Phushion Out & AboutMac Miller Album Launch.

We were lucky enough to go along to Mac Miller’s first UK show for around 2 years, and we weren’t dis-appointed. The venue picked for his return was Plan B in Brixton, Lon-don. It has a fairly small capacity in comparison to the Brixton Acad-emy but that made this show very

Professor Green Gig.

We took the hour long trip over to Guildford to see Professor Green perform live at G Live. He was sup-ported by the always great Mikill Pane who got the show started with a few of his older tracks and his new singles. In between his and Professor Green’s set, his DJ, IQ

intimate. With everyone close to the stage, and the majority with their phones out ready for Mac’s appearance you could tell this was going to be special. Mac started off laid back, much like the live videos he had put out in the weeks before the gig, but you could tell he wanted to get more energetic and he soon did. We were even fortunate enough to see him play guitar, something a lot of his fans didn’t realise he could do. All in all it was an amazing occasion, we enjoyed ourselves and we can’t wait to hear and see what Mac does towards the end of this year...

and Felix Billion got the crowd jumping. With his new album ‘Growing Up In Public’ out very soon, he performed a mixture of new tracks from the album and some of his older songs that everyone knew. In the middle of his set, he souly performed tracks from the new album as an insight into what is to come. Having a slightly different set up within his band, he was as good as ever live, which was obvious when he left the stage and the crowd were left wanting more, he came back out and smashed out his old songs. We look forward to hearing his new album in October when it’s released.

Paul Meyer

Builder turned photographer, Paul Meyer tells us about his love for photography and how he has now turned a passion into his full time job.

As long as I can remember I have always had a Camera available to me. Even from my earliest memories, Photog-raphy has been a huge part of my life. To be able to share my life experiance with others on a professional level is quite simply amazing. Now that I have a professional studio near Tunbridge wells (Kent) I have been able, to not only develop my skills, but also teach other and help them develop theirs. I turned professional in 2010 and I now have a large client base that hire my studio ‘Photoshoot Studio Hire’ and who also hire me to produce their images.

Since Paul turned professional and has had his own studio, he has done a number of different genres, from product shots for companies like Sparrow & Finch to putting on a charity event for Red Nose Day. Along the way he has met some great mdoels, photographers and make up artists that regularly visit his studio, or shoot with Paul.

Jessica De Mattos

Jessica de Mattos is a freelance photog-rapher and retoucher specialising in com-mercial beauty and portraiture.

My interest in the subject was sparked at a very young age and at seventeen, I taught myself through practice and start-ed taking on clients and building a port-folio. I began by working with friends and family and built up to working with hair salons, generating promotional images for companies and creating portfolios of headshots and portraits for singers, ac-tors and for personal clients as well.

I studied for a year at London College of Fashion, (at which point I was determined to be a high end fashion photographer) then went on to study Photography for Fashion and Advertising at University of Wales, Newport, from which I graduated in 2011. Whilst there, I was able to refine my interests and discover what I was real-ly interested in photographing. After com-pleting my degree, I took a two year break from photography in order to rediscover my love for the subject and to get away from the academic side of things. I began photographing again at the end of 2012,

and have no plans to stop any time soon! My current plans are to rebuild my pho-tography business and begin taking on clients again, as well as revamping my portfolio!I find that my inspirations are drawn from everywhere, but are particularly triggered by fantasy and illusion - not just in photog-raphy but also from art, film, music and nature. Some of the photographers that I find inspire me most include Tim Walker, Zhang Jingna and the collaborative work between Rankin and the incredible make up artist, Alex Bo I also find inspiration in

shape, structure, shadow and silhouette. The use of make up to create a striking image has always fascinated me and has been something I’ve wanted to pursue and experiment with for as long as I can remember. Working with many fantastic make up artists has been a huge plus for my work and has enabled me to do just that, I couldn’t do it without them! I’m cur-rently working with an amazing make up artist called Emily-Rose (http://www.emi-lyrosemakeupartist.co.uk) on her second book, which will be published in December.

Darkslide Photography

Page 11: Phushion magazine issue 3 autumn 2013

Darkslide Photography is run by Award winning, Midlands Pho-tographer Andy Simon. Professionally trained with a City and Guild Diploma in photography, Andy has been practicing his art for the past 5 years. Specialising in Alternative and high fashion photography he mostly works with a large team of fashion de-signers, stylists, Makeup artists and bespoke jewellers as well as new and established models creating conceptual productions often telling stories with his work.

This set is entitled ‘The Dark Carnival’ The forgotten souls of a once vibrant community now haunt the forest, their clothes tat-tered, their spirits almost vacant, Their routines so ingrained in their memories they still perform, subconsciously to an audience of trees. The big top tents taken down, rotted, decayed and lost to the mists of time….

