8 December 2013

Mel and Linda Vogt-National Family of the Year 2013-2014

Happy Holidays!!!! Just to fill you in a little since last month, we had a very good time at the Nebraska GWTA Fall Follies in November. There were some very good meetings, lots of games, and enjoyable chats with members from all the chapters (missed some of you though). There was a dress-up parade and best costume award, followed by dinner, a roast (got me again), and some surprising announcements. We were very sad to hear that our Nebraska State Director, Dave Telford, was resigning his position. We will miss him in that capacity but really appreciate the wonderful job he did. Our next surprise was that his replacement as Nebraska State Director is our own Chapter Z member, Peggy Hakanson. Peggy has been a GWTA member for 19 years, has held several positions, and brings a lot of enthusiasm with her to this new position. Just take a look at her costume for Fall Follies. So, how was your Thanksgiving? We enjoyed the day with family and friends. Of course, we all ate too much, as is always the case. You can have turkey and dressing at another other time of year but it just seems like it is much better on Thanksgiving. I know, some of you lucky devils have weather that allows you to still ride but many of us have to give up that pleasure for a few months. We sure hope you have taken the time to properly store your bikes for the winter. If you are not

surewhat steps you need to take in order to do that, please have a talk with your Chapter or State Safety Director. They can provide the needed information on how to properly store your bike until the next riding season.

Peggy “Twinkle Toes” Hakanson

The winter season is here and everywhere we look we see signs of Christmas. This is the time of year we really love. It is kind of a go-go-go but everything is fun and family. I hope you are enjoying the winter, the festivities of the season, and the time spent with loved ones as much as we are. Mel and I want to wisheach of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

This is fall color in Michigan

Submitted by State Directors, Ron and Terry Did you have fun and adventures in motorcycling during in 2013? Well, here comes November and likely the end of the riding season. If you attended most of the Michigan GWTA calendar events that included fun runs, state rallies, national rally and dinner runs, you have nearly reached 10,000 miles this year (just guessing). With that thought, most of this occurs because of the exercise of planning and you. What a terrific entrance into the Michigan business and planning meeting. This is open to all GWTA Michigan members and your chance to know, as well as provide input. Listed below is more information. Remember, every dark and stormy night brings us another day closer to 2014 riding season. Let’s start the planning for next year!

Michigan fall color - great weather goes with special friends, good food, spectacular color, m/c touring and fun events. That is how I sum up GWTA Michigan Fall Color 2013. We started the Michigan fall color trips in 2007. The event was organized to be a participant choice and no cost function other than your personal expenses. It has been successful because of you, your support and participation. We appreciate the help that we get from many who give us a hand with the extras. This year we had just over 70 attendees and we hope all enjoyed the weekend. We did a survey on thoughts for fall color 2014. The responses leaned toward Gaylord about 2 to 1. Thus, we will explore the Gaylord area for a place that will meet our needs and requirements for next year.

19TOURING NEWS

Hi Everyone, First, I would like to wish everyone a Very Happy Holiday Season.

Second, I want all of you to put yourself on the top of the Christmas Gift List with Safety on your mind. Here is my suggestion for your Gift List for both you and your passenger – you will see why I use “passenger” later in my article.

Christmas List #1 Item for the Rider:

It may have been many years since you have taken a MSF Course of any kind. In most places the easiest class to enroll in is the Basic Rider Course (BRC). Now you may say, this is for beginners and while that may be true, the BRC will help you rekindle the basic knowledge for safe riding. I have found that many folks who have been long time riders find the BRC helps to break bad habits we all get into when we ride. Some people may object to the cost of this class but I would ask what is our safety and the safety of those we ride with worth? I don’t think we can really put a price on being safe. Christmas List #1 for the Passenger:

When I talk to folks about riding and ask them is they will carry a passenger, I always make two recommendations.

1. Take a Safety Class before you buy a bike. By taking the class a potential rider may discover they really don’t want to actually ride or have difficulty with the process before making the investment in a bike.

2. MY SECOND RECOMMENDATION IS FOR THE PASSENGER – Have your passenger take the BRC. This does two things for them:

a. You will find the passenger has a much greater appreciation of you as a rider is they have been through the training.

b. If something happens to the rider a trained passenger knows about the controls and what to do in the case of an emergency.

By having your passenger take the BRC they become a true CO-RIDER and not just a passenger.

