Pinch Pot Monsters GRADE / AGE K – 3rd grade TEACHING GOALS/OBJECTIVES Students will learn how to pinch pot by creating “monsters”. This project can also be combined with the book, “Anhʼs Anger”, which helps children deal with anger issues with the help of an anger monster. TECHNIQUES / SKILLS Hand building techniques: roll coils & pinch potting Slipping & scoring monster parts MATERIALS Clay slip skewers plastic forks and knives canvas water buckets cutting wire sponges BACKGROUND This project is a great way to introduce beginning children to learn how to make a pinch pot and learn to attach small parts. LESSON DESCRIPTION 1. Create a pinch pot to use as the body of the monster. 2. Tap the pinch pot on one side so that it can sit and resemble a open mouth 3. Students can roll small balls for eyeballs, coils for body parts, sharp teeth, etc. 4. “Anhʼs Anger” can be incorporated to have the children create their own anger monster.

TROUBLE SHOOTING Make sure there arenʼt any parts that are too fragile. Make sure that all parts are slipped and scored. Make sure a bottom is define so that the monster donʼt end up rolling around after itʼs been fired in the kiln.
