    1/3

Know about the different forms of lipids and fats (LDL VLDL HDL TGs FFAs Cholesterol etc) and theircharacteristics.

See topic 5 and also 10. What is the energy balance equation?

What happens when you have too little or too much of any one of the macronutrients?

What are the DRI of different macronutrients? (You just did the report!)

    What Hormones increase appetite?

What Hormones decrease appetite? (What message does Leptin give and from where, what messagedoes Neuropeptide Y give and from where) [Obesity Lecture]

What are the different types/locations of body fat and what differences are there between women andmen?

What are the risks associated with body fat of different types and overall? You should know what

increases risk or causes all of the diseases covered.

Know the systems covered in Topic 14:Energy systems, sources, carb metabolism, aerobic/anaerobicenergy, glycolysis, oxidative metabolism, fat metabolism, Lipid Fuel Sources, lipogenesis increase ordecrease (including knowing the roles of the hormones and enzymes involved)

Know everything about LPL and HSL.

Which enzyme does muscle use to break down circulating TGs to store fat in the muscle (=LPL) vsmuscle stored TG break down to result in burning of FA (=HSL)?

Which enzyme does adipose tissue use to break down circulating TGs to result in more stored fat (=LPL)vs adipose tissue break down of stored TGs resulting in circulating FA to be burned for energy in muscle

    (=HSL)?

    What stimulates HSL?

    What inhibits HSL?

Please see the table on page 17 for the distinctions between the common fats. What is and how does theconnection of fat intake and cancer work?

Know heart function and artery structure and diseases affecting

What are endothelial cells (location, function, interaction with other tissues or fluids?)

Know how ACSM recommendations work in terms of Frequency, Duration, Intensity (p57) and what theyare for cardio, strength, etc.

Know about heart rate, what is cardiac output?

What do each of the training types do at various training ranges of %HR, Reps, etc

What specific adaptations happen from different types of training?

    2/3

What are they, why are they each desirable? (i.e. do you want to increase or decrease - Lactatethreshold? Maximal heartrate? Exercise heartrate?)

What training type will accomplish the desired result.Know your muscle physiology!

Types of muscle and optimal function as well as definitions of different types of muscle action.

How do you gain muscle? Lose body fat? Reduce storage of bodyfat?

What factors influence energy contribution during exercise? What does each factor do?High proteinintake does not cause kidney disease in healthy people. If you read the powerpoint on this point, you willnote the use of the words susceptible people and the mention of pre-existing disease states. On page 56there are some Types of Muscle Action mentioned, here are some examples:

Concentric : shortening the muscle (i.e. curling a weight up with the biceps)

Eccentric : lengthening the muscle (i.e. lowering a weight down with the biceps)

Isometric :no change in joint angle (i.e. holding the biceps muscle in a static flexed pose)

On page 47, know the Energy Systems (know both names for each one)

ATP-PC System/immediate ? is the fastest, short duration energy good for up to 10 seconds.

Glycolytic System/Short-term ? is referring to anaerobic glycolysisgood for

Know which type of muscle should be trained by resistance training.

Know the DRI values for protein and different fat, eg, sat/ unsat...

Know about major fuel source for energy at rest/ diff level of exercise.

Know about factors that affect resting heart rate,. training sensitive zone heart rate, max heart rate.

    What is metabolic syndrome?

    Nitrogen balence, transamination.