Now if you want to really help the group you ride for the New Year put this on your Gift List: Find an MSF site in your area, contact them, and see it you can get your group signed up for one of the many advanced classes offered.

Let’s all make 2014 our Year for Safety and get involved in a class at any level. Doug Green National RED

Part 12: Shrike 2! Last month Dave set out to design and build a safer motorcycle… The Shrike and I drove 78,000 miles in this configuration, without bodywork, until the motor went BANG at the top of second gear on a freeway onramp. A period of storage (along with a divorce and change of employment) ended in 2000 when a crashed BMW K1200RS with 8,200 miles on the clock became available. I decided to explore the upper end of the performance envelope, and began design and reconstruction. Off came everything aft of the firewall, the “new” bike was stripped of un-needed hardware and moved into place, and connecting structure was made.

Photo: Dave Norton

It was at that point that, as sometimes happens, “life got in the way”. Construction of the BMW refit for the Shrike was well underway in October 2000 when wife Ellie and I took our annual backpacking adventure in Yosemite. At 8,500 feet altitude, 6 trail miles from Tuolumne Meadows, I had a generalized gran mal seizure. No previous symptoms or family history. A LifeFlight chopper ride to Mammoth Lake then Reno got me to an MRI and CAT scan, where they diagnosed a cryptic cavernous malformation in my brain: a knot of blood vessels that decided to bleed out. Treatment comprised a daily dose of Dilantin, to continue indefinitely.

Photo: Ellie Gregory

Fortunately, I tolerated (and still do) the medication well, after several weeks of comparative lethargy. I eased back into the Shrike project by creating an AutoCAD layout of the new version: 20 December 2013

EVER WONDER...???? Something to read to ease your stress through the holidays!

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin? Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed? Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'? Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word? Why is it that doctors and attorneys call what they do 'practice'?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavoring, and dish washing liquid made with real lemons? Why is the man who invests all your money, practicecalled a broker? Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food? Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes? You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff??

Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke? Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters? Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage?

Work also continued on a second scale model, used to work out the shape of the bodywork:

I found it easier to work with AutoCAD and balsa wood than metal during this time…

After a six-month hiatus during which my brain reconstructed its burnt-out wiring, construction on Shrike 2 continued. All my attempts to get the motor running, once installed, were unsuccessful, and for another six months I worked around the problem. At the end, when everything else was done and it just HAD to work, I connected the battery once again, said a little prayer and hit the switch. My relief was indescribable as it immediately settled into an even idle. No trace of the problem (either Shrike-wise or brain-wise) has surfaced since. By July ‟03 Shrike 2 was on the road again:

The bump in power from 65 to 130 changed the character of the car “substantially”. With 65 hp I could toss it about freely at full chat, with a minimum of concern over rear traction. With 130 hp, driving became a much more serious endeavor, demanding constant attention to the very real potential connection between my right foot and oblivion. But oooooh, the power! There are times when too much power is just enough. With the new powerplant came a semi-enclosed body. The combination of reduced aerodynamic drag and an engine that was just loafing along most of the time produced essentially the same fuel consumption as before, around 36 mpg in town. The enclosed engine space created a cooling problem. The two air inlets didn‟t provide sufficient airflow through the twin BMW coolant radiators until I made three changes: the radiators were moved down close to the inlet, scoops were added to grab more air, and screened air outlets were added to get the air out again. The large oil cooler used with the Yamaha setup remained. All three coolers have individual fans. During development of the cooling system we ran an SCCA Solo II autocross to evaluate performance on a tight twisting closed course. I was surprised and a bit disappointed with the results. Acceleration out of the turns is limited by the limited rear wheel traction. In steady-state cornering we could hold .9G, but couldn‟t “hook up” exiting turns.

Photo: Dave Norton

A later Track Day event at the Streets of Willow course at Willow Springs Raceway in Mojave showed similar results. On these events passing was allowed only on the straights, and with 10 pounds per horsepower we were very hard to pass! We could just top 100 mph on the front straight.

An incident on the road vindicated one aspect of the Shrike‟s design. The rear disc brake locked under hard braking at about 65 mph, resulting in a slow 180° half spin off into the weeds. True to my earlier calculations we didn‟t overturn. A later recurrence of a locked rear resulted in a rebuilt caliper and the realization that the spin wasn‟t due to pilot error.
