellas organising our children'ssummer club/camp. She was alsoan active member of the parentsand tots group. BowlsThe season for indoor bowls iswinding down but several of theClub matches remain to be played.Any member who is aware thatthey have unplayed matches tocomplete would be advised tocontact their opponents and arrangeto get them played as soon as

possible. The club aims to finish bythe end of May.There was a good turnout for theMillennium Cup which we hostedon 13 th April. The winners were

Newtown with Aughrim as therunners up. In spite of some very

promising newcomers who joined

us this year, Newcastle didntfeature in the results this time butwe hope for better results next year as the newer members gainexperience.The new Season will commence inearly September as usual.

Table TennisTable tennis continues everyMonday evening from 8pm in theMcLean Room (behind StMatthews Church in

Newtownmountkennedy). There isa growing number taking part andnew members are always welcome.Information from Heather at 087-9422172

Junior Table TennisIf you are of secondary school age,and would be interested in playingtable tennis on a Monday eveningfrom 7-8pm please let the Rector know. If there are enough players

Walking ClubA small group braved the drizzlyweather on Wednesday 24th Aprilfor the inaugural meeting of theclub, and ended up having a very

pleasant walk up the Church Lane.

CrecheThe crche is available in RectoryCottage during all morningservices in Newcastle Church. All

pre-schoolers are welcome and parents can stay with their child or

pop over during the service if theywish. Two volunteer parentssupervise each week.

Sunday SchoolEveryone at Sunday School sendsLorraine and her family every good

wish for the future as they starttheir new life in the UK.This month there will be SundaySchool at Newcastle on Sundays19 th and 26 th May. As usualchildren will leave with theteachers after the first hymn.

Mothers UnionOn a recent outing to see Calendar Girls in the Mermaid Theatre inBray, some of us came across theGreystones branch of the MothersUnion having a great night out. It

prompted us to wonder aboutreviving our parish branch. Bycoincidence, the President of theMothers Union in the Dublin/Glendalough diocese was giving aworkshop at the Faith in ActionConference and would be more

than willing to visit us to help setup. For everyones information,the Mothers Union has moved withthe times. It now takes men andnon-mothers and is interested in alltypes of familiesnot just thetraditional nuclear family. It

really needs a new name!Interested persons contact Karen .

Easter Vestry Calary's Easter Vestry was held onThurdsay 11 April. William went

through a review of the year andthanked all of those who hadassisted in any way during theyear, including the churchwardens,organists, those who cleanedthe church and made it look so wellfor services. This was followed byelection of Select Vestry.Discussions then took place on theArts Festival in October, the eventsthat have been arranged for Musicin Calary and the next parish socialevent. Thanks is also due to thoseladies who provided tea on thenight of the meeting.

Calary Supper A thanks to all of those who servedup such a wonderful feast to the 50

people who attended the supper onFriday 19 April. The church roomwas full to capacity and thank youto all of our friends from

Newcastle, Newtownmount-kennedy and our neighbours whosupported this fund raising event

Parish Barbeque We are planning a BBQ on 29 th

June for the parish and hope tohave a plant stall for Fields of Lifeto top up the funds. Gardeners,

please pot up some plants for thestall.

The Korean Cross Returns to Korea

Canon Bob Jennings, together with over 200 veterans from Ireland,England, and the Commonwealth, returned to Korea at the end of April to remember the 60th anniversary of the Armistice.

As he appears to be the only surviving Irish army chaplain of theKorean War, he has been asked to conduct six services including

the dedication of a war memorial to Irish soldiers and civilians whowere killed during the war. Others include memorial services atUnited Nations and Commonwealth war cemeteries. Anzac Dayfor New Zealanders and Australians, and Imjin Battlefield servicefor Royal Ulster Rifles.

Canon Bob brought with him the Korean Cross from NewcastleChurch and used it at all the Services. It had been fashioned fromshell cases used in the Korean War. It was a fitting symbol of theProphet Micahs promise of turning swords into plough sharesand spears into pruning hooks - a weapon of war but now asymbol of peace and reconciliation.

Three and a quarter million soldiers and civilians from all sides losttheir lives in the largely forgotten Korean War 19511953. Manyyoung men from the Irish Republic served in the United NationsKorean War, not only in Irish Regiments, but also in British andCommonwealth Regiments.

Faith in Action Conference

The Rector, Karen Reynolds and Derek Neilson attended the Faith inAction Conference organised by the Diocesan Social Action Committee,and held on Saturday 20 th April in the Church of Ireland College of Education in Rathmines. It was both a challenging and inspirational day.

There were three speakers in the morning session. Father Peter McVerryspoke about his work with the homeless over the last 40 years. His

passion for justice for those who not only have no material possessions, but also have no one to care about them, was evident in the stories hetold to illustrate their plight.

Alice Leahy spoke about her work with Trust, which is an organisationwhich also works with the homeless, ensuring that hundreds have a daily

meal and somewhere to wash and receive basic medical care.

Lastly, Rev Olive Donoghue from the Stradbally Union of Parishesspoke about the links she and her parish have forged with charities andhow she went about initiating these links. Her talk could only bedescribed as hilarious while, at the same time, getting her point acrossvery effectively.

In the afternoon everyone was assigned two workshops covering varioustopics such as Dealing with Debt, Online Bullying, Creating Links

between Parish and Disadvantaged Communities, EducationalDisadvantage, Positive Mental Health, Healthy Eating on a Budget, andEngaging with New Communities. Most of these workshops werecovered between the three representatives. The workshops were a mix

of information, discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.

All in all, the day very definitely produced food for thought about therole of our church in a world where so many are suffering and deprived.