We love this set of carnival images from Andy Simon, every el-ement makes them a masterpiece. The lighting creates eerie yet fascinating images, you are immediately drawn to the char-acters, with their tattered clothing and weary expressions. The location of the shoot serves to intensify this feeling, it’s a vast wooded area where anything could be lurking just around the corner.

Liberty Harris

My name is Liberty Harris and I have had a passion for photography from a very young age. I find trying to get that perfect photograph that captures the es-sence of the moment is a delight and a challenge. I remember feeling this first when I was in my teens, photographing some of my favourite bands. When photographing I want to depict both emotion and the subjects character.

I have recently just finished a degree in Digital Pho-tography at Ravensbourne College. During the course I have experienced a number of different genres, from landscapes to fashion. I feel doing new and different shoots enables you to learn a lot more, as well as work with different people. This can cre-ate a great synergy, which in turn creates fresh and better ideas.

With a degree in Photography it is clear that Liberty has found her style and has a talent for portraiture. For more images from Liberty check her out on Fa-cebook;

Richard Edwards

No matter how long I’ve been doing photography for I think I’ll always feel like I’ve only just started. I used to take a Polaroid camera to school with me sometimes, that was amazing. This is of course before the days of digital, photography really was magical to me, a mo-ment immortalised, captured forever. It really was a part time hobby as was art but defi-nitely something I enjoyed. I took art for my GCSE and photography for A level, dropping out half-way through to work in pest control, as a labourer, casual work doing unskilled manual labour for an agency, painting and decorating, at the cinema...it didn’t feel like I was where I wanted to be so I went back to college in Tonbridge and spent a year doing a foundation diploma in art and design and then on for a further three years for a degree in photogra-phy. It was amazing for me, the opportunity to talk to people with years of experience, to bounce ideas around a room full of interested people regularly with the support and honest constructive criticism needed.I was a bit of a wild child in an academic environment, my curiosity never allowed me to work in straight lines and because of that I believe I got more out of my education in practi-cal terms than most of my peers, I cant just tick the boxes, I have to analyse the question, explore it from every conceivable angle, experiment with theoretical concepts and then with practical applications to find my own solution, I would spend a long time and a lot of money trying to fully understand and then interpret my ideas in a visual way.

Page 17: Phushion magazine issue 3 autumn 2013

17

All in all over the years I’ve tried almost every genre of photography and its always been the more creative shots that have fulfilled me the most, not necessarily complicated, high budget shoots but ones with multiple layers, hair, make-up, clothing, accessories, lighting, location, pose, the correct components for the shot to work for it’s intended purpose...a story.I’ve photographed a number of hair styling shoots with clear briefs as well as loose briefs open to creative interpretation, coming up with a dialogue for models to ‘act’ out a character not dissimilar to moving images in films and finding that sweet spot, the moment when you can see and feel the desired atmosphere in a still shot.I’ve been photographing Burlesque for over a year now and it is by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever done, every show...every act even, has its own different lights, it’s dark, they’re constantly moving but it’s fun. The performers put so much effort into their acts in their choreography, their hand made or personalised costumes, their hair, make-up and styling and creating an identity through expression, which is true art in my eyes, capturing it photographically is a technical challenge but I believe if you can do that, you probably have a good chance of being to photograph just about anything. Going from having very little control over the lighting to having full control in the studio allows real insight over time, being able to carefully work out how you want your ideas to look rather than having the pressure of capturing a fleeting moment. I would never claim to know it all, it still feels like magic to me.

In September 2012 she travelled to a top secret recording session, in Barcelona which she will be revealing more about in 2013. Alice was also booked to support Jessie J at Ponty’s Big Weekend, in Wales, but the gig was unfortunately cancelled as Jessie fell ill. 2013 has been a big year so far, with Alice currently writing and recording her debut EP. For this she has been working with a number of different co-writers and producers, some of these included; Dion Wardle, AYO Beatz, Charlie Morton and many more. Dorey The Wise

Originally an acoustic duo, Dorey the Wise was formed in 2010 by Aidan Tig-well and Chris Georghiou. Brought together by a love of music and food, the Hastings based pair set out to create songs that would woo ladies and melt hearts of stone. They failed on both accounts. But they did convince people they were charming and handsome with their cheeky banter and a collection of well-crafted songs. After a few months they came away with first prize at a local talent show, winning £200 and Aidan’s height (6ft 3in) in pizza. In 2011 the band doubled in size like dough in a warm oven with the addition of a rhythm section, Ma-son Holmes and Elliot Lampitt, who respectively added bass and beats to the acoustic foundations and gave the songs more dynamics, scope and energy. Throughout 2012 the band consolidated a growing fan base by adding to their repertoire and gigging at a number of venues in London and Hastings, plus local festivals in the South East. They also made it to second place (out of a field of 10,000 hopefuls) in the Surface Festival, an international showcase event promoting new music, which gave them the chance to play at Indigo O2 and the O2 Academy in Islington. The band released their debut EP on 1 March 2013 which has already picked up radio play on BBC, Amazing Radio and grabbed the attention on BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson. The EP is available to download from amazon, iTunes and Spotify. You can also buy a limited edition CD from their website www.doreythewise.comhttps://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/dorey-the-wise-ep/id599237204

