This syllabus is subject to change. I will make every effort to notify you in advance about any changes.

Course DescriptionPrerequisites: MATH 150B; PHYS 226 or 220B. Recommended Corequisite or Preparatory: MATH 280.Third course of a sequence of courses intended primarily for physical science majors. Calculus-based courseon thermodynamics, waves and modern physics.

Dates, Time and PlaceClasses will be held Mondays and Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 3:40 PM in Live Oak Hall 1124 from Jan.23 to May 12.Final Exam will be held on Monday, May 15 at 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in Live Oak Hall 1124.In-Class Exams will be announced one week in advance.

TextbookYou will need Chapters 19-22 and 39-46 of Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 9th Edition by RaymondA. Serway and John W. Jewett. There are several options to obtain these chapters.

• WebAssign will not be used in this course, so you do not need access to this.• Do not buy Volume 5. It is missing Chapter 39 Relativity.

Office HoursOffice hours will be 1:00-2:00 PM on Tuesdays, 10:00-11:00 AM on Wednesdays, and 2:00-3:00 PM on Fridays.Appointments outside office hours may also be setup via email.

• Your lowest scoring Homework assignment will be excluded from your final grade.• Final grades in course will be assigned according to plus/minus grading system using the gap-distribution

method.

Pre-class QuestionnairesBefore each class, reading material and a short questionnaire will be assigned. The questionnaires are dueone hour before class and are graded based on participation (submitting an answer). Select anonymized andrepresentative answers will be discussed in class.

HomeworkHomework assignments will generally be assigned every second class except if there is a conflict with one ofthe midterms or otherwise explicitly noted. Grading will be done according to the rubric posted on Moodle.Late assignments will be graded as zero. Extensions may be granted if requested at least 24 hours beforethe deadline.You are encouraged to work collaboratively on homework assignments but you are required to individuallyprepare your final solutions. Copying will not be tolerated.

Exams and QuizzesThere will be one in-class review quiz, two in-class exams and one exam during the scheduled final examtime slot. Exams will be in-class and taken home. The in-class component will be completed individuallywithout discussing with other students. The take-home component will be completed collaboratively, due24 hrs after the in-class component is complete, and worth 10% of the exam grade.The in-class review quiz is tentatively scheduled for February 6. In-class exams are tentatively scheduled forMarch. 6 and April. 12. These dates are subject to change.

Academic DishonestyAcademic Dishonesty, as defined in the CSUN Course Catalog (http://www.csun.edu/catalog/policies/academic-dishonesty/), will not be tolerated. This includes cheating, fabrication and plagiarism or thefacilitation of such behavior.

MoodleAll assignments, solutions, grades and announcements will be posted on the Moodle (http://Moodle.csun.edu/) site for this course. There is also a calendar for the course, which can be imported into your favoritecalendar software, and will have important dates, including all classes, due-dates and exams.
