Introduction
General Description
The Size 8 Directiona ControlValve serves as a controlvalve package. It offers direc-tional control, pilot pressurereducers, pilot chokes, andmain stage stroke adjust-ment to control the flow.
The valves are generallyused to control large flowsup to 700 l/min (185 USgpm)at 350 bar (5000 psi) and pro-vide low pressure drops. Therange includes:
• DG3V-8 - remote pilotoperated valve.
• DG5V-8-S - DG4V-3S-60standard performance D03pilot valve 100 bar (1450psi) tank line rating.
• DG5V-8-H - DG4V-3-60high performance D03pilot valve 210 bar (3000psi) tank line rating.
Each valve contains a main-stage spool which is posi-tioned in the valve by specialarrangement. The fourarrangements are:
• Spring offset - For singlestage operation, onespring returns spool to anoffset position. Fortwo–stage operation, springs and washers areremoved from main stageand offset action isobtained from pilot valve.
• Spring centered - Springand washer are located onboth ends of main stagespool to control centering.
• Pressure centered -Centering springs areused in addition to pilotpressure, to provide posi-tive centering should pilotpressure fail.
• No–spring detented -Springs and washers areprovided so that in theevent of pilot pressure fail-ure, the main spool willspring center.

ModelDescription/PerformanceCharacteristics
General Description
DG3V-8 models are singlestage remote pilot operateddirectional control valves. These valves are generallyused to control the directionof flow in a hydraulic circuit. This in turn would control themovement of a work cylinderor the rotation of a fluidmotor.
Installation Data
Drain connection must bepiped directly to tank througha surge free line so there willbe no back pressure at thisport.
Pressure Centered Models
Designated by ‘‘D’’ underspring/spool arrangement inmodel code.
This option provides faster, more positive spring center-ing time by use of pilot pres-sure to center the spool. Thevalve spool is returned tocenter position when pilotpressure is applied at bothends of the spool. The cen-tering springs are used inaddition to pilot pressure toensure positive centering ofspool.
If pilot pressure fails or fallsbelow the required minimum, the spool will spring return tothe center position. Pilot pres-sure is not available throughthe use of and integral checkvalve. Pressure centeredvalves have a drain port ‘‘W’’and subplate must have provi-sions for this feature.
Note
Pressure centered valvesrequire a pilot valve whichdirects pilot oil to connec-tions ‘‘X’’ and ‘‘Y’’ of thevalve at the same time pres-sure centering is desired. The
centering time depends onthe rate of pressure rise inthe pilot chamber.
Spring Offset Models
Designated by ‘‘A’’ underspring/spool arrangement inmodel code.
Spring offset model has aninternal spring which returnsthe spool to offset positionwhen the pilot connection‘‘X’’ is open to tank. Pilotconnection ‘‘Y’’ becomes adrain connection and mustbe pioped directly to tank atatmospheric pressurethrough a surge-free tankline. Back pressure at thisconnection would causevalve to malfunction.
Caution: Spring off-set models containa high assembled
spring load. Call EatonService for disassemblyinstructions.
Spring Centered Models
Designated by ‘‘C’’ underspring/spool arrangement inmodel code.
A spring and washer arrange-ment is used on both endsof the spool. If control pres-sure is removed, the valvewill go to center position dueto spring force.
No-Spring Models
Designated by a ‘‘Blank’’under spring/spool arrange-ment in model code.
When pilot pressure isremoved on no-spring models, the spool remains in the lastposition attained providedthere is no unusual shock, vibration, pressure transientsand the spool axis is horizontal.
PerformanceCharacteristics
Spring centered, pressurecentered and spring offsetmodels require continuouspilot pressure to maintainshifted position. Spring cen-tered models return valvespool to center position bycentering springs when pilotpressure fails or falls belowminimum requirement.
Port connections are madeby mounting the valves on asubplate or manifold havingmounting dimensions whichconform to NFPA-D08/D10(ISO-4401-08/10) pattern.
Shift Times
Shift times are defined asthe time from pilot pressureapplication/removal to thepoint of the start of a pres-sure rise/decline in appropri-ate port.
Caution: Flow con-ditions of the springcentered position
must be selected with care, both for the effect on thedirection of the flow, and thepilot pressure. (The “9” mainspool will not ensure suffi-cient pilot pressure in thecenter position for internalpilot pressure models.)
Pressure centered models:Valve spool is returned tocenter position by pilot pres-sure, when pilot pressure isremoved. If pilot pressurefails or falls below therequired minimum, the valvespool will spring return tocenter position. (At springcentered valve flow rates).
Caution: Surges ofoil in a commonpilot valve drain line
serving these and othervalves can be of sufficientmagnitude to cause inadver-tant shifting of these valves. This is particularly critical inthe no-spring type valves.Separate drain lines or avented drain manifold with acontinuous downward pathto tank is necessary. Thisapplies to connection ‘‘Y’’ onspring offset valves where‘‘Y’’ is piped as a drain forpressure centered models.Drain connection ‘‘W’’ mustbe piped directly to tankthrough a surge free line sothere will be no back pres-sure at drain.
Note
Any sliding spool valve, if heldfor long periods of time, maystick and not spring returndue to fluid residue formationand therefore, should becycled periodically to preventthis from happening.
If used as other than a nor-mal 4–way valve, consultyour Eaton representative.

