Unit 1: Introduction to matterChapter 1: Properties of MatterWhat is physical science? It is the study of matter and energy. It has two main branches: chemistry and physics.

Chemistry: is the study of the structure and the makeup of matter and the changes matter undergoes.Physics: deals with the study of energy and matter and how they interact.

Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space. (air is matter too!)

*Plasma is the 4th state of matter. It is rare on Earth, but it is plentiful in the other parts of the universe. Plasma is made out of small, electrically charged particles. It is found in stars. How does matter change state?

Freezing: change from a liquid to a solid Melting: change from a slid to a liquid Evaporation: change from liquid to a gas at the surface of the liquid Condensation: change from a gas to a liquid Sublimation: change from a solid directly to gas

What are physical and chemical changes of matter?Physical change:

Although some extensive properties (like shape, phase, etc.) of the material change, the material itself is the same before and after the change. The change can be “undone.” Ice melting is a physical change because it can be reversed and the material does not change. Volume and color changing is also physical change.

Chemical change:The substances present at the beginning of the change are not present at the end; new substances are formed. The change cannot be “undone." For instance, Iron turns into rust once it comes in contact with water.
