Department News COOPERATIVE EDUCATION Janet Davis Subject Head Trudeau’s cooperative educa-tion students are enjoying a very successful semester. The highly individual nature of the co-op program allows each student to explore the career path unique to their inter-ests and skill set. Students are excelling in such place-ments as Markham-Stouffville Hospital, accounting placements, dental labs, computer hardware, local ele-mentary schools, graphic design, baker-ies, the Markham Airport, pharmacies, museums, retail and many more. Three of our students have been accepted to the Acceler-ated OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) pro-gram. This means they are completing their high school

diploma, are enrolled in col-lege classes (taking their Level One apprenticeship) and are working as signed appren-tices…all at the same time! Congratulations go to Cam-eron Ngo, Dorothy Chu and Neil Mistry for being accepted into this program. Cameron is currently attending Humber

College for 8 weeks as an electrician apprentice, Dorothy Chu is attending Seneca Col-lege every Thursday for Early Childhood Education and Neil Mistry will be attending Cen-tennial College for 8 weeks beginning April 6 as an Auto Service Technician Appren-tice. All three are to be com-mended for getting a head start

on their careers! We are continuing to expand our one credit Teacher’s As-sistant program for students interested in pursuing teaching as a career. This program al-lows students to experience a high school classroom as their placement. We couldn’t offer this amazing opportunity to

our students without the sup-port of the su-pervising teach-ers; our thanks go out to Mrs. Muller (ELL), Mrs. MacGre-gor, Mme. Ga-rofalo and Mme. McNair this se-mester. Students who will be entering the workplace next year can participate in a day long confer-ence on May 12, where work-

place skills, interviewing tech-niques and employability skills will be honed. If your son/ daughter would like to attend, they can contact the co-op of-fice in Room 118.

Tracy Chan shares stories of her workplace experience with students during the Co-op Career Fair, the culminating activity for the course.

Department News NEWS FROM ROOM 104 – DD PROGRAM Amrita Mulchand We’ve had a busy and success-ful 1st semester. Thank you goes out to our Work Experi-ence Placement Em-ployers, Aramark at P.E.T.H.S, Little Rouge P.S., Little Rouge Chil-dren’s Centre, Sec-ond Cup Coffee Co. on McCowan, The Village Grocer, Sal-vation Army Thrift Store and Your Dol-lar Store. In-school jobs included deliv-ering correspondence from the staff mail-room and picking up and de-livering mail from the post box across the road from our school. We had lots of experi-ence practicing our transit skills on trips which included our work placements. Community exploratory trips have included The Markham Fair (congrats to the winners in the crafts category!), Angus Glen Library, The Mandarin Buffet, Markville Mall and CBC Studio to see a live tap-ing session of The Steven & Chris Show. In October Town of Markham Councillor Carolina Moretti and her As-sistant Wendy took time from

their busy schedules, and came to the school to teach us how to play Bocce. Of particular excitement was our trip to see the Olympic Torch Relay in Markham. We also partici-pated in the SNAP basketball

tournament in the fall. Just prior to the holidays, we made crafts and sold them to raise funds for a Wii Sports and a popcorn machine. We thank Carole Pilote, Chris-tine Patrick and the Phys. Ed. Dept. for their generous donations. Thanks also to Markham Home Hardware, Aramark and Second Cup Cof-fee Co. for their donations too. Two of our students enjoyed Art class with Ms. Mac-Donald. Students built struc-tures and created string art in tech (thanks to the tech. staff who allowed us to use the

room and supplies) and joined Ms. Daleman’s class for two science lessons. Phys. Ed. With Ms. Shin again this year has been most beneficial to all. We were fortunate that Ms. Yun-Lee set aside time for us.