Optional Features
Integral Check Valves
For internal pilot pressure, anintegral pressure port checkvalve is available. This backpressure will be present atthe cylinder ports. The pilotpressure generated is thetotal of: P T drop throughthe valve in center condition, pressure drop through thecheck valve, plus the pres-sure at the tank port.
To prevent load drop, a checkvalve in the pressure portcan be used to preventreverse flow from a cylinderport to the pressure port.
Pilot Choke DGMFN-3-Y-A2W-B2W-41
Pilot choke increases theamount of time to shift themainstage spool, loweringthe possibility of large flowtransients in the circuit. It isadjusted by backing off lock-nuts and turning adjustingscrews inward to decreaserate of spool travel and out-ward to increase spool travelrate. See spool control modi-fications in model code.
Stroke Adjustment
Stroke adjustment limitsmovement of the mainstagespool. Backing off the jamnutand turning the adjustingscrew inward decreasesspool stroke. See spool con-trol modifications in modelcode.).

ModelDescription/PerformanceCharacteristics
General Description
DG5V-8 models are two-stage directional controlvalves having an integrallymounted wet armature sole-noid pilot valve. These valvesare generally used to controlthe movement of a workcylinder or the rotation of afluid motor.
If pilot pressure fails or fallsbelow the required mini-mum, the spool will springreturn to the center position.Pilot pressure is not availablethrough the use of and inte-gral check valve. Pressurecentered valves have a drainport ‘‘W’’ and must have pro-visions for this feature.
Note
Pressure centered valvesrequire a pilot valve whichdirects pilot oil to connec-tions ‘‘X’’ and ‘‘Y’’ of thevalve at the same time pres-sure centering is desired. Thecentering time depends onthe rate of pressure rise inthe pilot chamber.
When the solenoid is de-ener-gized, the spool returns to thelast position attained.PerformanceCharacteristics
Spring centered, pressurecentered and spring offsetmodels require continuouspilot pressure to maintainshifted position. Spring cen-tered models return valvespool to center position bycentering springs when pilotpressure fails or falls belowminimum requirement.
Pressure centered models:
Valve spool is returned tocenter position by pilot pres-sure, when pilot pressure isremoved. If pilot pressurefails or falls below therequired minimum, the valvespool will spring return tocenter position. (At springcentered valve flow rates).
Caution: Surges ofoil in a commontank line serving
these and other valves canbe sufficient enough tocause inadvertent shifting ofthese valves. This is very crit-ical in the no-spring detentedvalves. Separate tank lines ora vented manifold with acontinuous downward pathto tank is necessary.
Note
Any sliding spool valve, ifheld for long periods of time, may stick and not springreturn due to fluid residueformation and therefore,
should be cycled periodicallyto prevent this from happen-ing.
Shifting Action
The pilot valve solenoids ofspring centered, pressurecentered, and spring offsetmodels must be energizedcontinuously to keep themain stage spool in the shift-ed position. No-springdetented models only needto be energized momentarily(for approximately 0.1 sec-ond).
Spring centered and pres-sure centered models returnthe valve spool to the centerposition when both solenoidsare de-energized or pilotpressure fails or falls belowminimum requirements.Spring offset models returnthe spool to the offset posi-tion by pilot pressure whenthe solenoid is de-energized.
When no-spring detentedmodels are de-energized, thepilot and main spools remainin their last position as longas there are no unusualshock, vibration, or pressuretransients, and the spool axisis horizontal. If pilot pressurefails or falls below minimumrequirements, the mainspool will spring center (atspring centered flow rates),but will not drift to a reversalof flow position. The pilotstage will remain in thedetented position.
When used as other than anormal 4–way valve, consultyour Eaton representative.

