Architecture

PicPort®-Elite frame grabbers are capable of digitizing multiple NTSC/PAL color analog video

signals. Compacting 16 frame grabbers into 1 card, up to 16 cameras can be digitized simultane-

ously. The resultant high quality images can be further conditioned in real time and transferred to

display and/or multiple memory locations in the host computer over the high bandwidth PCI-X or

PCI-Express buses. PicPort®-Elite is cost effective, compact and high performance, meeting the

demanding requirements of diverse security, image processing and machine vision applications.

Overview

A rich array of on-board features includes 16 analoginputs with 10 bit A/D converters, color decoders,interpolated scaling in x/y axes, video movementdetection, up to 512 MB frame buffer and PCI-X,PCI-Express ×1 or ×4 bus interfaces with up to 32 DMAchannels. Additional optional features for OEMs are2nd scaled output per camera, analog video differentialamplifiers, analog video display and video compressionaccelerator.

PicPort®-Elite architecture is user friendly, employinginnovative re-programmable Flash memory and FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) technologies. Thisallows the user to reconfigure the onboard hardwarethrough software updates. The Flash memory can alsobe used for security coding to prevent unauthorizedcopying of user application proprietary technology.

PicPort®-Elite supports 3 different interface con-nector categories:• Two HD26 connectors support 8 differential

composite video signal pairs each (optionally 2 pieces of 10cm 8-way coax cable female BNCflying lead cable assemblies are supplied).

• One BNC connector supports analog composite video output

• One 16-pin header supports analog RGB video output (option)

Analog Video Digitizers

PicPort®-Elite features 16 high quality video digitizersthat convert NTSC/PAL composite analog video intodigital data. Each digitizer consists of a 10-bit A/D con-verter (which converts in real time the analog signal toYCbCr format digital data) which samples the videoinputs at 2 times the Nyquist sampling rate. Each A/Dhas an analog 2:1 MUX. Horizontal/vertical sync lockingsupports weak, noisy and unstable video signals. Colorsaturation can be adjusted via the chrominance gain,offset and hue registers. Selectable automatic gain con-trol compensates for reduced amplitudes caused byhigh frequency suppression in the video signal.

Image Scaling

A high quality horizontal and vertical down scaler isavailable for each digitizer, providing true down scaling

of each video image, utilizing a mathematical interpo-lation method independently along both X and Y axes,resulting in an output image free from any significantloss of detail. Image cropping is also available.

Field/Frame Rate Selection

Each scaled video channel on PicPort®-Elite can beindividually programmed to grab at a desiredfield/frame rate. Selectable grab rates range from ma-ximum (i.e. every field) down to 1 field every 16 fields(minimum field rate).

Video Movement Detection

Video Movement Detection is supported by dividinga field into 144 mask detection regions (12×12) foreach decoder (see diagram below). Each of thesewindows can detect movement and generate aninterrupt by detecting the change in luminancelevel of the adjacent 2 video fields (the motion ina specific region can be ignored by controlling re-gister settings).The motion detection algorithm can be adjusted viaseveral register programmable attributes to achieveoptimal motion velocity and sensitivity for applica-tion requirements (e.g. level, spatial & temporalsensitivity).

Data Storage and Transfer

Frame Buffer

PicPort®-Elite features a DDR DRAM interface and anon-board frame buffer with up to 512 MB. Anadvanced frame buffer controller is provided to man-age the multitude of data streams passing betweenthe digitizers and the PCI bus DMA controller. Its capa-bilities include the following:• Video data FIFO (First-In-First-Out) full-frame circular

buffer, ensuring that integrity is maintained for all video data, independent of operating system interaction with the PCI bus (up to 16 field buffer depth).

• Interlocking of input and output transfers to ensure only correct data is output, irrespective of the diffe-rent data rates and latencies of the video streams.

• General storage memory for DMA page tables.• Low delay latency of camera data to PC memory.

DMA Controller

A high performance and flexible Direct Memory Access(DMA) controller is essential to meet the needs of mod-ern image processing applications. The digitized and con-ditioned video data is transferred via DMA directly to theCPU and/or video memory without intermediate storagein system memory and with no CPU intervention (i.e. allDMA table data is stored in the on-board frame buffermemory). Up to 32 DMA channels are supported, whichcan be allocated in various combinations to the imagedata channels:• Up to 32 simultaneous channels (2 per camera). • Region-of-interest selection on each DMA Channel. • Frame sequencing up to 4096 frames into PC memory

rotating buffer. • Low latency video data transfer starts transmitting

image information from the frame buffer to host after completed acquisition of one image line.

Host Bus Interface

Models for PCI-X (5V and 3V slots are supported) andPCI-Express are available. 32 DMA channels are available(i.e. 2 channels per camera to support the dual indepen-dently scalable outputs from each decoder).Form factor is full height and half length PCI:4.2" (10.7 cm) × 6.6" (16.7 cm).

Flash Memory Controller

The on-board flash memory stores the various configurationsof the board that are loaded at power-up and also any soft-ware technology security information (software dongle).

Color Space Conversion

PicPort®-Elite can transform the digitized data into a vari-ety of color formats:

Image Scaling – 2nd scaled output per camera (OEMOption)As an OEM Option, a 2nd independent scaler is also avail-able for each digitizer, simplifying applications requiring2 different versions of the same video (e.g. grab to me-mory and display at different scaling factors). This optionrequires the "RTF" models.Analog Video Differential Amplifiers (OEM Option)PicPort®-Elite provides differential input amplifiers foreach video input (i.e. useful for long coax runsand/or noisy video applications). ±5 V commonmode swing is supported. Each video input iscompletely isolated on both signal andground signals.Analog Video Display (OEM Option)PicPort®-Elite features a high quality videoencoder that converts a display monitor digi-tal output to NTSC/PAL composite or RGB out-puts. Video Compression Accelerator (OEM Option)On-board MPEG4 compression is available for each videoinput. The compression is hardware based and requiresno host CPU processing bandwidth. This option requiresthe "RTF" models.

Software

Driver Software

OEMs can develop their own applications using a full-featured API driver/library for Windows 2000/XP, 64-bitWindows, Linux and VxWorks. LV-SDS (Leutron VisionSoftware Development Suite) is a software develop-ment package that allows full control of PicPort®-Elite.The software suite consists of Daisy (the basic softwareinterface for PicPort®-Elite), Camera Editor (easy interac-tive setup of standard and non-standard cameras),DRAL (a library for handling specific time-critical tasks),Orchid (high level DLL or OCX library for quick andeasy design of PicPort®-Elite applications), TWAIN Driverand Video for Windows (provides a simple interface

between PicPort®-Elite hardware and other office andimage manipulation programs, such as MS Office,CorelDRAW, etc.). The software products come com-plete with a set of demonstration programs and addi-tional examples with source code as a guide to theprogrammer in developing particular applications.

Third Party Software

Several well-known third party packages for real-timeimage processing and analysis are also supported.These packages include HALCON, ActivVisionToolsand others.