She taught us how to use Photo Story-and Comic Life on the computers and each student devel-oped two projects using the technol-ogy. We are cur-rently looking at MovieMaker. Ms. Yun-Lee and Ms. Shin will continue to teach us this se-mester – we are hoping to join

Ms.Antle as well in tech. Thanks to Mr. Bolden for in-cluding us in the school’s morning announcement team. Many thanks to our student volunteers and co-op students, who help our students inte-grate throughout the school and bring their special skills and friendships to our stu-dents.

Department News PHYSICAL EDUCATION Maurita Wong Subject Head Outdoor Education: Are you up for the challenge? Outdoor Education at Trudeau has arrived! This fall 20 stu-dents travelled to Northern Ontario for the ultimate ex-perience in out-door education, a four day ca-noe trip. With lots of learning, hard work and of course fun, the trip will live on in these stu-dents’ memo-ries forever. Look for the trip photos on the video monitor in the P.E. display case. Athletics This year’s Junior Girls’ Vol-leyball team rose to the top of their league quickly, winning 3 of 5 tournaments and finishing first in the East Area. The team members trained hard for 4 months, and easily won their first round playoff game. The final tournament proved to be very challenging, but the Tru-

deau girls came second in their pool, losing only to Sacred Heart. In an extremely intense and heart-breaking semi-final game, the girls narrowly lost the match that would have seen them in the Champion-ship game (17-15 for Mulock). With more determination than ever, the girls are aiming to bring home the banner next year. Good luck girls!

Coaches’ Corner Many thanks go out to Mr. Grieve for his contribution as both a boys’ and girls’ basket-ball coach during his time at Trudeau. With his passion for the game, Mr. Grieve inspired and pioneered the Trudeau basketball program and he will be greatly missed. We wish him the best at King City. Welcome to Mr. Kroetsch who

stepped in to takeover both the Jr. Boys’ Volleyball and Bas-ketball teams this year. We look forward to seeing your teams develop and thank you for jumping into Trudeau Ath-letics so enthusiastically. Thank you to all coaches who have volunteered their time this year: Ms. Nichol and Mr. Campoli, whose Sr. Girls’ Basketball team played in the

Champion-ship round, Mr. Weber and Ms. Kowalewski who coached the Senior Boys’ Volley-ball Team, Mr. Shin and Mr. Salavati who coached Boys’ Var-sity Soccer, Ms. Black,

Mrs. Davis and Ms. D’Angelo for coaching the swim team and training two of their swim-mers to compete at the Provin-cial level.

The Swim Team relaxes after a successful meet.

Department News HISTORY DEPARTMENT Kajal Joshi This year our history students had an exciting, once in a life-time opportunity to view the King Tut Exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). The Egyptian pharaoh reigned for approximately ten years and mysteriously died at the young age of nineteen. Many historians speculate that he was in fact mur-dered. His tomb was discovered, almost com-pletely intact, by Howard Carter in 1922. The exhibit featured the boy King’s golden sandals, jewel-lery, furniture, and other treas-ured items for the afterlife. Recently our philosophy classes had the opportunity to view the Body Worlds Exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre. Prior to their visit the students examined key questions in the course such as “What is art?” “What is beauty?” and “What is a person?” The exhibit en-abled them to further reflect on these questions as it featured

whole body plastinates, as well as, individual human organs in order to better understand the inner workings of the human body. Since the exhibit itself had been met with great controversy students were also asked to think critically about the ethical implications of hav-

ing such a display available for public viewing. In honour of Remembrance Day our grade ten history stu-dents sent postcards to Cana-dian soldiers serving overseas in Kandahar, as well as to sol-diers who sustained injuries and were recovering in the hospital. Our school recently received a letter of apprecia-tion from Sunnybrook Hospi-

tal acknowledging the heart felt messages sent by our stu-dents. Our grade ten history students also welcomed Mrs. Faigie Libman and Mr. Herb Goldstein to our school in No-vember to present a first hand account of what life was really like during the Holocaust.

