STEM at HomeDear ___________________,
At school, we have been learning that engineers design many of the things we use in our daily lives. These things are called technologies.
I learned that: _______________________________________________________
My favorite part of the lesson was: ______________________________________
At home, we can watch a short video called “Preventing Back Pain From Backpacks” about the problems backpacks can cause.
Search “Inside Science Preventing Back Pain” to find the Inside Science video at www.insidescience.org/content/preventing-back-pain-backpacks/812.
After we watch the video together, we can figure out if my backpack is too heavy! We will need a bathroom scale and a calculator for this part.
__________ lbs. = weight of my full backpack
__________ lbs. = my weight
__________ = 10% of my weight (my weight x .10)
Conclusion: Is my full backpack heavier than 10% of my weight?
¨ Yes ¨ No
If yes, my backpack is too heavy!
What I can do to help make my backpack safer for me to carry:
