After the most recent interest rate raise in mid-Mach, The Federal Reserve has signaled that it is likely to continue raising interest rates both this year and next. Because - generally speaking - bond yields decrease as interest rates in-crease, you may be wondering how to manage your bonds.Here are a few smart strategies:

• For Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS), the TreasuryDepartment uses the Consumer Price Index to adjust the principal forinflation (or deflation) twice a year. At maturity, the investor gets eitherthe inflation-adjusted principal or the original principal, whicheveris higher.

• Invest in single corporate bonds. You can structure this based onincome needs, and then you’re never forced to sell. You can simplyhold them to maturity. And keep in mind you don’t want junk bonds –you want quality-bonds that have an AAA or AA rating according toMoody, or Standard and Poor.

• Purchase single municipal bonds, which are often “triple-tax free” – theysometimes avoid local, state, and federal taxes.

• Consider a bond ladder, which is a structure where you own individualbonds with, as an example, 20% percent of the bonds that mature intwo years, 20% in 3 years, 20% in 4, 20% in 5, and 20% in 6. The idea isthat in each year, as 20% percent of the ladder matures, this amount isreinvested in a new five-year bond.