External drain models drain the pilot valve through the ‘‘Y’ port of the mainstage. To provide proper operation without malfunction, thepilot pressure must always exceed tank or drain line pressure by the minimum pilot pressure required per valve and spool type (see charts on page 16). Tank or drain line surges which would reduce this differential are tobe avoided as they may cause the mainstage to shift. Mainstage tank pressure is limited to the tank line rating of the pilot valve on internally drained models (with ‘‘T’’ included in the model code). Internal drains may beused with all models except pressure centered ‘‘D’’ models. Pressure centered models must be externally drained through ‘‘Y’’ and ‘‘W’’ ports. To achieve the maximum tank line rating of 350 bar (5000 psi) of the mainstage,an external pilot drain must be used and it is recommended that a separate line be provided directly to the tank.

Pressure Drop &Malfunction Flow
The following table lists theappropriate pressure dropcurve and malfunction flowcurve between ports foreach spool type. Use the fol-lowing example to determinepressure drop for a selectedspool.
Example: Find the pressuredrop from P B for type 7spool. Using the table findnumeral 7 in the spool typecolumn.
To the right of numeral 7 findthe reference curve 2 (frompressure drop curve chart atbottom of page) under P Bcolumn.
The pressure drop from P Bfor type 7 spool would beobtained on curve 2.Likewise, the malfunction fornumeral 7 would be foundon curve 1 (from malfunctionflow curve chart at bottom ofpage).
1. Figures in the pressuredrop chart give approximatepressure drop (ΔP) whenpassing 473 l/min (125USgpm) flow (Q) of 35 cSt(164 SUS) fluids(s) having.865 specific gravity.
2. For any other flow rate(Q1), the pressure drop (ΔP1)will be approximately: ΔP1 = ΔP(Q1/Q)2.
3. For any other viscosity(s),the pressure drop (ΔP), willchange as follows:
4. For any other specificgravity (G1), the pressuredrop (ΔP1) will be approxi-mately: ΔP1 = ΔP(G1/G).

Response Times
Response times are definedas the time from solenoidenergization/de-energizationto the point of the start of apressure rise/decline inappropriate port.
Solenoid Energizing
Spring centered, pressurecentered and spring offsetDG5V-8 types must be ener-gized continuously. No-springdetented DG5V-8 type maybe energized momentarily.Pressure centered and springcentered DG5V-8 typesreturn valve spool to centerposition when both solenoidsare de-energized.
Mounting Position
No–spring detented valvesmust be installed with thelongitudinal axis horizontal forgood machine reliability. Themounting position of springcentered and spring offsetmodels is unrestricted pro-vided that the pilot pressuresupply is maintained asrequired. (Spring offsetvalves do not have a springin the main spool section.)

Pilot ChokeDGMFN-3-Y-A2W-B2W-41
Pilot choke increases theamount of time to shift themainstage spool, loweringthe possibility of large flowtransients in the circuit. It isadjusted by backing off lock-nuts and turning adjustingscrews inward to decreaserate of spool travel and out-ward to increase spool travelrate. See spool control modi-fications in model code.
Stroke Adjustment
Stroke adjustment limitsmovement of the mainstagespool. Backing off the jamnutand turning the adjustingscrew inward decreasesspool stroke. See spool con-trol modifications in modelcode.