This year’s fifties and sixties band-stand was another huge success. Con-gratulations to Am-rita Khemraj, Vanessa Prashad, and Neda Moghad-das for winning the title of best per-formance this year. The history depart-ment would like to thank Lillian Cheung, Teresa Kuo, Crystal Wang, and Amanda Mok for putting together a fabulous Remem-

brance Day display. We would also like to thank Raven Lewis, Kojo Koranteng-Asante Jr., Chevaun Cameron, and Sarah Lee for creating an amazing display for Black History Month.

Department News BUSINESS STUDIES E. Marotta-Kulcsar Subject Head “Trudeau Means Business!” This has been our motto this year, and it holds true today as it has in the past. Students study various courses offered in Accounting, Marketing, Economics, Capital Markets, Information Technology, and International Business. I am very pleased to announce our growth. This year, we have reached an all-time high of 33 Business sections. This includes four Computer Studies sections and four Business courses offered in French. What does this mean? This means that over 900 students will study Busi-ness by the end of this school year! During the first semes-ter, we have continued with our Student-of-the-Month ini-tiative, where worthy students receive acknowledgement and a certificate. We anticipate great results from up-coming O.B.E.A. Accounting, and Management Competitions that will be held in May. In short, Trudeau really does mean Business!

Once again, DECA Trudeau has done us proud! Our York Regional Competitions were held on Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Ryerson Univer-sity. Both Mrs. Daleman and I were very pleased with the outcome. A total of 13 rib-bons and two medals were awarded. Furthermore, a pen-nant was awarded to the school for obtaining 100%

membership! Our DECA Provincial Compe-titions were held in Toronto on February 8 and 9, 2010. We are thrilled to announce that Andrew Kulcsar and Brian Chan won medals for placing the in top 20 in the province in their respective categories. Way to Go, DECA Trudeau!

Department News DRAMA Sara MacGregor Subject Head Exciting stuff is happening this year in Drama. Our an-nual Cabaret Talent show was once again a great success with our first ever sold out show! Performers and audi-ence alike had a wonderful time in this holiday warm up event! In January, Ms. MacGregor’s grade 9 drama class ran a video conference with Stonebridge P.S. and Castlemore P.S. through the ABEL transition team for their summative per-formance. This was a first time experiment performing for video and a live audience at the same time. We know we were successful with some aspects of the event, and also learned a lot about what can be improved for next time. January was also when we hosted the semi annual MOSAIC showcase which went off without a hitch. The grade 10’s show-cased selected scenes from their summative Anthology presentations and then the

Sears Production course ran their show of A Mistake in Heaven, written and directed by grade 12 student Nadya Khoja and stage managed by Victoria Dickson. This show was also toured to other local high schools for focus group performances---a great learn-ing experience for all in-volved! In February, the production

course continued on with A Mistake in Heaven for the Sears Ontario Drama Festival and performed with excellence on February 18th when we also hosted Bur Oak Secondary School and Richmond Green Secondary School. We are excited to hear about the re-sults from the festival in March. None of the events that occur as part of the drama depart-ment can happen without the

Trudeau Theatrics Council. These students co-ordinate all dramatic events at Trudeau and are strong leaders in the school: Nadya Khoja as Presi-dent, Nika Baghaie as Vice-President, Michelle Lai as Treasurer, Kelly Yuen as Sec-retary and members at large Rion Chow, Michelle Lee, Brittney Rogers, Nicole Katsi-nos, Monique Gill, Danielle Lillico, Aparna Yogaselvam,

Sahar Jafrani, Shakeem Singh, Krrisha Gnanach-chandran, and Keerthiga Gnanach-chandran The department is ever growing and we are thrilled to have teaching with us as always the fabulous Ms.

Antle, and are equally as thrilled to be welcoming back into the department, Mr. Sul-man. Last but not least we are very excited to be welcome on board Ms. Gillmore, who did a short but very successful stint for Ms. MacGregor back in the fall.

Ms. MacGregor and the cast of New Canadian Kid speak to the audi-ence following their video conference performance.
