the vietnam veterans memorial:“the memphis connection”

Veterans Day, November 11–December 30 2011

Visitors to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial see their reflection in its highly polished marble. Memphians will see a special kind of reflection when they view the architect’s sample of the Memorial that will be on exhibit at the Pink Palace Museum beginning Veterans’ Day 2011. This is because everyone of the 58,267 names on the wall was inscribed in Memphis by local firm, Binswanger Glass.

This exhibit will connect people who lived through the Vietnam Era–and those who came after–to that time in a way no other object can. In addition to the sample, the exhibit will include a brief video recounting its creation. Featured are Richard Binswanger, who donated the sample to the Pink Palace, and Bryan Carter, the engineer who developed the process and supervised the project.

Additional programming is under development now. In time, we envision the sample will be part of all new exhibits being planned for the museum.

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALFRED

WERTHEIMER

July 21–October 14, 2012Elvis at 21, Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer is a photographic journey of a walk to fame, created in verite fashion –without a hint of irony – by Al Wertheimer of one of the most significant cultural icons of the twentieth century. This surprisingly relevant photographic exhibition is enhanced by the printing process. The 56 pigment prints give Wertheimer’s unique visual record a cinematic power that makes Elvis’ road to fame palpable. Curated with an eye toward the art of the photograph, Elvis at 21, is a brilliant and fleeting moment of intimacy created by the photographer as modernist. It is a rare moment in history chronicling a time before Elvis becomes icon; before security and money build walls between him and his fans.

January 28–May 25, 2012The Bison: American Icon explores the meaning and significance of this iconic creature from the Plains Native American culture of the 1800s through the commercial and national symbol of the present. The Bison charts the dramatic changes that occurred to the creature and its habitat and to the people who depended upon it for the daily existence.
