Starting from the break of dawn on April 13th, Thais residing in all parts of the country would rise early to make merit which is believed to bring good fortune for the New Year. This could be in the form of offering alms to monks, freeing caged birds, freeing fishes into the rivers, respectfully pouring water on the monks, Buddha statues, and the elderly and making merit for the ancestors.

After having accomplished good deeds, it’s time for some fun. The highlight of the entire festival is pouring/ splashing water at each other. In the modern day, however, water-pouring has inevitably evolved into good-spirited water-fights. Everyone gets to splash water at everyone else without anybody getting mad.

The temple is located on a moun-tainous terrain filled with caves and grottos like ‘Tham Yai’ (Big Cave), ‘Tham Mued’ (Dark Cave) and ‘Tham Jaeng’ (Bright Cave). Tham Yai, located at the foothills, is the largest and has an impressive entrance with herds of friendly monkeys roaming the grounds.

‘Tham Phra’ , another name of Tham Yai which means ‘Cave of Buddha’, is 20 meters wide and 40 meters long. It has a flat floor and arched ceiling shaped like a boat bottom. Inside, you will find a replica of Buddha’s foot print and a series of beautiful Buddha statues.

Most attractive of the statues is the ‘Phra Buddha Saiyaht’ or the reclining Buddha measuring over 14 meters long. This highly-revered statue has been a symbol of piety and strength for the people of Phang-Nga for a long, long time. This is evident by the steady stream of people coming in to pay their respects each day.

In the vicinity of the ‘Big Cave’, there are two additional caverns called ‘Tham Ngu’ (Snake Cave) and ‘Tham Nong Nong’ where visitors could hit the rocks inside to produce a different variety of sounds.

After having paid our respects to Buddha’s footprint in Tham Yai, we proceeded up some flights of steps to Tham Jaeng located just 8 meters away. Unlike most caves which are dark and damp, this one is well-ven-tilated with fresh air and illuminated by sunlight coming through the large cavity in the ceiling.

Before the museum’s main building was converted into what it is today, it was formerly a Chinese Language School funded by a group of rich local men some 80 years ago. On the ground floor, visitors could learn about Phuket’s fascinating past as the different chapters are separated into individual sections. Starting with stories of some of the first immigrants who hopped aboard trading

In their new home, Phuket, their community grew, flourished and prospered. Their tradition has been passed on to their children and their successors who have kept the way of life until the present day. At first glance, the whitish/ light green round dumplings laid neatly on the trays appeared to be ‘Bualoys’ ready to be thrown into boiling coconut milk. But after taking a closer look, they were actually Kanom Hua Lan or what the Phuketians call ‘Ta Pa Goy’.

Although its name is simple, its taste is quite extraordinary. The dumplings are one of a kind with just the right combi-nation of sweet taste, creamy texture and nice aroma.

If you wish to try making it at home, Auntie Oui, our gener-ous chef was kind enough to reveal her recipe. The whole process is not at all complicated. Just mix the batter for wrapping, add the pre-mixed stuffing, roll into little balls and steam.

If you have a chance, will you come to Phuket again ?Yes, and do you know that my boss will be attending an internation-al conference in Phuket at the end of this month. He ‘s never been in Phuket before. After returning to Manila, I will promote Phuket to him before his travelling.