Review by Erin Edward.Hailing from Hastings, Dorey the Wise are a four piece worthy of your atten-tion. Upon my first listen I was initially impressed by the cheery, summery vibes thinking I would write about sunny mornings and festivals. However, my second listen unearthed the multi-layered quirks of this interesting little E.P. Teaming cleverly self-deprecating lyrics, with the up-beat riffs, their debut bril-liantly accomplishes unification of the cheerful and the morose. It leaves you in a good mood, but also wanting to go out and apologise for all of those times you have acted like a dick.

With a vocal that could have been borrowed from the lead singer of The Futureheads, E.P opener Backbone is reminiscent of the indie pop rock bands of the late nineties/early noughties (it’s been over ten years, it’s due a revival!). However, Dorey’s (hope they don’t mind if I call them Dorey, it’s cute) sound is fresh. The subtly intricate guitars of ‘True True’ simultane-ously manage to evoke false memories of sunny car journeys with the roof down and the volume up, and real memories of pre-gig excitement, (I would be excited to see these boys). The verses have an eighties undertone, think ‘The Smiths’ if they’d been on Prozac, and the chorus is impressively, if an-noyingly catchy. Over all, Dorey The Wise have a clear direction, their song writing is excel-lent, their lyrics are honest and relatable, you want to listen again. And listen again I shall, and I recommend you do too. With air play on the BBC, and an impressive back catalogue of gig venues, I’d get down to see this band be-fore they’re big. The E.P is out on the first of March, buy it, listen to it, enjoy! ERIN EDWARD.

State Of Play

Fresh from their recent UK tour and with notable names such as BBC London DJ, Gary Crowley, championing their cause, State of Play are set to unleash their new single, Children of the Sun.Recorded in collaboration with producer James Routh of Sonic Boom Six, the track is an explosive summertime anthem, combining an insanely in-fectious melody with relentless beats to create a call to arms that stands up and demands to be moved to. True to the band’s nature, by the end of the three and half minute joy ride, the boundaries between genres are left thoroughly blurred…‘Intelligent, entertaining and original – State of Play, are targeting the charts and minds of the nation…’ BBC 1Xtra DJ, Crissy Criss

With a shared mentality that belies the member’s varied backgrounds, State of Play map a vast musical territory, spanning from neo-soul, hip-hop and indie-rock to the fringes of EDM. Their sound, though impossible to pigeonhole, is utterly distinctive; the unique culmination of their myriad influences.

Page 31: Phushion magazine issue 3 autumn 2013

31

The group boasts a trio of vocalists, including the East London raised MC and wordsmith, Anthony (A-Mens) Mensah, the Edinburgh native Mellissa (Missy) McAnulty and Ahmar (S.V.) Ferguson, who brings the influences of his Jamaican Heritage to the table. This front-trio are backed by Alex (Fando) Fernandes, Will Kerr, Ben Spooner and Anthony Kent, all of whom were drawn to London to pursue their musical ambitions.

With the line up finalised by mid 2012, following a summer of festival appearances, their debut EP Welcome to the State was released in No-vember of the same year. The single Sequel to a Bad Movie followed in April 2013, garnering a host of favourable reviews and winning air time on Amazing Radio amongst other stations. A UK tour conducted in the same month cemented the groups reputation for unforgettably engaging live shows and widened their fan-base further.

Forerunner

We started playing music together about four or five years ago, although at that time we weren’t playing under the name ‘Forerunner’. It just so happened that we all grew up in the same church in Brighton, when we were teenagers we were asked to play in the band at the youth meetings every Friday night. We literally played together every single week for a year or so, until one day in 2009 we decided that we should formally make ourselves a ‘band’ and that we should start gigging around Brighton and not just stay playing to the church youth. We wanted to play music to new people and experience new venues and new live atmospheres, hoping we could make an impression on people and on the music scene. So in a nutshell, that’s basically how and why we became Forerunner.

At that point we didn’t really have many of our own songs, but since then we’ve written and re-leased a couple of EPs (Hold Your Fire, Origins) which seem to have been received pretty well. Along with the EP releases we started to naturally perform further afield, playing in London and around the South East a fair amount. One of the most satisfying things is looking at our journey so far and seeing how much we’ve already improved from those early days. It seems like every aspect of the band is constantly being worked on and improved. Our song writing has definitely moved on from where it was in the first EP, and our live shows have become more energetic and more of a visual experience.

