Physics 031, Physics for Engineers I, syllabus

Brief description: Fundamentals of classical mechanics including oscillations and waves. Withlab. Accompanying optional problem-solving session: Phys 030.

    Prerequisites: Math 21.

    Textbook:

The standard textbook is "Physics for scientists and engineers," 2nd Ed. by Randell Knight.

There is a package of the textbook bundled with MasteringPhysics, with ISBN 125642059X(Also ISBN13-978125642590) containing the text through Ch37, MasteringPhysics access code,

student tutorials, and the student workbook. Note: it is the 2nd

    edition. The MasteringPhysics

    should include eText.

For those who love to work with a monitor or an e-pad and like to solely browse over eText,

Standalone MasteringPhysics code only with eText ISBN 0321641299.

You must have the MasteringPhysics access code for this class! You can log on to

http://www.masteringphysics.com once you have the student access code. Our course is

SUMPHYS031YANG and you need to register to that course for our class.

    Instructor: J. Yang

    Cook Building, A525; Phone: 656-0061; email:[email protected].

    Schedule:Lectures: TRF, 10:4512:00 AM.

LabsLabs provide good opportunities to have hands-on experience. Please follow guidance and rules

by your lab instructors. An instruction handout for each lab will be available on the blackboard

prior to the lab. You must be on time and have good team spirit.

    Lab schedule:

Lectures:In lectures we will concentrate on concept building and problem solving. We will also work on

    example similar to homework assignments.

Exams & Homework assignments. There are three mid-term exams and a final exam, all close-booked. Exams are based on

homework assignments, examples in lectures, and materials in labs. An equation sheet will be

provided for each exam. The equation sheet will be posted on the blackboard (course materials).

Homework assignments with deadlines are all posted on SUMPHYS031YANG course

page on MasteringPhysics site. You must be diligent to do and finish each assignment before its

deadline. Assignments will be available for you to study after the deadline. No credit for anyattempt after the deadline.

No excuse for missing any exam.

    Exam schedule:Exam I (kinematics, chaps 1 - 4): 6/19/12, Tuesday, in class.

Exam II (dynamics, chaps 5 - 8): 7/3/12, Tuesday, in class.Exam III (momentum and energy, chaps 911): 7/17/12, Tuesday, in class.

Final Exam (inclusive): 8/3/12, Friday, in class.

Reading:You should read the materials in the textbook before the class. The lecture will be more useful if

you have also attempted homework problems.

    Grades:

The average of lab reports counts 20%. The average of all homework assignments togethercount 20%. Each problem in homework assignments counts 1 point. Four exams count 60%

    with each of 15%.

The very first homework assignment, entitled Introduction to MasteringPhysics, counts 1% as

    bonus.

Exam and lab grades will be posted on the blackboard. Homework grades are recorded on theMasteringPhysics.

Other:University regulations concerning academic honesty apply to all work in this course.
