ACCESSORY CARRYING CASES

To PIN . . . Or NOT To PIN? SOME FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING: PIN-TYPE OR PINLESS?

1. Pin-type meters make holes. Pinless meters do not (below right).

2. Samples must be large enough to fill the pinless sensor pad—size 1.2 x 1.5 up to 2.0 x 2.5 in. 3. Pinless sensor should have good contact with the sample surface. Bandsaw roughness is acceptable.

Curved surfaces are not suitable, but it may be possible to measure the flat bottom of a bowl. 4. Pinless meters are calibrated on the assumption that the sample is one inch thick (or 1.5 inches for

CT828 & CT858). Corrections for thinner samples are acceptable down to 0.25 inches. 5. Pinless meters have limited depth sensing (either one inch or 1.5 inches depending on model) so for

material thicker than two inches (or three, depending) the meter is not reading to the central, and possibly wettest, region.

6. Pin-type meters have unlimited depth sensing, if one is prepared to insert probes (long nails or spikes) to the required depth, and connect the probes to the meter pins. Extension leads with clips

are included with all our pin-type meters for this purpose (below left). 7. Remote monitoring of wood drying in a chamber is easy with pin-type meters. Use nails as probes in

one or more sample boards, and feed wires through hole in chamber wall to connect to meter pins.

Effects Of Shrinkage & Swelling

SOME PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM IMPROPER WOOD DRYING O R STORAGE

Flat, square, and round wood sections change shape as the wood is dried. The distortion is affected by the direction of the annual growth rings. The clear space surrounding each wood section is the shrinkage during drying from green to oven-dry.

These three boards were identical and flat at a moisture content of 14%. The top board has been dried to less than 4% and has shrunk and warped. The bottom board has reabsorbed moisture from the air to reach 20% moisture content and has swollen and warped in the opposite direction.

TYPES OF WARPING

A tabletop made from boards glued together will deform in different ways, depending on whether the growth rings in the individual boards are all oriented in the same direction or in alternating directions.

These effects result from the fact that wood is stable along the grain, but shrinks and swells across the grain. These frame corners were mitered and assembled correctly at the correct moisture content. The upper frame was then dried, while the lower frame was exposed to high humidity. The mitered joints separated in different ways.

MOISTURE CONTENT OF WOOD The moisture content of wood is measured as the ratio of the weight of water in a given piece of wood, to the weight of the wood when it is completely dry (or “oven dry”) and is usually expressed as a percentage. The “green” wood of a freshly felled tree may have a moisture content anywhere in the range 30% to over 200%, depending on the species (see table below). Almost all of this water must be removed from the wood before it is fit to be used (the desired moisture content depends on the intended purpose). Furthermore, wood is a cellulose material which behaves somewhat like a sponge, so that even wood which has been “kiln dried” down to 7% (a typical value for furniture use) may in fact later reabsorb water from the atmosphere. Actually all wood is constantly losing or gaining water to or from the environment—the moisture content of wood changes as the relative humidity changes, and coats of varnish or paint can only slow the process, not stop it. As the moisture content of improperly dried or stored wood changes, so does the wood expand or contract, potentially producing all manner of disastrous defects (and hence wood warping nightmares).