Page 33: Phushion magazine issue 3 autumn 2013

Individually we’ve all spent time working on our own instruments and improving our skills too. The EP we released earlier this year (Origins) is the most obvious example of this improve-ment. Maybe its because we had a brilliant producer on board, maybe its because we’ve all grown up a bit from those early days or maybe its because the shows we performed as part of the release weekend were probably up there with the best we’ve ever played live. Its also been great to hear and read some incredible compliments and encouragements from some big players in the music industry, we’re truly grateful for that, but we’re also under no impressions that we’re perfect yet, we seem to have adopted an attitude that is open to listening to criticism and feedback, and really going to work on making those areas of the band better.

Looking forwards, we’re hoping to continue writing songs, continue performing live and con-tinue making an impact on people. We’re currently booking dates for the Autumn, and we might put on more of our own nights rather than only using existing promoter nights. We’re always on the look out for ways to get our music out to more people, so we will carry on doing that. We all absolutely love being in this band, its the best thing to be able to do what you love doing with the people you love being with. Hopefully we’ll be able to keep growing the fan base and continue doing Forerunner long into the future!

IkueIkue is a 21 year old rapper and produc-er from Gravesend in Kent. His name is pronounced I.Q. and has been writing mu-sic since the age of 10. It started when he was in school, a few years above him there was a rapper called Kizmusic that he looked up to and Ikue used to watch him in the studio for hours. Eventually he plucked up the courage to rap in front of him and hasn’t turned back from that day.

He is currently working on his brand new CD titled ‘Piff and Chips’ which at the mo-ment does not have a release date. This new CD follows on from his previous re-lease ‘The Green Man’ which is available on his YouTube account. His new project will have some tracks produced by D-Lux as well as himself. Promising to contain more of his witty lyrics you can be sure to hear some jokes in his new release.

Ikue has always said he wants to re-lease a professional studio album and work with varying different artists from as many different genres as possible, this could then lead into him creating an acoustic EP with collaborations. One person Ikue would like to collorate with is

Cherri Pi

Cherri-Pi is has been following her passion for alternative modeling for 3 years. What many people don’t realise when looking through her portfolio is that she in fact has a disability that affects her legs, meaning she relies on us-ing a wheelchair.

She began modelling to show others that people who are affected by a disability are beautiful and that being differ-ent is something to embrace, not something that holds you back. Cherri hopes that her works gives others the confidence to follow their dreams as well. Through her Facebook page she encourages anyone who has a similar disability or wants to pursue their career in the way that she has to contact her for advice and support.

Here at Phushion we were really moved by Cherri’s pas-sion. Her images are inspiring and we hope she succeeds in her admissions.

My names Chloe-Anne, I have been modelling since April 2013 and started to help boost my confidence. I am 5 ft 6 inches and enjoy a wide range of genres. I have shot fashion, beauty and linge rie, all of which have been fantastic. I’m al-ways looking for new and exciting projects to work on and continuously strive to capture a unique style.

Although Chloe-Anne is relatively new to the modelling scene, she has started to create a interesting portfolio. Some of the most inter-esting is her silhouette work she with James Eldridge. She has also shot for some fun super hero style images with David Watkins. Chloe has used a lot of different photographers but has always brought her own personal style to the images. We look forward to seeing what is to come in the future for her. If you like Chloe’s style or want to know more about her and what she shoots, get in contact with her through her Facebook page ;

My name is Sophie (aka “SophaLottie”) and I’m a part time model from Tenterden, Kent. I am twenty years old and have been modelling for about a year and a half. I am considered a creative person as I have been in-volved in Art and Design since a young age at school. I never thought I would enter the world of modelling, I was naïve and thought the only way you could become a model was if you were 5ft 8” and a size 8, how wrong was I! I fell into modelling after meeting a young freelance photographer at my local pub, he suggested I have a photo shoot with him after showing me his portfolio. I was a little nervous at first but nevertheless we did a fashion shoot on location at a local wood-land. As it urns out I really enjoy it! The next thing I know I was signing up to various portfolio hosting sites searching for other photographers to work with me. I must have done something right because since then I have had dozens of shoots with photographers in and around Kent, Lon-don and have even toured parts of Dorset. One of my favourite projects so far in my modelling career was with Baden Bowen based in Dover, we collaborated on a “Surrealism” shoot and the results proved very popular with fellow photographers and mod-els. It was exciting to be a part of a project that was different and techni-cally challenging. I have also been a part of various projects with Maid-stone photographer - Stu Buckland (aka Starglider Photography). Most recently we worked on a futuristic body tape set. The application of the tape took a while but it was very much worth it! My next major project shall be with local photographer and friend Livvy Hukins who has organised a bridal shoot complete with a groom, hair-dresser/make up artist, wedding dress maker, florist and tiara design-er. I have wanted to model as a bride since the start so I am very much looking forward to it. Watch this space! www.facebook.com/sophalottie