Reducer ModuleDGMX2-3-PP-FW-S-40-EN91
The reducer module isrequired for piloted modelswhen pilot prerssureexceeds 210 bar (3000 psi). These two-stage spoolvalves maintain a reducedoutlet pressure against varia-tions in inlet pressure. Thesevalves are able to act asrelief valves (at 50% of themaximum flow) to preventexcess pressure being devel-oped when an actuator issubject to a reactive load.
Pressure Centered Models
This option provides fasterspring centering time byusing pilot pressure to centerthe spool. The centeringsprings are used in additionto pilot pressure to ensurepositive centering of thespool. The valve spool isreturned to center positionby pilot pressure and center-ing springs. If pilot pressurefails or falls below therequired minimum, the spoolwill return to center positionat minimum pilot pressureflow rates for pressure cen-tered valves.

Integral Check Valves
For internal pilot pressure, anintegral pressure port checkvalve is required for internallypiloted valves with open cen-ter spools (0,1,4,8 & 9). Thepilot pressure generated isthe total of: P?T dropthrough the valve in centercondition, pressure dropthrough the check valve, plusthe pressure at the tank port.
For proper operation, totalpressure drop must begreater than the minimumrequired pilot pressure (seechart). To prevent load drop, acheck valve in the pressureport can be used to preventreverse flow from a cylinderport to pressure port. If usingas reverse flow check, maxi-mum reverse pressure is lim-ited to 210 bar (3000 psi).
X - Fast Response
Use of this option decreasesthe shift time and increasesthe system shock genera-tion. This requires theremoval of an orifice plugwithin the mainstage body. Itis available on all models byadding ‘‘X’’ to the modelcode. Example: DG5V-8-(*)-2C-X-(*)-10
When a standardperformance pilot isselected and pilot
pressure is above 3000 psi,the reducer module isrequired to limit high drainline pressure transients gen-erated during shifting.

Application Data
Fluid Cleanliness
Proper fluid condition isessential for long and satis-factory life of hydraulic com-ponents and systems.Hydraulic fluid must have thecorrect balance of cleanliness, materials, and additives forprotection against wear ofcomponents, elevated viscosi-ty, and inclusion of air.
Essential information on thecorrect methods for treatinghydraulic fluid is included inEaton publication 561“Vickers Guide to SystemicContamination Control” avail-able from your local Eatondistributor or by contactingEaton, Incorporated.
Recommendations on filtra-tion and the selection ofproducts to control fluid con-dition are included in 561.
Recommended cleanlinesslevels, using petroleum oilunder common conditions, are based on the highestfluid pressure levels in thesystem and are coded in thechart below. Fluids otherthan petroleum, severe serv-ice cycles, or temperatureextremes are cause foradjustment of these cleanli-ness codes.
Eaton products, as any com-ponents, will operate withapparent satisfaction in fluidswith higher cleanliness codesthan those described. Othermanufacturers will often rec-ommend levels above those
specified. Experience hasshown, however, that life ofany hydraulic component isshortened in fluids with high-er cleanliness codes thanthose listed below. Thesecodes have been proven toprovide a long, trouble-freeservice life for the productsshown, regardless of themanufacturer.
Fluids and Seals
The use of synthetic, fireresistant fluids requires avalve with special seals. Addprefix ‘‘F3’’ to the modelcode when phosphate esteroil or its blend are to beused. Add prefix ‘‘F6’’ to themodel code when water gly-col or water-in-oil emulsionsare to be used.
The pilot valve has ‘‘F3’’seals (Viton ) as standard. Allinternal seals of the main-stage are also ‘‘F3’’.Mounting face seals arestandard (Buna-N). ‘‘F6’’ pre-fix denotes special seals(Nitrile) throughout the valveassembly.
