Message from the PresidentGiving Thanks

The point of T ha n k sg iv i ng (and the Holi-day season) is to remember the things we should be grateful for. It's a special time to give thanks... not just for the

obvious, like food, but for the thousands

of great moments and the many bless-ings we receive during the year.

That's not always as easy as it sounds. We tend to remember bad things much more easily than good. But with a little work you can make

thankfulness an everyday habit. It's a skill that will benefit you throughout the year.

Don't focus on what you don't have. Focus on what you do have. For exam-ple: "I'm so fortunate to have a warm place to sleep in the winter." "I'm so fortunate to live in a safe neighborhood where I can take walks." "I'm so for-tunate to have a good job with a good company."

Think about people you've known that have had a influence on you. They can be family, friends or simply peo-ple that you've read about or seen on television. Think about people who pushed to become what you are today. Now think about the things you ac-complished because of them. Did you finish something because they said that you couldn't? Did you get better at something because they made fun of

Alex Saulus

REMEMBER TO GIVE this Holiday Season to help poor and suffering souls in our community. Your gift today will let someone in desperate need know they haven't been forgotten

YES, I Want to help provide food, shelter and Holiday joy for needy people In our community:

$30 for Holiday family food box

$35 to help provide toys for needy children

$50 to help feed and shelter a hurting family. $____ to help as much as possible.

you when you did it badly? Even nega-tive forces in your life can be hidden blessings, worthy of your gratitude.

Think about the animals that have given you joy: Dogs that love you no matter what, cats that (when they want to) think your lap is the best place to nap.

Think about the places that make you smile: A favorite hangout, great restaurant, an exciting city, a great spot from which to view the sky, a hill that you once rolled down. Give thanks for all these things.

Now try to pass it on. Real gratitude involves action. Lend a hand. Pitch in. Make a gift. Give your time. Listen. Give back as often as you can. Even a friendly greeting can make all the dif-ference in the world.

Also on tap are the complete repaving of Rosemead Boulevard from the city border at Telegraph Road north-bound to Rex Road ($750,000) and the upgrade of Telegraph Road with safety medians and new sig-nals for better traffic flow.

Our Number 1 Priority of en-hanced Law Enforcement services ($3.5 million) has resulted in major crime reduction. We also appreci-ate Supervisor Gloria Molina for funding the special Vandalism Enforcement Team (VET) program that has contributed to the near-elimination of unsightly graffiti throughout the city.

Speaking of partnerships, we also are thankful for the Central Basin Municipal Water District for their comprehensive plans to install recycled-purified water pipelines on three major arterial streets be-ginning with Mines Avenue ($3.5 million). This ambitious project is part of a major pipeline project funded by the Southern Califor-nia Water Replenishment District (WRD) and the County Flood Control District. The other two lines include Beverly Boulevard ($8 million), and the Sports Arena-Bicentennial Park Complex ($2.1 million).

in 2009, such Part 1 Crime statistics (burglary, robbery, shop lifting, etc.) show an additional 12% reduction! Most importantly, we have gone from double-digit (15) murders in 2005 to only 2 in 2008. Thus far in 2009, we had almost made a full year of No Murders until the ho-micides at the pizza parlor’s illegal motorcycle show a couple of months back. Combined with our $3.5 mil-lion increase in our Sheriff’s con-tract during this period, which al-lowed for specialized enforcement units, these results have more than justified our City Council’s deci-sion to approve the administration’s directions. Thank you Pico Rivera (68%); you made this possible!

to burglars. Especially during the holiday season, he stated that putting purchases in the trunk of your car is the safest way to go while shopping.

Rothans also warned owners of large SUVs that stealing third row seats has become popular with burglars as they are unmarked and cannot be indentified.

Capt. Rothans also gave a few tips for homeowners to help them avoid becoming statistics. For example, since most burglaries are committed during the daytime hours when most people are at work, Rothans advised leaving a radio on to create the impression that someone may be home. Burglars, he noted, don’t like to take chances when they think someone may be home.

Mayor Bob Archuleta also spoke at the luncheon. He told Chamber members that since the elections are over, “Now is the time to reunite and let’s go forward.” The mayor suggested that everyone reach out to family and friends to help continue the Chamber’s new member push. Over 35 new members have joined the Chamber in the past few months.

full-time five-days-a-week city crews ($350,000) and our week-end contract crew (federal grant), has totally cleaned up our city and generated over $300,000 in Court Ordered Restitution of which more than $75,000 has been collected to date. Most cities are happy to collect 10% on these fines. Pico Rivera is netting 25% to 30% an-nually.

No other City in this region, or even the entire County of Los Angeles, has repaved more streets than Pico Rivera on a per-capita basis. We Are On The Move!
