Walking Injuries Lost Time Injury Due to Broken Ankle

• Lost balance and fell• Contributing factors: surface conditions & footwear

Surface Conditions• Be aware of where you are walking

- Familiar path• Slippery or uneven surfaces

- Weather conditions- Unfamiliar path

Footwear• Suitable for conditions• Suitable for amount and places you will walk

Carrying Objects – Weight and Bulk• Reduces balance, changes center of gravity• Block view of where you are stepping

Injury Reduction – Zero Injuries BNL, DOE and Physics Department Goal Who is Responsible for Reducing Injuries?

• Each of us – our own personal safety• All of us – look out for conditions that may impact others

Largest Contributing Factor to Injuries?• Belief that you can’t or won’t be hurt

What Can You Do?• Before each activity, ask yourself

- What personal protective equipment (PPE) should I use?- What is the worst thing that can go wrong?- What is the most likely injury while doing this job?- What have I done to prevent the above from happening?

- Proper PPE? Following procedures? Attitude/alertness?- Is there a better or safer way to do this?

- If there is tell someone – feedback!
