is pilgrimage is proudly sponsored by the St. Josemaria Institute

e St. Josemaria Institute was founded in 2006 in the USA to spread devotion to Saint Josemaria Escriva and to promote his life and teachings to help people everywhere form personal friendships with God through their everyday lives in the middle of the world.

Dear Friends,

You are invited to join the St. Josemaria Institute and Mater Dei Tours to follow In the Footsteps of St. Josemaria Escriva on a pilgrimage to Spain, November 13 to 23, 2015.

Our pilgrimage will begin in Barcelona and include visits to the birthplace of St Josemaria Escriva (Barbastro), the places of his childhood and seminary years (Logroño and Zaragoza), and the sites of the founding and early years of Opus Dei in Madrid.

We will also visit the Marian Shrines of Montserrat, Our Lady of the Pillar, Sonsoles and Torreciudad— a very special pilgrimage opportunity to honor the Marian Year for the Family in Opus Dei. Additionally, 2015 marks the 40th anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine of Our Lady of Torreciudad.

A chaplain will accompany the group and each day will include Mass and time for private prayer as well as confession.

e pilgrimage will be a joyous occasion for deep prayer, personal conversion and thanksgiving to God for all His blessings, especially through the intercession of St Josemaria Escriva.

I hope that you will join us!

Sincerely,

Rev. James Socias President St. Josemaria Institute

The new shrine, built under the guidance of St Josemaria, was completed in 1975 and has become one of the most visited sites in the region. Begin the visit at Torreciudad, which in 2015 is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its dedication, with a brief tour of the shrine followed by time for prayer, confession, and Mass*. After a group lunch at a local mountain lodge, travel to the nearby town of Barbastro, the birthplace of St Josemaria. Day 5: After breakfast and Mass* at the Shrine of Torreciudad travel to Logroño for a special walking tour of the town where many significant events in the young life of St Josemaria took place: the home of the Escriva family, the place where St Josemaria saw “the footprints in the snow”, the location of the minor seminary, the Steel Bridge, the Church of Santiago, and the Cathedral of Logroño. This afternoon enjoy free time for lunch in Logroño and then depart to Zaragoza for dinner and overnight. (B, D)

Day 6: Begin the day with Mass* at the Marian Shrine of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar (Nuestra Señora del Pilar). The Basilica enshrines the pillar on which the Virgin Mary appeared to the apostle St James during his apostolic mission to Spain, also known as the “Camino de Santiago”. St Josemaria arrived in Zaragoza in 1920 for his studies at the Seminary of San Carlos and was known to visit the basilica every day entrusting himself to our Lady while waiting for a definitive answer regarding God’s will. St Josemaria was ordained to the priesthood at the Church of San Carlos in Zaragoza and celebrated his first Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. In 2015 we celebrate the 90th anniversary of both of the latter events in the life of St Josemaria. After visiting the basilica, take a walking tour of the town to see the site of the Seminary of San Carlos, the Escriva’s apartment and the Cathedral of Zaragoza.

This afternoon enjoy free time for lunch in Zaragoza and then depart for Madrid. After settling into the hotel enjoy a group dinner on the first of five nights in Madrid. (B, D)

M A DR I D Thursday, November 19

Day 7: Begin the first full day in Madrid with Mass* at the Cathedral of Madrid, “La Almudena.” At the Cathedral visit the shrine of our Lady of Almudena and the chapel dedicated to St Josemaria. Then, following in St Josemaria’s footsteps, walk through the historical center of Madrid enjoying stops at the Royal Palace, the Plaza Mayor, and the Pontifical Basilica of St. Michael, which is entrusted to Opus Dei. This afternoon enjoy free time for lunch in the historical center. After lunch, re-join the group for a panoramic bus tour of Madrid’s most famous sites: Puerta del Sol, Cibeles, Puerta de Alcala and Parque del Retiro. Along the famous Paseo del Prado, the bus tour will pause for a brief guided tour of the Museo del Prado, which houses one of the best art collections in the world. End this memorable first day in Madrid with a relaxing dinner at the hotel. (B, D)

M A DR I D Friday, November 20

Day 8: After breakfast embark on “part one” of the historical bus and walking tour of “St. Josemaria and the Streets of Madrid.” The guided tour today will include several locations in Madrid: the Plaza Alonso Martinez, location of “La Mezquita”; Calle Sagasta #33, location of the search by the soldiers; Santa Engracia #11, location of the Patronato de los Enfermos and the church; the apartment of the Escriva’s from September 1929 to May 1931; the location of St Josemaria’s encounter with Casimiro Morcillo, future Archbishop of Madrid-Alcala; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church; the location of the encounter with Isidoro Zorzano; the first “Academia DYA”; the Plaza de Chamberi; and other historical sites along the way. This afternoon enjoy free time for lunch and then continue the tour visiting the location of the foundation of Opus Dei and the Church of Our Lady of the Angels (whose bells St Josemaria heard on October 2, 1928). Mass* will be celebrated this afternoon at the Church of Our Lady of the Angels. End today’s tour with a visit to the Jorge Manrique Center, important to the history of Opus Dei, including the foundation of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross on February 14, 1943. Return to the hotel and enjoy a group dinner cherishing all the sites visited on this day. (B, D)

Day 10: After breakfast depart the hotel for a day to explore the historical cities of Avila and Segovia. Mass will be celebrated at the Church of Our Lady of Sonsoles where St Josemaria made a pilgrimage on May 2, 1935 that inspired the devotion of the Marian pilgrimage during the month of May. Mass* will be followed by a guided walking tour of Avila, the Medieval walled-city and birthplace of St Teresa of Jesus, reformer of the Carmelite Order and Doctor of the Church. From Avila, travel to Segovia to enjoy free time for lunch and to take in the views of the Alcazar Castle, the ancient Roman aqueduct, and the Cathedral of Segovia. After lunch visit the Carmelite Monastery and the tomb of St John of the Cross, co-reformer of the Carmelite Order and Doctor of the Church. On October 6, 1932, during a retreat at the Carmelite Monastery, St Josemaria was praying in the chapel of St John of the Cross and was inwardly moved to invoke the three archangels and the three apostles Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, and Saints Peter, Paul, and John. From that moment on he considered them the patrons of the different apostolates that would make up Opus Dei. From Segovia, return to Madrid for a farewell group dinner. (B, D)

Day 11: After breakfast checkout from the hotel and depart for Mass* at the Pontifical Basilica of St. Michael and a final blessing for a safe trip. After Mass arrive at Madrid’s Barajas Airport for the return flight to the USA. (B, M) Top Photo: Logroño
